Easily earned money ...
By Dick Mandemaker
This book is a big disappointment; I am actively working in the PDM/PLM market for over 15 years and I have given many training and educational workshops; I was leading the ESPRIT RapidPDM project. Even though I reviewed the book from an educational perspective, to my opinion the book is nothing more as a summary of topics; the authors have not succeeded in getting their 'thing' and experience transferred to the pages. There are better books and even better articles around (e.g. Gartner, Cimdata, Forrester, John Stark to name a few).

So why 2 stars you might ask: well that's because the authors have included metrics and that's an important fact!

An excellent approach that exposes the reader to the PLM world
By Sharjith Naramparambath
I liked the way the author has laid out the chapters, each covering the different components of PLM. This book is definitely a good starting material for newbies into PLM. But I expected more explanation for many of the topics. The content of most topics seem to be superficial.

Book Review 'Product Lifecycle Management'
By Satish Iyer
My search for books on PLM concepts and philosophy led to this particular book. Frankly, apart from this one there are only two other books on the subject. One by Michael Grieves and the other by John Stark. Over the last 8 years, I have worked on the implementation and maintenance of PLM solutions i.e. the customization of the commercially available PLM product. So I was looking for more of a textbook on PLM which would explain the details/nuances of key functionalities of any PLM product such as item/structure management, product portfolio management, change management & workflow, configuration management and document management. I wanted to understand what these mean, how these are typically used by various customers thru examples.
This book did explain those key functionalities viz. product structures, item/structure management and change management. But the book talks about PLM more from a strategic and management perspective. It clarified my understanding of the product process and order-delivery process. The challenges of product management in manufacturing and how PLM can help in meeting those challenges are explained very well by means of 3 case studies for different product types.
I saw the value of the book in the excellent overview of a typical product lifecycle model and how the product and product management strategy is closely linked to the business strategy. With a good product management strategy implemented in a PLM solution, management should be able to take business decisions about launching, introducing new variants, discontinuing products based on the data from the PLM solution.
I would say that this book is a must read for the senior management team viz. CEO, CIO, business unit owners, program and project managers, who are thinking about a PLM initiative in their company. It is essential for them to understand that a lot of home work has to be done by the organization itself to define a clear product management strategy, before they zero in on a commercial product and contract with a vendor to implement the PLM solution. Techies and novices to the world of PLM can read this to understand what PLM does and how it is used by the users in different organization verticals.

The first novel in the Iron Druid Chronicles—introducing a cool, new, funny urban fantasy hero

Atticus O’Sullivan, last of the Druids, lives peacefully in Arizona, running an occult bookshop and shape-shifting in his spare time to hunt with his Irish wolfhound. His neighbors and customers think that this handsome, tattooed Irish dude is about twenty-one years old—when in actuality, he’s twenty-one centuries old. Not to mention: He draws his power from the earth, possesses a sharp wit, and wields an even sharper magical sword known as Fragarach, the Answerer.

Unfortunately, a very angry Celtic god wants that sword, and he’s hounded Atticus for centuries. Now the determined deity has tracked him down, and Atticus will need all his power—plus the help of a seductive goddess of death, his vampire and werewolf team of attorneys, a bartender possessed by a Hindu witch, and some good old-fashioned luck of the Irish—to kick some Celtic arse and deliver himself from evil.

Don’t miss any of Kevin Hearne’s phenomenal Iron Druid Chronicles novels:

Review
"Hearne, a self-professed comic-book nerd, has turned his love of awesome dudes whacking mightily at evil villains into a superb urban fantasy debut. Staying alive for 2,000 years takes a great deal of cunning, and sexy super-druid Atticus O'Sullivan, currently holed up in the Arizona desert, has vexed a few VIPs along the way. High up on that list is Aenghus Óg, the Celtic god of love. It's not just that Aenghus wants his sword back—though it is a very nice magical sword—but that Atticus didn't exactly ask permission to take it. Atticus and his trusty sidekick, Irish wolfhound Oberon, make an eminently readable daring duo as they dodge Aenghus's minions and thwart his schemes with plenty of quips and zap-pow-bang fighting." --Publisher's Weekly, starred review

“A page-turning and often laugh-out-loud funny caper through a mix of the modern and the mythic.”—Ari Marmell, author of The Warlord’s Legacy

“Celtic mythology and an ancient Druid with modern attitude mix it up in the Arizona desert in this witty new fantasy series.”—Kelly Meding, author of Three Days to Dead

“Kevin Hearne breathes new life into old myths, creating a world both eerily familiar and startlingly original.”—Nicole Peeler, author of Tempest Rising

If James Bond were a Druid
By New in VT
I read Book 1 of the Iron Druid Chronicles a few weeks ago and am struggling to recall enough details of the plot to write even a brief recap. And perhaps that is all the recap you really need.

Atticus is a super hot druid (see cover) which is impressive as he is actually thousands of years old. He lives in Arizona selling tea and tarrow cards to old people and college students (respectively) while romping about the desert with his talking dog/banter buddy Oberon. Ages ago he managed to get his hands on the legendary sword Fragarach and now Aenghus Og, the powerful Celtic God and original owner, has decided he wants it back.

Atticus is the James Bond of Druids. He's powerful, routinely underestimated, has lots of nifty cool gadgets, and women frequently drop their panties for him. Although Atticus doesn't have much time for lady-fun because has his hands full battling the minions of Aenghus Og. Luckily for Atticus he is near-immortal due to an arrangement he made long ago with Morrigan, Celtic Chooser of the Slain, who has agreed to not come for him. So that's handy.

Seems like a decent setup for a fun romp. But too many things bothered me about Hounded:

1. It reads like watching a video game. Atticus battles increasingly challenging minions until finally facing the big bad. Also, like video games, Atticus regenerates life points quickly by sleeping next to mother earth.
2. The ability to regenerate quickly and being near-immortal frankly removes a lot of the tension from the battle sequences.
3. There are never any consequences to things Atticus does. The most obvious example was when Atticus beheads a baddie in full view of a mortal neighbor who basically shrugs it off because Atticus is a good guy and wouldn't have done so without a good reason.
4. Atticus has no personal or emotional journey. In fact he doesn't really seem to want for anything beyond being left alone to play with his dog and hang out in his shop. He's simply reacting to the stream of baddies that show up on his front door.
5. Is there such a thing as too much action? There is so much action going on that I started skimming. It wasn't like I was worried about how it was going to turn out (see point #1 & #2).
6. I think the dog (Oberon) is supposed to be funnier than he is. Yeah Oberon is continually asking for a harem of french poodles to frolic with. Eh...OK.

This is a hugely popular series that gets rave reviews on Amazon. It is definitely better than your average Urban Fantasy, filled with lots of action, a large cast of immortal characters, and snappy banter. If you're looking for fun, light, accessible fantasy, this definitely fits the bill. But it's also sort of forgettable. I considered buying the second book in the series but I suspect it's probably a lot like the first (if I'm missing out on greatness, please let me know). I figure I could save $8 by just putting this on the shelf and re-reading it in a year or so.

Urban fantasy isn't my thing. I love the Kate Daniels/Magic Bites series. But generally most of what I've read (Patricia Briggs, Jeaniene FrostKaren, Marie Moning) has left me cold. So maybe this book is better than I think it is, and it's simply just not my thing.

Great start to introduce a new series.
By Marty T
The adventures of Atticus and his Irish Wolfhound, Oberon are entertaining and fast paced reading. This is a good start to a new series about Atticus a several thousand year old Druid, and how he stays looking like a 23 year old college student. To try to avoid some bad guy God's, Atticus lives in Arizona, but is found and used as a pawn by several gods that have him in mortal danger several times in this book to achieve their ultimate goals, not caring about the end results for Atticus. Atticus isn't thrilled to find out just about every one of his old acquaintances has used him some way or another, but he holds to his word, and we meet several characters that I hope to see in future stories, be they werewolves, vampires or old Irish widows. Enjoyable fast read, once it gets going hard to stop until the end.

When modern day meets Celtic past
By Linda Romer
I really enjoyed reading Hounded. It was unlike anything I have ever read. It's full of humor and exciting adventure. This story is about a Druid named Atticus O'Sullivan who has been trying to stay alive for about 21 Centuries. The book contained Celtic Mythology while Atticus himself is as modern as the day. Great characters, Witches, Werewolves, Vampires, Gods and Demons.
Atticus and his sidekick Irish Wolfhound Oberon will keep you entertained in this Mythical, Modern Fantasy. I'm looking forward to reading the rest of this series.

I give Hounded 4 stars for it's funny Fantasy read.
I would recommend this book to Fantasy Fans.

Quiet for more than 135 years, the voices of Seneca Village are rising again. Angela Riddles ponders being free-but-not-free. The orphaned Donnelly brothers get gold fever. A conjurer sees past his era and into ours.

Drawing upon history and her exquisite imagination, Newbery Honor medalist, two-time Coretta Scott King Honor medalist, and National Book Award nomineee Marilyn Nelson recreates the long lost community of Seneca Village. A multi-racial, multi-ethnic neighborhood in the center of Manhattan, it thrived in the middle years of the 19th century. Families prayed in its churches, children learned in its school, babies were born, and loved ones were laid to rest. Then work crews arrived to build Central Park, and Seneca Village disappeared.

Illustrated in the poet’s own words — with brief prose descriptions of what she sees inside her poems — this collection takes readers back in time and deep into the mind’s eye of one of America’s most gifted writers. Gr 5 Up—This beautifully crafted and powerful collection of poems deals with a brief period (1825–57) in New York City's storied past. Seneca Village, on Manhattan's Upper West Side, was a thriving multiethnic community of African Americans, Irish and German immigrants, and, possibly, some Native Americans, until it was decimated by the creation of Central Park. After poring over the written accounts and census records, renowned poet Nelson sat down to imagine the lives of a number of the residents, giving voice to individuals based on the names and identifying labels. Brief paragraphs set each scene, followed by a poem in the voice of the Seneca Villager. Readers hear from a bootblack, a conjure-man, a reverend, a hairdresser, a nurse, a mariner, schoolchildren, a music teacher, tub-men hauling sewage to the river, an elderly conductor on the Underground Railroad, and abolitionist and activist Maria W. Stewart. As in any impoverished community, the hardships are palpable—babies die of misunderstood diseases, people are victimized by their starving neighbors, there's violence and cruelty—but there is also resilience, hard-won independence, and hope for its children's futures. In the spirit of Edgar Lee Masters's Spoon River Anthology, this work touches on historical truths (footnoted throughout) but introduces a fleeting time and place through the everyday hopes and dreams of its residents. VERDICT This rich and diverse (a variety of poetic forms, including ones invented for certain speakers, are featured) piece of American literature belongs in every collection.—Luann Toth, School Library Journal

A Village Reimagined through Poetry
By Donna
Marilyn Nelson, former CT Poet Laureate and winner of the Frost Medal for lifetime achievement in American poetry, has proven once again that she is able to enter another place, another era, and take us along. Seneca Village was a real place located in New York City in the 1800s. The immigrants who lived there—African American, Irish, German—were forced to move to make way for what is now Central Park. Nelson imagines their lives, dreams, successes, and setbacks. She employs a number of poetic forms in the telling of their stories. The "About the Poems" section in the back of the book is an informative look into her creative process and will interest not only those who write and study poetry, but poetry lovers in general.

As for the poems, each reader will have his or her favorites. One of mine was "Counting Blessings" about those who left Ireland during the Potato Famine in search of a new home where they could feed their children. At four lines, it's one of the shortest in the book, but it spoke to my heart as did the story behind it. "The Deaf Boy" is a testimony to music's transformative powers; it gave me chills. And "Make-Believe" rearranged something in my brain, causing me to think about racism in a new way. "Uncle Epiphany" was the perfect way to end the book. The last stanza—and in particular, the last three lines—left me with a feeling of quiet contentment. History is often less than glorious (as witnessed in many of these poems), but sometimes, sometimes, we human beings get something right at last.

Beautifully crafted poems introduce a little-known chapter in American history
By Janet Hamilton
Summary: From 1825 to 1857, Seneca Village in Manhattan was populated by newly-freed African American slaves and immigrants from Ireland and Germany. The people were poor and life was hard, but there was also celebration, hard work, and hope for the future. This collection of poems tells the story of those years through the people who lived there. Each facing page introduces the poem and creates a picture of the person at the moment it is spoken. Characters are referenced in others’ poems, or come back with their own several years later. The second to last poem, “The Law of Eminent Domain” quotes the law that ordered the eviction of Seneca Village residents so their land could be used to create Central Park. The author’s introduction gives the history of Seneca Village; she uses the last few pages to describe the different poetic forms she used. 87 pages; grades 5 and up.

Pros: These moving, beautifully crafted poems introduce a little-known chapter in American history. Footnotes give additional historical context. The final lines of the last poem bring the inhabitants of Seneca Village into the present: “I am one who knows that time and we are mist/hiding Light’s ever-changing panorama,/where the future holds a President Obama.”

Cons: The drab colors of the cover could make this less appealing for young readers to pick up and try.

Queen of American Letters, Marilyn Nelson
By chelofilm
Marilyn Nelson has done it again! My Seneca Village brings the community that was leveled to make way for Central Park back to life. I ordered this book so I could design lessons for my school's fifth graders. They are very much enjoying poems such as Land Owner, 15 cent Futures, and Conductor. These persona poems, which are deftly constructed using meter and rhyme, have captured the interest of my students and taught them what life was like for African Americans in the village. All of her poetry books that deal with African American history are superb and, in this age of endless standardized testing, have helped me to make lessons culturally relevant. Mrs. Nelson is such a gem of American Letters and we are so lucky to have her.

I didn't care for the characters. They weren't interesting. There were a lot of sex scenes, but they lacked emotional draw.
By Jane
REVIEWER'S OPINION:
I wasn't thrilled. I wasn't drawn to the characters. The story was ok but could have used more depth. There were many sex scenes which were ok, but I wasn't drawn in emotionally. There was one event which didn't make sense to me. Dominic and Nadia like and enjoy each other, but he decides to return her to her home. This causes Nadia to feel rejected. He ends up taking her back, but I found it unnecessary. It was an illogical source of conflict. The Jelena story was a little more interesting, but again I wasn't drawn into the characters enough to enjoy it.

A minor problem: the cover picture is wrong. Dominic has a disfigured face. Cover guy does not.

STORY BRIEF:
Dominic is disfigured with scars on his face and body. Alexis had something to do with causing them when he broke up with her a few years back. She wants him dead and has a contract out on his life. He lives in a remote fortress-like home. Mikhail steals Dominic's car and sells it. Dominic comes to Mikhail's home threatening violence. Mikhail's daughter Nadia offers herself to Dominic saying she will live with him and do anything he says. He is intrigued and takes her home. He requires that she always be naked. They have a lot of sex which includes bondage, spanking and sex toys.

A second story is about Nadia's sister Jelena. She married a wealthy older man Henry. He pays a monthly allowance to Jelena and also to her father. Jelena asks for more money to help Nadia which Henry refuses. Jelena knows Henry will probably divorce her for someone younger and leave her with no money. She takes steps to get money and power. She uses sex to make this happen. There are several Jelena sex scenes in the book which include 2 women, 2 men with 1 woman, and rear door activity.

DATA:
Story length: 243 pages. Swearing language: strong, including religious words. Sexual language: strong/erotic. Number of sex scenes: 16. Total number of sex scene pages: around 67. Setting: current day Nevada. Copyright: 2009. Genre: erotic romantic suspense.

"Beauty and the Beast" Modernly Retold
By Kindle Customer
Forgetting the fact that "Beauty and the Beast" told in the many different ways (culturally) has always been one of my favorite fairy tales, this book by Cathy Yardley is really good. Told with and in an excellent voice, composition, and new detailing, "Enslave" gives an erotically modern retelling of the story most of us have known since childhood. It isn't a story that is told with heavy emotions or incredible depth, but it does have a view that is by far spicy, sweet, charming, and interestingly nice in all the right ways.

Centered around three main characters this story begins similar to the old "Beauty and the Beast" in where the first main character, a Russian beauty, named Nadia Bessonova's father has stolen "the Rose" from the Beast. That "beast" being Dominic Luder who is an ex-criminal, killer, and mobster. It is because of that Dominic has come to brutally collect from the patriarch Bessonova, whose main course in life has been to steal, cheat, lie, and cast off his daughters through any means productive for him (such as marriage and sex). Bravely, Nadia makes the decision to go with Dominic so that she can buy her family sometime. While in captivity, she learns about satisfying lust and that Dominic is more than she expected. She learns that he is a trapped person who has created a prison as safety, and he learns through his regained lust and reopened vision how to trust and care for another again. However, as a new twist to the tale, the sister of Nadia, Jelena, comes to narrate the distressful and empowering attempt of helping her sister. With each narration you see every character grow and change (Nadia being the least to have to change) as their experiences happen to them.

In a nutshell, this book seriously won't let you down. However, that is all based upon the fact of your liking a "good" erotica and tale mixed together as one.

Surprisingly, very good
By Jude
~4/5
[Also available on my blog.]

I'm a little embarrassed to admit how much I liked this book. I try not to hold erotic or adult romance books on too high a level, mainly because I'm usually not very impressed with them. They usually have the characters jumping into things too quickly, or not very enticing characters, or not enough chemistry. They're not usually very amazingly written stories. But sometimes I get surprised, and this book surprised me.

Now, I'm not saying that this book was amazingly written, with great characters or any of that stuff. And I'm sure that there are going to be several people that look at this book, and that read this book, and do not like what happened. But, for some reason, I did.

I found this book by chance, and thought it sounded good. And it's a Beauty and the Beast retelling, which I didn't know until I'd already started it. Finding this out made me pay more attention to certain things, and yet still didn't make me dislike the book any more than I already did, which was not much at all.

Enslave's main character is Nadia, one of three sisters, whose father deals with crime. And when her father goes a bit too far and ends up in Dominic's debt, Nadia gives herself to Dominic so he won't kill her family. And so Nadia ends up as a slave to Dominic, while her sister Jelena is trying to find a way to get her back.

I was surprised by how much I enjoyed the relationship between Nadia and Dominic. I probably shouldn't, but I rather liked Dominic. He's rough around the edges, but he actually does care for Nadia, and I liked the ending. And I liked Nadia, as well. She wasn't too selfless, and she stood up to Dominic when it needed to be done. They had some problems with the whole, being-locked-up thing, but that worked itself out.

I was definitely surprised by what happened with Jelena. That was not a plot-line that I saw coming, and I didn't enjoy it as much as I'd have liked. She's really quite the bitch, and goes overboard even if she thinks what she's doing is right. I'm not going to say too much more on this, though, because that could be major spoilers.

I did not like Nadia and Jelena's father. He's, just, pathetic. And despicable. I didn't like him, and felt the sisters should have stuck up to him way before they did.

One problem that I did have with the story, is that I wasn't quite sure what time it was set in. Nadia's family is from Russia, and one of them was sold as a mail-order-bride, and where they live and how they live hints at an older time, but they have very new cars and cellphones... This very well could be set in modern times, but it felt like it should have been in the past.

Oh, also: sex. There is a lot of sex in this book. Not only between Nadia and Dominic, either. And there's some kinky stuff happening, and a threesome, and some lesbian stuff. There's sex in almost every chapter, too, but mixed in with actual plot movement.

And even with all the sex and Jelena, I read this book really fast. It was a while ago, but it was in less than two days, I know. I was surprised with how quickly the book went by, how easy it was to get through.

So, yea, I enjoyed this book quite a bit. And if I ever stumble upon another of Yardley's books, I will be getting it.

India under Colonial Rule: 1700-1885, by Douglas M. Peers

Between 1700 and 1885 the British became the paramount power on the Indian subcontinent, their authority extending from Sri Lankain the south to the Himalayasin the north. It was a massive empire, inspiring both pride and anxiety amongst the British, and forcing change upon and disrupting the lives of its Indian subjects.

Yet it is not simply a history of conquest and subjugation, or dominance and defeat: interaction and interdependency powerfully shaped the histories of all involved. The end result was a hybrid empire. India may have become by 1885 the jewel in the British crown, but by that same year a series of changes had occurred within Indian society that would set the foundations for the modern states of India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh. This book provides a concise introduction to these dramatic changes.

informative, insightful, full of primary sources
By snowbat
This book was accessible to someone like me who is still a neophyte in the history of India, but still insightful and interesting enough to build on what I had learned from other sources. Plus, after his analysis section, he includes a lovely appendix of carefully curated snippets of primary sources. I strongly recommend this slim volume as a quick introduction to pre-Raj-era Colonial India.
