Band of Brothers

The fifth volume of Fullmetal Alchemist heavily features the Amestris military and it's members, as well as the series major villains. After fighting Gluttony, the Elric brothers come face to face with the man who created the Homunculi. It's quite interesting to see the full power of the villains on display, and I'm not sure where the series is going to go from here.

The entire 15 the collection is devoted to a flashback to the Ishvalan civil war. Arakawa clearly had one eye on the occupation of Iraq when writing this, and it features some truly haunting artwork. This is definitely one of the better collections

In the world of Fullmetal Alchemist there are many alchemists, two of which are the main characters: Ed and Al Elric. These two brothers broke one of the sacred laws of alchemy, using it on a body. They performed human alchemy, trying to bring a dead person back to life. They paid dearly for that crime. Ed lost his right leg but Al lost his whole body. Ed gave up his left arm as well, so that he could put Al's soul in a suit of armor.

During the years after that, Ed and Al sought to break that rule again so that they could restore their bodies. They returned to their teacher and found a clue to what they sought, a picture that had been taken in front of a bookstore. In the photo they saw the book that they needed, a tome that was available when the picture was taken but later banned everywhere. They hoped there would still be a small chance they could find it if they traveled there.

The Elric brothers secretly left their teacher because they knew she would disapprove of their plan. While walking to the train station they were attacked by a pack of chimera, monsters created by alchemy. Before the chimera could strike, a voice warned the brothers to run away. The chimeras chased the voice, so they were able to escape.

They safely arrived in the town where the bookstore was located. Luckily they bumped into a boy named Kip who was the adopted son of the store's owner. His parents were killed in the Ishbalan war. His father Luon was best friends with Kip's real parents. Luon was the assistant to a crazy doctor who was working on a formula that he hoped could make him eternally young and bring dead people back to life.

The book wasn't there, so they decided to seek out the doctor and see if he would be willing to share his research. On the way there they met Ed's friend Colonel Roy Mustang. Roy worked for Luon when they served in the military together. He asked Ed to convince Luon leave the doctor and return to the side of justice.

Will Ed be able to save Luon from the darkness? Will he find the research he needs? To find out, read this excellent book!

liked it but wonder why the summary of the fourth novel is in the description for this book

I recently bought this novel along with two others and doesn't take too long to read with 225 pages (I think it took me a little over an hour to read through it, though I tend to go through a book quickly when it's short). The inside cover page features a colored illustration while the others in the novel are three black and white images and a sketch illustration at the end of the book. The book's size is small enough for comfortable reading and the chapters are separated with title pages. Overall I think the story was good, though the ending fight seemed resolved quickly and the afterword for this novel has a short comic strip about Ed.

*NOTE: I was looking around for information about the novels and thought it was odd that Amazon and other websites I looked at had the summary of the fourth novel (Under the Faraway Sky: [...] for the summary of this novel. The copy I bought was not titled "To Each His Own Bonds" like the image on here (my attached images are of the version I received without a Vol 5 on the cover and titled "The Ties That Bind", which I'm guessing was the version included in the 27 volume box set of the manga).

It covers pretty well the Ruby language and shows deeply a lot ...

I reviewed the book (courtesy of Manning). As a Ruby developer I found this book very accurate and serious. It covers pretty well the Ruby language and shows deeply a lot of aspects. As Ruby and the standard library is quite a big subject, the book cannot cover everything but the author was able to select the part of the standard library that is fundamental and that is not going to disappear in next Ruby releases (for instance the "curses" library was removed and is available as a gem as from Ruby 2.1).

The intended audience is definitely programmers knowing object oriented programming who either want to refresh their Ruby knowledge, either want to learn the language as a new language. But as the book states, it does not teach programming. But we feel that the author really wants to be precise and comprehensive, he struggles with the need to explain things that some people might not know, while many people already know...

For Ruby programmers the book is useful as a reference for parts of the language he/she does not use on a daily basis.

The book covers the regular expressions and can be useful for the use of regexp beyond its usage with the Ruby language.

But the book has some weaknesses.

The chapter 6 is not precise enough about exceptions, "can i catch more than 1 exception?", "what if I write rescue A, then B, if B derives from A, is B ever going to be catched?".

In chapter 7, the "Bid" example presents the operator (object comparison) but is not clear enough that comparing objects does not necessarily involve the class relationship but is "duck-typing" (the nature of the Ruby language).

The book is wrong about the $n "global variables", they are not behaving at all as global variables (the book mentions the strangeness when talking about threads but it is much more subtle), if you run next code you can see that the $1 value is not set when entering the "show_1" method and even if $1 changes inside the method, the original value is still available at the calling point.

In chapter 14, a little error appears in the explanation about the system calls, the text says: "A call to a nonexistent method with backticks raises a fatal error". It should be "program" instead of "method".

As you see I set 4 stars despite the "negative" comments because I did not mention many weak points compared to the book size and I consider that the book is worth reading compared to many poor quality books we find today.

A very good book for learning object-oriented Ruby

David A. Black's well-written text does not try to be a “complete” language reference. Instead, reading The Well-Grounded Rubyist is like having a well-experienced and patient mentor close at hand–a mentor who willingly offers up clear examples and explanations. If you are a Ruby beginner, you likely will want to keep this book around as a go-to how-to reference long after you have learned and begun to work with Ruby.

Ruby can be used in several different programming paradigms, including functional and imperative. But be advised: The Well-Grounded Rubyist is essentially all-object-oriented-all-the-time in its approach.

“Ruby is an object-oriented language, and the sooner you dive into how Ruby handles objects, the better,” the author states. “Accordingly, objects will serve both as a way to bootstrap the discussion of the language (and your knowledge of it) and as a golden thread leading us to further topics and techniques.”

As other reviewers have noted, it is helpful to have at least a little bit of programming experience before tackling this book. And the Code Academy's Ruby classes and some other online tutorials are good places to start (that's exactly how I began learning Ruby a couple of years ago). But Black's book does start the reader with simple math at the interactive Ruby console program, irb, and then writing, saving, and running a simple program at the "Hello, Fahrenheit" level before moving ahead.

Great book, clear, deep and useful

I'm a Ruby developer, and I've found this book useful. Is not a book about programming, is a book about Ruby, and the author was able to catch quite every aspect of the language explaining its operation in a clear and meaningful way.

Seasoned developers probably will use this book as a reference more than for learning.
Newcomers to the language reading this book can really have a boost in understanding both the basics ( part 1 ), the most used classes of the Ruby StdLib ( part 2 ) and the more advanced dynamic features in the part 3.

Overall is a great book, clear, deep and useful. It has some quirks, but you can overcome that with a little of personal research.

Delivered at Princeton University in 1951 and 1952, Jarrell's lectures reflect a passionate appreciation of Auden's work, a witty attack from an informed opponent, and an important document of a major poet's reception.

Jarrell's lectures offer readings of many of Auden's works, including all of his long poems, and illuminate his singular use of a variety of stylistic registers and poetic genres. In the lecture based on the article ''Freud to Paul,'' Jarrell traces the ideas and ideologies that animated and, at times, overwhelmed Auden's poetry. Randall Jarrell wrote one of the major mid-20th-century works of poetry criticism (Poetry and the Age, 1953); Burt wrote the major 21st-century study (so far) of Randall Jarrell (Randall Jarrell and His Age, 2002). In his introduction to this set of six lectures, which Jarrell delivered at Princeton in 1952, Burt establishes the key, if contentious, role W.H. Auden's work played in Jarrell's own development as a poet and critic. As New Yorker writer Adam Gopnick points out in his foreword, Jarrell's lectures present an "almost comically detailed analysis of the transformation of Auden's rhetoric in the 1940s," a crux period in Auden's career-he had emigrated to the United States from England a few years earlier, and in that time he had come to abjure the "We must love one another or die" sentiments of "September 1st, 1939," which he composed almost immediately after his arrival. Gopnick finds the essays to be "a cutting contest without cuts, an occasion of witticisms more than a battle of wits." Indeed, Jarrell does seem to be trying to best the older (and more famous) poet at the same time that he is lavishing attention on his smallest rhetorical shifts-and working hard to impress the audience as he sings for his supper (Burt details the financial arrangements). Jarrell registers multiple complaints about Auden's seeming "liberal pieties" (as Gopnick calls them, though he does not think them such) and the taming effect they have had on his verse. Despite the ambivalence evident throughout the lectures, it is clear that Jarrell thought Auden worth reading to the dregs. The number of people today who have read Auden's poetry of the 1940s is smaller than the work merits, and the same goes for Jarrell's poetry and criticism throughout his career. This set of critical engagements, published here for the first time, allows one to start right in the middle of two mid-century titans.

When he arrived on the American scene in 1939, he continued to dazzle readers in this country--none more so than Randall Jarrell, who had been reading and admiring him from the start. Auden's triumphal march across the next decade, though, began to disconcert Jarrell, and these Princeton lectures are the record of his mixed feelings. Six Fabulous Lectures on Auden (but not for the novice).

This 136 page series of lectures, a bravura treatment of a poet's work which has yet to be deciphered fully (delivered at Princeton University in 1952-53) is interesting because it is a provocative close reading of a poet by a poet (and critic). Jarrell's lectures, addressed to an invited audience, assume we (they) have read Auden and that we now his work well. As well as fixing the template with which subsequent critics and criticisms have approached the Auden oeuvre, in terms of dividing up the poet's work into discrete parts, Jarrell's encomium is a very readable take on a poet whose work he knew better than most. Jarrell's comments are often provocative and even where he was wrong, and strong editing and a good Introduction shows where he was occasionally wrong (Auden's use of rhetoric), anyone wishing for a look under the Auden bonnet (hood) to try to understand both what influenced the poet's work and how he achieved certain effects, will find this book fascinating.
The extensive notes on the Lectures themselves contain a mine of useful information. Beautifully produced (hardback) and well worth the price, it is both an assault and an homage to Auden and achieves what Auden is reported to have done when he was faced with a body of poetry, Jarrell attempts to decipher the codes that shape the work. Auden's poetry forced and continues to force theory to expand its reach so it can accommodate him, not something that can be said of too many poets.
Readers who are new to Auden might read the Cambridge Companion to WH~, 19 contemporary essays on most aspects of the poet. For those seeking an update on Jarrell's lectures, find John R. Boly's book, 'Reading Auden, The Returns of Caliban' or Rainer Emig's book, 'Towards a Postmodern Poetics', both heavy on theory but these books completely changed my thinking on Auden and on the apparently innocent habit of reading. Bahlke's earlier collected essays are interesting but were written before the poet's work was more properly understood. Was it ever.

You Need to Read This Book!!

This is an amazing book. Mr. Peskin's research shows the importance of Omega-6 in our diet and how most of the Omega-6 we get is adulterated. So we need to include the right oils (for example, sesame and sunflower) to get the Omega-6 our body, heart, arteries, organs and skin needs. The hype about Omega-3 and fish oil is just wrong - we are not cold blooded fish that need lots of Omega-3. Since I have change my oil intake to get more Omega-6, I find I want fewer carbohydrates, my dry eyes have improved tremendously, I sleep longer at night without waking to go to the bathroom, I adjust to the cold weather better and I have lost weight. And this is after about 5 weeks of use.

Mr. Peskin also explains how to evaluate studies and how the statistics often quoted to "prove" a product helps are misused to sell the product or to prove a point. He shows how to evaluate for yourself whether the results quoted are accurate and how many results are just ignored when they don't fit the researcher's expectations.

Dr. Jay Rowen is also an contributor to the book and gives much of his personal experience and diet. His collaboration with Mr. Peskin adds to the understanding of the diet changes.

This is a revolutionary book and contrary to most popular opinion. But if you want to protect your heart and arteries and lose weight, get this book and understand how to become more healthy by getting the right amount of Omega-6.

Science based truth about Omega 3 dangers, a Most for Arthritis, Inflammation, Diabetes and Overweight sufferers

I came about the recommendation to read this book while researching papers about Omega 3 Esters vs Green Lipid Mussel Extract as I was supplementing close to 4 grams or more of pharmaceutical grade fish oil for more than 2 years without benefit for my conditions. This book pointed me in the right direction and have changed the way I eat and supplement now.

If your are taking or are planning to take any Omega 3 supplement, have diabetes, arthritis, etc., you need to read this science and research based book. It changed the way I supplemented my Omega 3 and got me started on a better type of diet where I it great and without going hungry. As of today I been following for 3 weeks the recommendations on the book and my hand's and knees pain and inflammation are now pretty much gone, and I'm not taking NSAIDs like I used to. I already lost 17 pounds (244 to 227) from belly, waist, back and chest fat, without any change in exercise, although starting next week I will start walking and do moderate lifting as I feel great and the pain and inflammation in my body is subsiding. The best part, I eat a lot of good things and I'm feeling satisfied with no cravings!

Missing crucial data

Not sure what to make of this book. The premise sounds great but research shows that aging bodies may not be able to utilize PEO's directly. The author encourages us NOTto take fish oil because we can get too much omega-3. However, if one's body cannot convert PEO's to omega-3 and omega-6 then one does not get omega-3s and 6's. That is the crux of the problem. My take-away was to limit my omega-3 intake somewhat more than I had been and to actually increase my omega-6. (Although omega-6 is the prevalent oil in the seed oil category found in supermarket oils, I do not use supermarket oils and therefore need to supplement them.) I think the book should have paid more attention to the older people who cannot convert PEOs into omega3 and 6 oils and thus leaves a wrong idea that anyone can do this conversion.

a classic text in applied mathematics

This is one of the finest textbooks on applied mathematics. It is appropriate for a wide range of levels and disciplines. A moderately paced graduate class can finish most of the chapters in a full year. The first two chapters cover material that is difficult to find elsewhere and nowhere is it better handled. The real boon to this book is the constant integration of physical reasoning with solid mathematical theory. To be sure, many of the more complicated ideas are only mentioned, but the later chapters pick these up and go much further. It covers basic heat and wave applications, but also Brownian motion and gas dynamics. A solid calculus background is needed, which includes vector calculus and convergence issues. Eigenvalues and some functional analysis are needed. Many books on elementary partial differential equations spend all their time on the big three: heat, wave and Laplace. Often, graduate texts are thoroughly awash with Sobolev spaces and weak convergence and the physical problem, i.e., the actual model, is all but ignored. This classic text is the bridge between elementary and advanced applied mathematics. In some respects, it is self-contained. Guenther and Lee have written an indispensable book.

About the Author
Over the past 17 years, Terrence Masson has served the film and computer graphics community with inspiring production leadership, innovative creative techniques and technical problem solving. After earning his BFA (Graphic Design and Art History) MA (Computer Animation) Terrence spent his early years in New York and Boston in graphic design, commercial flying logos, large format and interactive projects; specializing in camera and lighting. Since founding his own consulting company Digital Fauxtography Inc. in 1994 Terrence has built and led teams ranging in size from six to sixty. Major studio collaborations have included founding positions at The Trumbull Company (1992), Digital Domain (1993) and Warner Brothers (1994), consulting to Sony Pictures Imageworks (1995) and Dreamworks (2003) and two tours at Industrial Light + Magic (1991 and 1996-2000). Terrence also single-handily created the original CG animation and rendering techniques to launch South Park the television series in 1996. As an independent VFX Supervisor and Senior Technical Director he has contributed to over 20 major film projects including Fantastic Four, Hook, True Lies, The Star Wars Trilogy Special Edition, Spawn, Batman Forever, Small Soldiers and Star Wars Episode I: Phantom Menace. Large format projects include Luxor for Doug Trumbull and Mars Odyssey for Simex. His many national commercial projects include the original Bud Frogs (1995) for Digital Domain and the award winning Dodge Molecule for ILM-Commercials. Not only are the computer acronyms explained, they are accompanied with a little history of the term and references to who and why uses the products.
Also many popular software titles are referred to, which is great for deciding what software to use to meet my goals.

About the Author
Ian Lancaster Fleming was a British journalist, naval intelligence officer, and creator of the fictional British spy, James Bond. Excellent Resource for Individuals and coaches/mentors

This is an excellent self-coaching book with great content. I think the title and sub-title do not fully convey the value and message of the book - in my view it is more about how to actually achieve your goals. I think the title might lead the potential reader to think the book is only/primarily for executives. I believe the book can be a very valuable resource for anyone interested in achieving their goals.

Dr. Jason Selk, the author, is an executive coach and a "mental toughness" coach for many world class athletes including the St. Louis Cardinals baseball team. He draws on his vast experience of executive and sports coaching to write a very engaging and entertaining book. But the real value is the well laid out principles and exercises he gives. These are the exercises and examples he uses in coaching very high level executives. So this book gives you some very valuable lessons in personal achievement at a very reasonable price.

The book presents 10 mental toughness concepts, with a separate chapter devoted to each concept. The concepts are grouped into four major categories: The foundation - defining your specific goals and who you are. The second category deals with the process of achievement, setting priorities and how to hold yourself accountable. The third major category covers focus, improving execution and consistency. Here Dr. Selk gives lessons on controlling your emotions, scripting your presentations and the 100 second mental workout. The final category is about overcoming obstacles. Here he introduces the concept of "Relentless Solution Focus" - focusing on the solution rather than the problems. He also introduces us to "Gable Discipline" - a wrestler and now wrestler coach who is a master at discipline.

There are a number of excellent and noteworthy points in the 10 mental toughness concepts. The need for setting product and process goals was one of the better ones. His advice is to set product goals - the outcomes you want AND set process goals - the specific things you will do daily/weekly to achieve your product goals. I think far too many people fail to achieve their goals because they set product but not process goals. Dr. Selk gives some very good tips and exercises on how to set and hold yourself accountable for setting process goals.

The 100 second mental workout is another great coaching tool. If you will use the tools set forth in this book, you will greatly improve your life.

The book is well written and very easy to read. There are plenty of stories and real life examples which serve to deepen the reader's understanding of the ideas being presented. The book has lots of suggested exercises - actually Dr. Selk is a little stronger than merely suggesting - but therein lies the real value of the book. At the end of the book, the 10 mental toughness concepts are summarized with commentary about the why and how of the concept. This makes it easy to refer to and refresh your knowledge of the concepts on a regular basis.

This can be a very valuable resource for anyone who wishes to get better, more positive results in life. It is also a great resource for anyone coaching/mentoring others.

"It's All in Your Head"

"The fundamentals presented in this book have worked for every one of my clients who has made the commitment to using them over the past 15 years. When I say every client, I don't mean most clients. I literally mean every client." Dr. Jason Selk, page XV of the Preface.

The author made a bold and confident statement to begin this book. You will see why after reading this entertaining, informative and highly instructional work. This book will force you to consider something that many of us refuse to recognize: We alone are the masters of our destiny.

Short Organized Format

There are four parts with ten concise chapters (totaling less than 200 pages) accompanied by a lengthy introduction, a concise notes section and detailed index. The author's writing style is motivational and supportive. It is as if he is talking directly to you during a one-on-one session. Dr. Selk also provides a great number of anecdotes from clients, such as the St. Louis Cardinals, who have benefited from his advice. This format provides actual case studies for you to study and learn.

Innovative Features

There is a "Choose to Be Great" synopsis at the end of each chapter to reinforce key points. Another feature that I liked was that the author asks you to do things as you read the book. For example, on page 25, "My purpose of life is..." Dr. Selk makes you write down specific goals and objectives. He gives you charts, fill-in-the blank lists (such as the Success Log) and urges you to use electronic schedulers to stay on the course. If you don't like to challenge yourself, exceed expectations and perform self-evaluation, you probably will not like this book. It is a call to action. One that most of us will be pleased to answer.

Negative Facet

The only thing that I didn't like in this excellent book was the frequent use of "successful professional, beautiful wife and children" examples. Some readers may find these particular comparisons as overly materialistic and/or idealistic. I also recognize that many of the author's clients are high-achievers and would benefit from such scenarios.

How-to Guide to Mental Toughness

Whether you are a professional athlete or a professional bricklayer, you will benefit from Dr. Selk's hands-on advice. The next time that you visit the doctor and he or she says, "It's all in your head," show them this book. :)

Outstanding Resource!
