Fast Solvers for Mesh-Based Computations presents an alternative way of constructing multi-frontal direct solver algorithms for mesh-based computations. It also describes how to design and implement those algorithms.

The book’s structure follows those of the matrices, starting from tri-diagonal matrices resulting from one-dimensional mesh-based methods, through multi-diagonal or block-diagonal matrices, and ending with general sparse matrices.

Each chapter explains how to design and implement a parallel sparse direct solver specific for a particular structure of the matrix. All the solvers presented are either designed from scratch or based on previously designed and implemented solvers.

Each chapter also derives the complete JAVA or Fortran code of the parallel sparse direct solver. The exemplary JAVA codes can be used as reference for designing parallel direct solvers in more efficient languages for specific architectures of parallel machines.

The author also derives exemplary element frontal matrices for different one-, two-, or three-dimensional mesh-based computations. These matrices can be used as references for testing the developed parallel direct solvers.

Based on more than 10 years of the author’s experience in the area, this book is a valuable resource for researchers and graduate students who would like to learn how to design and implement parallel direct solvers for mesh-based computations.

The book has all the elements required for a reader ...

The book has all the elements required for a reader to successfully implement mesh-based adaptive end-to-end solution. The author's explaining ability is remarkable as are the results he claims to achieve with his software. Although quite expensive, the book is certainly worth is price and may accelerate your research by effectively fast-forwarding your knowledge to the frontiers of the adaptive computational methods field.

Great, comprehensive book on new generation multi-frontal solvers

I wish this book was on the market while I was trying to familiarize myself with a subject of fast, direct solvers for problems like Finite Element Method. Certainly, there are multiple papers available, but purchasing them one by one just to find out that something was missing anyway was disappointing. This is why I've given a warm welcome to this book that is comprehensive in its nature and covers practically everything that should be said in this subject. There is a multitude of examples and clear illustrations. Efficiency comparison with the traditional solvers make it also clear that this is where the future is.

HOSSEIN G. ASKARI is Aryamehr Professor of International Business at The George Washington University. He is the author or coauthor of 15 earlier books and monographs, including Economic Sanctions: Examining Their Philosophy and Efficacy (Praeger, 2003), coauthored with Forrer, Teegen, and Yang.

JOHN FORRER is Director of the Institute for Global Management and Research at The George Washington University. He has consulted extensively on international energy and environmental issues.

HILDY TEEGEN is Associate Professor of International Business at The George Washington University. She has written extensively on international negotiations and business partnerships and Latin American economic affairs.

JIAWEN YANG is Assistant Professor of International Business, The George Washington University. He is the author of numerous articles and book chapters on exchange rate pass-through, international capital flows, and the financial crises in Latin America and Asia.

Math Overboard fixed it!

I am 72 years old with some kind of strange compulsion to understand why I never understood math.
Now I know! It is about understanding the underlying Concepts of what "math" actually Is....most specifically
basic foundations of numbers...very early on. It is NOT about memorizing...without UNDERSTANDING...they both
go together or it is All lost. There is a significant difference between "passing" a course and being truly educated.

Best refresher text I've come across

I needed to brush up on long-forgotten math, and so I looked at quite a few math textbooks before making a decision. This one looked like it came closest to meeting my needs, so I ordered it. It actually exceeded my expectations! Not only did it cover material I learned when I was young in a clear and concise manner, it also helped me understand basic concepts that I don't think anyone ever taught me in school. It doesn't condescend or waste time - it truly is written for adults and treats its readers as such. I enjoyed reading it - and I always thought I was not a math person! I plan to get volume 2 next.

Not good at math to begin with? Don't waste your money!

If you need any hand holding with math, forget this book. I can only imagine that the three people who gave it five stars were already good at math and just needed a refresher. I'm terrible but I still feel satisfaction when I can solve a problem. I read recently that doing math is a good way to prevent cognitive decline so I decided to find a math book that would present problems and solutions that I could understand. This book presents the rules and explanations in ABCD format and then gives a few problems with no step-by-step solutions of the actual problems so if you can't solve a problem you have no way of figuring out why. I had to turn to the internet to find out how to do the problems. In fractions my problem was that at first the book dealt with adding two mixed fractions and I could handle that with the explanation given but then there was a problem with three fractions and no explanation was given in layman's terms on how to arrive at the answer. Besides all of the above, the book is very complicated to read.

A very readable, insightful explanation of how industrialized slaughter really works

It starts out a bit dry and technical, but stay with it-- this true account of one man's experience in a typical large-scale (~2500 per day) cattle slaughterhouse and "processing" facility is insightful on many levels. It gives a very detailed account of exactly how these operations work, but for me what was the most eye-opening insights were those related to how complex the conflicts of interest are, and how they in turn make it impossible for either the USDA or the slaughterhouse workers to adequately monitor the quality of the "product" and the way the animals are treated. In addition, he infused his perspective with compassion for the people who work there, in addition to compassion for the animals. The way the reality of what is happening there has to be concealed even from the people who work there (by designing the building with lots of concealing walls, turns, etc) underscores how much that ignorance is required in order for people to do their jobs. The mental "compartmentalizing" of what they are doing reminds me of the same coping technique used by people working in the Nazi concentration camps. People do things they would never normally do when they mentally compartmentalize it and remove their focus from the suffering of the person or animal in front of them. It made it even more clear to me that the market for animal products must vanish in order for this insidious factory farming machine to come to a stop. And this books helps the reader take the step of SEEING and KNOWING that is essential in order for pity, mercy and compassion to follow. May pity, mercy, and compassion truly follow for everyone who reads this book.

Very important book

"Every Twelve Seconds" is a very important book. It is a well-written and gripping account of what exactly happens in a modern industrial slaughterhouse. It is absolutely horrifying - I really hope that word gets out about this great book. I also appreciate that it is not a long book and that it is so clearly written, with very helpful diagrams that I found myself constantly referring to.

About the Author
Oscar G. Brockett will always have an international reputation as a theatre historian. A Distinguished Scholar honoree of the American Society of Theatre Research, he received career achievement awards from both the Association for Theatre in Higher Education and the United States Institute for Theatre Technology. In addition, he was a recipient of the Robert Lewis Medal for Lifetime Achievement in Theatre Research. After receiving his Ph.D. from Stanford University, he taught at several major American universities and at the University of Bristol in England. He also served as president of the American Theatre Association, dean of the College of Fine Arts at the University of Texas, editor of THEATRE JOURNAL, and editorial board member of the ASIAN THEATRE JOURNAL. He held the prestigious University of Texas Z.T. Scott Family Chair in Drama and was director of the Center for Dramatic and Performance Studies for several years. Dr. Brockett authored many articles in leading journals and several books, including HISTORY OF THE THEATRE. At the time of his passing, he was serving as a distinguished teaching professor at the University of Texas at Austin and the dean of the Fellows of the American Theatre.

Robert J. Ball has ample experience as a successful teacher of Introduction to Theatre and Theatre Appreciation courses at a number of large and small universities, including Trinity University, the University of Texas, and Vanderbilt University. He is also a practicing actor and director with numerous professional credits in American regional theatres, as well as credits for national and international touring productions. Dr. Ball received his Ph.D. in theatre history and criticism from the University of Texas and is currently the chair and artistic director of the Theatre Arts program at the University of the Incarnate Word.

John Fleming, a former Brockett student, was chosen by the Brockett estate to extend the legacy of Oscar Brockett's foundational text. He has taught Introduction to Theatre, Theatre History, and a variety of other classes at the University of Texas, Auburn University, and Texas State University. His books and articles focus on contemporary theatre, while his plays have been popular with undergraduate audiences. After many years as chair of the Department of Theatre and Dance at Texas State University, Dr. Fleming now serves as dean of the College of Fine Arts and Communication.

Andrew Carlson is managing director of the Oscar G. Brockett Center for Theatre History and Criticism at the University of Texas at Austin, where he teaches Introduction to Theatre, Dramatic Literature, Dramaturgy, and Shakespeare. He is a professional dramaturg and actor, who writes about theatrical practice in scholarly contexts. In addition, he is an artistic associate with the Great River Shakespeare Festival in Winona, Minn., where he has performed roles such as Hamlet (HAMLET), Edmund (KING LEAR), and Hotspur (HENRY IV, PART I).

About the Author
As a professor, Diane E. Papalia has taught thousands of undergraduates at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. She received her bachelor’s degree, majoring in psychology, from Vassar College and both her master’s degree in child development and family relations and her Ph.D. in life-span developmental psychology from West Virginia University. She has published numerous articles in such professional journals as Human Development, International Journal of Aging and Human Development, Sex Roles, Journal of Experimental Child Psychology and Journal of Gerontology. Most of these papers have dealt with her major research focus, cognitive development from childhood through old age.

Dr. Sterns received his Ph.D. in Life-Span Developmental Psychology from West Virginia University in 1971. His major areas of interest include industrial gerontology, life-span development, training and career development. He is Director of the Institute for Life- Span Development and Gerontology. Courses typically taught include psychology of adulthood and aging, industrial/gerontological psychology, and undergraduate psychology courses. His publications have appeared in many gerontology journals including Experimental Aging Research, The Counseling Psychologist, Journal of Gerontology, Generations, Journal of Applied Gerontology. He has served on the editorial board of Psychology and Aging, The Gerontologist, and Journal of Women and Aging and serves on the editorial boards of Experimental Aging Research and Research on Aging. He is a Fellow of the American Psychology Association, Gerontological Society of America and the American Psychological Society. Current research includes training of adult and older adult workers, personality factors, and retirement adjustment and satisfaction, as well as personality factors in housing choices in retirement. Other research includes alcohol treatment and aging, and life planning issues for older adults with mental retardation.

Ruth Duskin Feldman is an award-winning writer and educator. With Diane E. Papalia and Sally Wendkos Olds, she coauthored the fourth and seventh editions of Human Development and the eighth edition of A Child's World. She also is coauthor, with Dr. Papalia and Cameron J. Camp, of Adult Development and Aging. A former teacher, she has developed educational materials for all levels from elementary school through college and has prepared ancillaries to accompany the Papalia-Olds books. She is author or coauthor of four books addressed to general readers, including Whatever Happened to the Quiz Kids? Perils and Profits of Growing Up Gifted. She has written for numerous newspapers and magazines and has lectured extensively and made national and local media appearances throughout the United States on education and gifted children. She received her bachelor's degree from Northwestern University, where she was graduated with highest distinction and was elected to Phi Beta Kappa.

Basic information, nothing special. It fit the purpose of the class I was taking. I would say this is a great book for someone who is just beginning to learn about adult development and aging. However, if you already know the basics, this is more of a review than a fresh new table of stats.
