Religious freedom is under assault today as never before. A country founded on freedom of speech and religious belief is being changed from within by activists hostile to both. Is this what we want America to be?

Religious freedom is a fundamental right, enshrined in the First Amendment. In It’s Dangerous to Believe, author and critic Mary Eberstadt documents how those who adhere to traditional religious beliefs—especially Christians—face widespread discrimination in today’s increasingly secular society.

For holding “wrong” opinions on flashpoint issues like birth control, abortion, and same-sex marriage, people of faith are being publicly attacked and demonized by aggressive anti-religious activists in an effort to drive them out of public life and cripple their institutions. Examples from across the country and elsewhere of self-appointed adversaries undermining believers in the workplace, intervening in faith-based charity efforts, and interfering in religious education reveal nothing less than a targeted assault on faith itself. Eberstadt writes to call attention to this underreported campaign and argues that it is a classic moral panic reminiscent of the Salem witch trials and the McCarthyism Red Scare of the 1950s.

About the Author

Mary Eberstadt is an�essayist, novelist, and author of several influential works of non-fiction, including�How the West Really Lost God: A New Theory of Secularization; Adam and Eve after the Pill: Paradoxes of the Sexual Revolution;�and�Home-Alone America. Her novel�The Loser Letters: A Comic Tale of Life, Death, and Atheism, has been adapted for stage and will premiere in fall 2016. She is also editor of the anthology�Why I Turned Right: Leading Baby Boom Conservatives Chronicle Their Political Journeys.�

A frequent contributor to magazines and journals including TIME, the�Wall Street Journal,�National Review, the�Weekly Standard, and�First Things, Mrs. Eberstadt (nee Tedeschi) has also served as an editor at�The Public Interest,�The National Interest, and�Policy Review. She has been associated with various think tanks, including most recently the Hoover Institution and the Ethics and Public Policy Center. In 2011, she founded a literary organization called the Kirkpatrick Society that has mentored hundreds of writers.

A Clear, Compelling Case for Civility and Religious Freedom

Clear, concise, compelling. Eberstadt makes more than just a case for civility in discussions of religious freedom—she convincingly argues that the conflict is not about religion vs. secularism, but vs. the sexual revolution. She cites many examples of individuals being hounded out of public and community life not for what they do, but simply for what beliefs they hold: somehow, merely holding an unpopular opinion is now tantamount to hate crimes. She shows, over and over, how the same people shouting about freedom are using increasingly McCarthyite tactics in persecuting believers. And she nails it by pointing out how strange this vicious, outsize response truly is, considering that those with traditional religious beliefs have been on the losing end of the culture wars for decades: "It’s also clear that during the past half century—in societies across the Western world, and on issues ranging from school prayer and public religiosity to women in combat and same-sex marriage—the faithful have mostly lost battle after battle. Why, then, are they still being attacked so vehemently? What, exactly, might be threatened by their insistence on “clinging” to their outmoded beliefs and superstitions?"

She goes on to make this case: "Contrary to secular liberalism a generation ago, which tended to view religious belief as an anthropological artifact, progressivism today does not regard the traditional Judeo-Christian moral code as simply pass�. Thanks to evolving doctrine about the sexual revolution, that code is seen instead as the equivalent of evil." And that's what's most discouraging about this phenomenon. Aggressive efforts to push religious voices out of the national conversation by rebranding newly-impermissible opinions on issues like same-sex marriage as "bigoted" and "hate speech" goes against the entire idea of progressivism and tolerance and diversity, which secular progressives claim to prize above all else. That they cannot engage openly and honestly without name-calling is telling—and distressing. As Eberstadt puts it: "Above all, there is no mercy in slandering millions of men and women—citizens, colleagues, acquaintances, schoolmates, neighbors, and fellow members of the human family—by saying that people of religious faith “hate” certain people where they do not; or that they are “phobes” of one stripe or another, when they are not."

Finally: "The promiscuous hurling of the terms hater and -phobe is one example. These have become words used to smear, shame, and silence, not elucidate or clarify. Like a Trojan horse, they express the idea that there can be no rational or principled basis for opposing any particulars of the political agenda set forth by people who deploy those terms; all such opposition, their use implies, can only come from prejudice and fear. Words used to bar other people from a place at the human table are words that are worth thinking twice about."

As are all the words contained in this gem of a book. I plan to go back and read her earlier work on the strength of this excellent, elegant, and compassionate argument for the complicated beauty and necessity of this first of all freedoms.

Mary Eberstadt gathers much information here on serious affronts to Christians--especially those whose work is now "counter-cultural"--as they seek to live their faith in the world. She thoroughly documents through ample citations the examples she uses. The first five chapters of her book "It's Dangerous to Believe," focus on the length to which some people have gone (OK, liberals and progressives mainly) to make life difficult for Christians who promote traditional sexual morality, and the dignity of human life. She writes of challenges to the work of Catholic Charities when they attempt to function according to Catholic moral and social teaching, to Christian schools because they are Christian, to home schooling because of the fear that parents will "indoctrinate" their children in hateful Christian teaching. The commonality in all this is that when they are faithful to Christian teaching on sexual ethics, the dignity of human life from conception to natural death, and the sanctity of marriage between a man and a woman, Christians are considered by some to be bigots and a danger to young people and society.

Granted, these examples are not of Christians, at least in the United States, suffering personal violence and death as they increasingly do in Europe, the Middle East and other parts of the world, but they are affronts to religious liberty nonetheless. And for those who have suffered these attacks, they are very real.

An additional important contribution of the book is found in Chapter 6, "What is to Be Done; or, How to End a Witch Hunt." Here Eberstadt calls for a return to basic civility, of people respecting others and their beliefs and allowing these beliefs to be tested in the marketplace of ideas. When we make people we disagree with our enemies, we prevent open discussion and a common movement toward truth.

The book is short--126 pages--and the ample examples Eberstadt uses makes for interesting reading. I found the book eye-opening and engaging and thoroughly enjoyed reading it.

Eberstadt is an excellent writer with an engaging style. She describes the problem of the treatment of Christians in America in a calm manner with many anecdotes documenting anti-Christian bias.

She reviews movements in the past that focused on oppressing various groups, and explores how they played out. Her suggestions for fighting the oppressing of Christians is reasoned, thoughtful and focused on ideas that might work. The Book is well worth reading.

Good Philosophical Book

I bought this book because all I knew how to play was a sweeper/stopper formation. After reading this book I had a much better understanding of the 433 and what the formation is designed for. This book did not offer any drills that would be helpful to running a 433, just the tactical and philosophical ideas for the formation. If you need drills for players, I recommend Dutch Soccer Drills and Dutch Soccer Drills Volume II. Volume 1 is for individual drills and Volume 2 is for team drills.

Excellent book. Clearly describes the role of each player in the 4-3-3 formation, provides some example build-up plays and also provides exercises to help the players get familiarized with the formation and their roles. Has plenty of diagrams to properly explain what is said in words.

What I like most about this book is it gives you great detail and leaves out the fluff. I switched to a 4-3-3 this season and while I already had a good grasp in the formation the book proved to be a great resource.

A Meditative Walk on Water

McFarlane's Silt is a lyrical essay on the Broomway,the public pathway across the Somerset levels. To read it is to walk at his side along this mystical path; to be at once fascinated by the experience of walking on water, and terrified by the danger of being overtaken by the incoming tide. A book for the mindful walker, a walking meditation. David Quentin's photographs are disappointing when viewed on Kindle, and this reviewer felt his Afterword, written in a more academic style, while interesting on points of law, added very little to the enjoyment of Silt. Perhaps it should be published separately.

However, in The Monk and the Riddle, Silicon Valley sage Randy Komisar reasons that's only half the equation for success. And it may not be the important half. Introducing a human element to Silicon Valley the world of VC's

I'm a University of Baltimore student enrolled in the Entrepreneurship Fellows program and this was the recommended reading for my ENTR-320 class. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and highly recommend it, but find it a bit difficult to summarize because of the unique way it is written. This is not your typical non-fiction entrepreneurship literature. Rather, it is a story that follows the development of a start-up's business plan, one that Komisar is reviewing for Frank, his venture capitalist friend. Throughout the story, Komisar transitions seamlessly back and forth from the present to his past, reflecting on his own personal experiences through the duration of his career. From graduating from Harvard to his time at Apple, each story touches on unique nuances of start-ups and business relationships. While the book passively sheds light on the process of venture capitalist funding as well as the organization of start-ups, the greatest wisdom I gained was from analyzing Komisar's character. The advice he gives throughout the story is honest and intimate, asserting that Silicon Valley and the world of VC's can have an impact on much more than the bottom line of businesses. The moral of the story is simple; it is about the journey, not the destination. You must read for yourself to discover why the book is titled "The Monk and the Riddle".

My take on "The Monk and the Riddle"

I am currently a University of Baltimore student enrolled in the survey in the Entrepreneurship course and this is my recommended reading. Randy Komisar focuses not solely on the monetary success of business, but trying to make a difference through business. He emphasizes being creative and being true to yourself in all business ventures. On page 55, he compares business to painting and sculpting. He goes on to explain that business is about personal expression and coping with change in society. I never looked at business as a creative outlet before. Komisar really made me consider what it means to grow as a person through a business, not just financial growth. It makes sense to follow his ideas because if you are getting more than just financial benefits out of your business, you will want to put in more effort, time, and thought into it, resulting in more success and personal gratification. I really liked how Komisar has this unorthodox way of thinking about business. I do however think it maybe little naive to not rely so heavily on numbers but on personal expression and gratification. Most business owners want to see numbers increasing in their bank accounts and employees want to see raises. It may be difficult to bring over old school business owners and entrepreneurs to this way of thinking. Unfortunately, for many in today’s business world, money and profits are the bottom line. I do think that younger generations of entrepreneurs could learn a lot from Komisar and this book.

But there is a retrospect to this situation as most entrepreneurs only have half of what is necessary to start a business the proper and successful way. As Randy Komisar explains that he has worked with some of the top companies within today’s market such as Apple, LucasArts Entertainment, WebTv, and TiVo. Komisar is a part of a new breed of executives who have been called virtual CEO’s but their job is different from those of a consultant. Where their job is to advise but instead they also work for these internet “startup” companies or small high tech companies. With the help from writer Kent Lineback; Komisar is able to fuse the story of his own and other entrepreneurs to ultimately show how business deals and ventures in Silicon Valley are started. I liked the charisma that Komisar instilled within all his stories suggesting that ones’ passion and vision are just as important as a well-crafted business plan. This book and notion that Randy Komisar has can easily help other entrepreneurs as it can point those looking to start a business in the right direction instead of having them wonder. The author criticized business plans based on passion, motive, opportunity, and its functionality in real world aspects but I disliked that if your idea wasn’t big enough, it simply wouldn’t work.

Healing is possible read this book!

As an abortion survivor who was steered down the wrong path by age old clinicians this book was a Godsend and helped me begin my healing process. The author weaves his story to share what heaven is like for those we've lost, in this case our lost children through abortion, how they have nothing but pure love for us as they await our time to join them in heaven. Isn't it in the bible where it says, suffer the little children who come into me for this is the kingdom of heaven. Here you get a glimpse of what it might be like as Frank Peretti masterfully takes you on this precious journey of live and forgiveness.

Read this book several years ago after hearing the radio drama on Focus On The Family back then. Lost the book. Was pleased to find it again! Is a very heart-warming and touching book. Especially for many people out there who will relate and be reassured by this little book.

Great Book on All Aspects of Led Zeppelin

This is perhaps the best book that explains Led Zeppelin completely: their music, their manager, their tours, their behavior, and the reasons why they did things the way they did them. Mr. Hoskyns put this book together by collecting statements from many people associated with Led Zeppelin, including the band, its employees, its groupies, other rock musicians, and arranging them in chronological order. I started reading while skeptical about the format, but I saw the quality of this "oral history" format the more I read.

Led Zeppelin - When dinosaurs ruled the earth.

Led Zeppelin bestrode the 70s rock world like a colossus and perhaps it is right that any book about them should have equally epic proportions. This latest "reveal" by Barney Hoskyns sometimes borders on the obsessional yet for Zeppelin aficionados it is a hugely welcome addition to the bands colorful history from a first class rock journalist who has previously taken on such luminaries as The Band and Tom Waits. In another setting he also charts the rise of fall of the cocaine cowboys of Laurel Canyon scene in "Hotel California". His new book "Trampled Under Foot: The Power and Excess of Led Zeppelin" does revisit some of the themes of the latter book since it is the city of Los Angeles which casts a huge shadow over proceedings as the "default" base for Plant, Page, Jones and Bonham during their all conquering American Tours. This witnessed them take residency in the legendary "Riot House" (Continental Hyatt House) on Sunset Strip where they occupied the top floor of the hotel and created a modern day bacchanalia. Their infamous and lurid excesses has formed the basis for previous books not least Stephen Davis "Hammer of the Gods" a tale of a band "drenched in sex, drugs and psychic abuse". In truth Davis relied much on the wild and often-unreliable recollections of tour manager Richard Cole whose later "Stairway to Heaven" repeated much of what had already been published. Clearly while Cole was an untrustworthy witness he was at the heart of the Zeppelin juggernaut particularly with his friendship to the brilliant but often brutish Jon Bonham. Hence the protestations of Jimmy Page and other band members about his "ridiculously false" account may fall into the "me thinks they doth protest to much" category. Whatever the case it evident that the more mature ex Led Zep members have been keen to put considerable distance between their former hellraiser exploits and current status as Grammy winning wizened old bluesmen.

Hoskyns book draws on a much wider evidential base and attempts to get to the heart of the matter by extensive interviews of over 200 people producing what is the definitive oral history of the band. Hoskyns stated purpose was to peel away the myths and legends. As he states most existing books "recycle tales of groupies and mudsharks and chucking TV sets out of windows. For me, this is terribly boring. I wanted to demystify the band". And yet the reality does not allow a complete revision for as he states "at the same time, I uncovered stuff that's even more shocking". These include the fact that the Zeppelin machine constructed by Peter Grant was so big and powerful that it was virtually above the the law" and could "pay our way out of any trouble, any scandal'. In the last analysis however is this a great shock to any Led Zeppelin fan? They came at a time when the a new and aggressive breed of British managers fought tooth and nail for their artists including through physical violence. They were an "albums" band in a pre internet/download area when record sales were stratospheric and money almost unlimited. They conquered the US at the time in terms of tours and album sales which the Beatles could only dream of. But most of all they were the most exciting thing on the planet in terms of rock music, despite the derision of nearly every rock critic at the time including Hoskyns house magazine the NME.

In the last analysis if you love Zeppelin you will adore "Trampled Underfoot". It is brilliantly written (if a tad long) and charts the story of a singularly unique band of brilliant young musicians with the world at their feet, woman on every arm and unassailable repertoire of hard rock and metallic funk. In short if you own "Physical Graffiti" buy it. For the curious Hoskyns does an interesting list of his top Zeppelin songs marked by the absence of the "usual suspects". Here is his top 15 (No Stairway!) -

Appropriate Title for an Awesome Book!

I've read everything I could get my hands on and this book was no exception. What surprised me at first was the way it was written. The book is made up of quotes and exerts from different people all throughout the Zeppelin World, and placed in chronological order. I wasn't a fan at first, but I quickly realized that each quote gave the perspective of that individual without being dramatized by an author. Instead of the book being persuasive and opinionated from one view, it offers several different views of events that occurred in the Zeppelin world.
I personally found this even more interesting. Instead of a "he said, she said", the quotes come from out of the horses mouths. I think it's great the band has had that mystique about them from tier inception and continues to gain new generations of fans. This book was a great read for the fans who want to get a little deeper into their world. Quotes come from groupies, engineers, managers, record label executives, other musicians as well as the band themselves. I found the book fascinating, but at the same time didn't really learn anything new. It re-emphasizes the fact that John Bonham was really respected throughout the music community, but equally feared for his hard-partying ways and how Jimmy Page was the mastermind behind the helm. John Paul Jones was the most underated musician basically building the groove behind Page, while Robert Plant brought that Black Country Middle-Earthness to the band. Led Zeppelin Rules! What a great time for this book to come out a month before the O2 reunion release on Blu-ray!

Her research interests are in the effective design and delivery of health promotion and health communication, and she has published numerous studies within this area. She has also published two textbooks in the area of health communication titled Health Communication: Strategies for Health Promotion and Working on Health Communication.
