About the Author

Since completion of a B.Eng. in Civil Engineering in 1981 and M.Eng. in Structural Engineering in 1987, Mr. Unsworth has held Professional Engineering and Management positions concerning track, bridge and structures maintenance, design and construction at Canadian Pacific Railway.

He is currently Vice President, Structures of the American Railway Engineering and Maintenance-of-way Association (AREMA) and has served as Chairman of AREMA Committee 15 – Steel Structures. In addition, he is current Chair of the Association of America Railroads (AAR) Bridge Research Advisory Group and is a member of the National Academy of Sciences Transportation Research Board (TRB) Steel Bridges Committee. Mr. Unsworth is also a member of the Canadian Society for Civil Engineering (CSCE) and International Association of Bridge and Structural Engineers (IABSE). He is a licensed Professional Engineer in six Canadian Provinces.

He has written papers and presented at AREMA Annual Technical Conferences, the International Conference on Arch Bridges, TRB Annual Meetings, the CSCE Bridge Conference and the International Bridge Conference (IBC). He has also contributed to the fourth edition of the Structural Steel Designer’s Handbook and the International Heavy Haul Association (IHHA) Best Practices books.

exactly what I expected

I was looking for a book capable of explain to the reader the design basis of railroad steel bridges and I found it.
I like the presentation of the book and the sections are well organized in order to clear up everything about analysis and design.
I would recommend this book as a "must have" to anyone interested in this topic.

A condensed history of Western Philosophy from the Greeks to the Renaissance. The author has examined primary sources regarding the writings, lives and times of those from the 2500 years leading up to the renaissance who are regarded as the great philosophers of the West, in order to encapsulate what these men and their followers were saying and how they fit into their times, and to deduce from their words just what philosophy is. In the author’s opinion, the history of Philosophy is more the history of a sharply inquisitive cast of mind than of a sharply defined discipline, “a peculiarly stubborn effort to think clearly” in the words of William James.
This volume covers a diverse cast of characters from the fifth and sixth centuries BC (the Milesians, the Pythagoreans, Heraclitus, Parmenides, Zeno, Empedocles, Anaxagoras, Democritus, the Sophists) through the Giants of Philosophy (Socrates, Plato, Aristotle) and their near contemporaries in the 5th century BC to the early middle ages of the pre-Renaissance (Epicureans, Stoics, Sceptics). With the exception of Plato and Aristotle, who found teaching jobs and started Academies that lasted centuries, most of the early philosophers come across as cantankerous elderly vagrants of an argumentative disposition who congregated in public places. Almost all we know of Socrates’ thought is what Plato has him say in various dialogues—he apparently was a master at leading his opponents into contradicting themselves. Plato and Aristotle, on the other hand, were prolific writers and doers who wrote widely on everything (Logic, Ethics, etc. and Science in the case of Aristotle), started the academies that made Athens famous and dominated philosophy until Galileo, Newton and the enlightenment 2000 years later. The importance of these early thinkers was not so much their systems of thought as their struggle to understand their world by reasoning. According to Aristotle the aim of human life is Eudaimonia, which translates as successful, admirable living and all round good fortune leading to a contented state of mind. The age of Aristotle, Plato and Socrates was followed by various competing sects—Epicureans, Stoics and Sceptics being the better known, and finally by the stifling rise of the Christian Church.
There was a two-way exchange between philosophy, on the one hand, and the development of science, economics, psychology, mathematics, sociology, etc., on the other hand, over the 2000 years following the Age of Socrates, Plato and Aristotle; an age which saw the collapse of the Roman Empire, the rise of the Christian church and the general collapse of thought as the dark ages swept over Europe. Fortunately, the learning of ancient Europe was preserved and extended in the Arab world until it was rediscovered during the Renaissance in the 14th and 15th centuries
In 1543 Nicholas Copernicus (1473-1543) published his account of the earth rotating about the sun, refuting both Aristotle and the doctrine of the Catholic Church. Shortly afterwards, Giordano Bruno, a Catholic friar, was burned at the stake for holding this view. Galileo (1564-1642) agreed with Copernicus about the earth rotating about the sun, disagreed with Aristotle and the Church about heavenly and earthly bodies being subject to different forces and built telescopes to view the heavenly bodies and confirm his theories. Galileo also agreed with Democritus and the Epicureans about the atomistic theory of matter, which was recognized to be in conflict with the Church doctrine which held that when bread and wine were consecrated by a priest that they became transubstantiated into the body and blood of Christ, for which beliefs he was condemned by the Church. God was brought into the atomic theory to placate the Church and allow the development of a mechanical science of nature by Gallileo, Kepler, Descartes and Hobbes to go forward. The best thinkers of the 17th century were struggling with questions of how is mental activity to be described in terms of Democritus’ particles of matter, what is the place of man in a mechanistic universe and what is the place of God, laying the groundwork for Newton.

Wonderful and Engaging History

Exceptional. I read Bertrand Russell's A History of Western Philosophy, and while I found it intriguing was a little disappointed that it was less a history, and more of Russell's opinions on philosophies in history (although it was still enjoyable to read, as Russell is a good writer, and has interesting opinions). Gottlieb may have been influenced to write this because of this, as he even mentions Russell's book sometimes within the book.

Having said that, I think Gottlieb's book is far superior as a history of philosophy.

Now, I know the book to give to people wanting to know more about the History of Western Philosophy: this book. Gottlieb's writing is superb, and the narrative flow works excellently. It is extremely throughly researched and sourced, so that if you want to learn more, you can look at his sources easily. More than that, the tone is respectful and objective, and Gottlieb explains the context as well as the arguments of the ancients. Some ideas are very confusing from a modern persepective, but Gottlieb always does a good job of explaining how the idea came about, what environment the idea lived in, and he tries to give the best gloss to it. This is what we need to do if we are to actually engage in new ideas, or consider new ones.

I really, really recommend this book, as it is just full of interesting stories about philosophy, and the interesting people of philosophy. I can't wait to read Gottlieb's next book The Dream of Enlightenment.

Good history. But from the perspective of a progressive ...

Good history. But from the perspective of a progressive ex seminary student, disappointed he gives short shrift to religoius thought. St. Augustine is almost the perfect antidote to the anti science nonsense of fundamentalists and certain evangelicals. And the ability of religious/mystical/mythopoetic thought and experience of both the west and east to inspire just cannot be matched by dry philosophy. Still, an interesting read.

This is a great finale to the Ronin trilogy

This is a great finale to the Ronin trilogy. It's best to start with the first book, there are a lot of references to past events, but the novel is clear enough and compelling enough that if you can't wait for the end you can jump in here.

While this is a fantasy book, I have studied samurai arts for years and this is a good representation of life in ancient Japan. This book takes place during the second Mongol invasion of the island. There is magic and spirits galore, and to me, a distinctly Iago-like evil to the samurai's chief antagonist, Green Tiger. (Harkening back to Othello.)

I can't recommend this enough.

Excellent conclusion to a great series

A great read. I was thankful that the author included the afterword. He accomplished his task in causing this reader at least to wonder where the fiction was and if there was actual history included. Knowing nothing of the Chinese attempts (Khan) to invade Japan I didn't know if those parts were fiction or based on some fact. I was also grateful that the ending wasn't predictable. There were enough twists to keep one guessing. I supported this book on Kickstarter.

For a 'gaijin', Heermann has impressively captured the 'spirit' of the ronin in all three books. I would have never guessed that he spent only 3 years in Japan. The ronin have mythically been revered and idolized as heroes much like the English knights of chivalry. But the essence of being samurai is so unique in the Japanese culture. Heermann has done very well. Thank you!

About the Author

Michael O. Tunnell teaches children’s literature at Brigham Young University and currently serves as chair of the department of teacher education. He has published several professional books, including The Story of Ourselves: Teaching History through Children’s Literature (with Richard Ammon), as well as a variety of journal articles about children’s books and reading. He also writes for young readers. Some of his titles include The Children of Topaz, Mailing May, Wishing Moon, and Candy Bomber: The Story of the Berlin Airlift’s “Chocolate Pilot.” He has twice served on the award selection committee for the John Newbery Medal, the oldest and most prestigious children’s book prize.

James S. Jacobs began his career happily teaching English in grades 7 through 12. Next he taught at a junior college where, to his dismay, he was assigned to teach a children’s literature course. He discovered a new love and life path and returned to graduate school for a degree in children’s literature. Since then he has taught it at Brigham Young University. He interrupted his university life to gain experience in an elementary classroom, teaching fourth grade for two years at a U.S. Army school in Germany. His academic writing focuses on Lloyd Alexander, and he has written one picture book for children.

Terrell A. Young teaches courses in children’s literature at Brigham Young University. He serves as a member of the Board of Directors of the United States Board on Books for Young People (USBBY) and previously served on the International Reading Association Board of Directors from 2009 to 2012. He has been a member of numerous book award committees. He has published many articles and books about reading and children’s literature and was the 2006 recipient of the International Reading Association Outstanding Teacher Educator in Reading Award.

Gregory Bryan completed his Ph.D. at the University of British Columbia. He is now a member of the faculty of education at the University of Manitoba, Canada, where he teaches children’s literature and early and middle years literacy courses. Greg was born and raised in Australia and returns home as often as possible. His books include To Hell and High Water: Walking in the Footsteps of Henry Lawson in which he recounts walking almost 300 miles with his brother in extreme heat as they became the first people ever to recreate the experiences of Greg’s favorite writer, Henry Lawson, during his 1893 trek in Outback Australia. He is currently completing a biography of his favorite picture book illustrator, Paul Goble.
