- Harvard Business School Press - f you need more from your job than a wage, you will likely find some pearls of wisdom in this story. If you like what you read here, check out Komisar's article in the March/April '00 HBR. If you're interested in some insight into how VC's look at business ideas, there is certainly plenty of information within this story for you too. Finally, about the five stars, the book is absolutely deserving of them. This story hit me right between the eyes in so many ways, was so elegantly presented, and so refreshing, that I highly recommend it.

Prospective entrepreneurs may think they know everything there is to know about starting a business in Silicon Valley. They can draw up business plans, have meetings with venture capitalists, maybe even get funded and actually launch a start-up. However, in The Monk and the Riddle, Silicon Valley sage Randy Komisar reasons that's only half the equation for success. And it may not be the important half. Komisar has worked with a number of companies--Apple, LucasArts Entertainment (the gaming division of George Lucas's empire), and WebTV among them--and has come to a rather startling conclusion: if you can't see yourself doing this business for the rest of your life, don't start it. Komisar is among a new breed of executives who have been called "virtual CEO's." Introducing a human element to Silicon Valley the world of VC's

I'm a University of Baltimore student enrolled in the Entrepreneurship Fellows program and this was the recommended reading for my ENTR-320 class. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and highly recommend it, but find it a bit difficult to summarize because of the unique way it is written. This is not your typical non-fiction entrepreneurship literature. Rather, it is a story that follows the development of a start-up's business plan, one that Komisar is reviewing for Frank, his venture capitalist friend. Throughout the story, Komisar transitions seamlessly back and forth from the present to his past, reflecting on his own personal experiences through the duration of his career. From graduating from Harvard to his time at Apple, each story touches on unique nuances of start-ups and business relationships. While the book passively sheds light on the process of venture capitalist funding as well as the organization of start-ups, the greatest wisdom I gained was from analyzing Komisar's character. The advice he gives throughout the story is honest and intimate, asserting that Silicon Valley and the world of VC's can have an impact on much more than the bottom line of businesses. The moral of the story is simple; it is about the journey, not the destination. You must read for yourself to discover why the book is titled "The Monk and the Riddle".

My take on "The Monk and the Riddle"

I am currently a University of Baltimore student enrolled in the survey in the Entrepreneurship course and this is my recommended reading. Randy Komisar focuses not solely on the monetary success of business, but trying to make a difference through business. He emphasizes being creative and being true to yourself in all business ventures. On page 55, he compares business to painting and sculpting. He goes on to explain that business is about personal expression and coping with change in society. I never looked at business as a creative outlet before. Komisar really made me consider what it means to grow as a person through a business, not just financial growth. It makes sense to follow his ideas because if you are getting more than just financial benefits out of your business, you will want to put in more effort, time, and thought into it, resulting in more success and personal gratification. I really liked how Komisar has this unorthodox way of thinking about business. I do however think it maybe little naive to not rely so heavily on numbers but on personal expression and gratification. Most business owners want to see numbers increasing in their bank accounts and employees want to see raises. It may be difficult to bring over old school business owners and entrepreneurs to this way of thinking. Unfortunately, for many in today’s business world, money and profits are the bottom line. I do think that younger generations of entrepreneurs could learn a lot from Komisar and this book.

Entrepreneurs within Silicon Valley as reference to Lenny believe that they have all the right keys to starting a business. But there is a retrospect to this situation as most entrepreneurs only have half of what is necessary to start a business the proper and successful way. As Randy Komisar explains that he has worked with some of the top companies within today’s market such as Apple, LucasArts Entertainment, WebTv, and TiVo. Komisar is a part of a new breed of executives who have been called virtual CEO’s but their job is different from those of a consultant. Where their job is to advise but instead they also work for these internet “startup” companies or small high tech companies. With the help from writer Kent Lineback; Komisar is able to fuse the story of his own and other entrepreneurs to ultimately show how business deals and ventures in Silicon Valley are started. I liked the charisma that Komisar instilled within all his stories suggesting that ones’ passion and vision are just as important as a well-crafted business plan. This book and notion that Randy Komisar has can easily help other entrepreneurs as it can point those looking to start a business in the right direction instead of having them wonder. The author criticized business plans based on passion, motive, opportunity, and its functionality in real world aspects but I disliked that if your idea wasn’t big enough, it simply wouldn’t work.
