The (almost) perfect book on the topic

As a MPH student, I was required to purchase this book. I find it great. All the topics are treated in deep and the author's expertise as a former Public Health Professor gives it a first-hand knowledge on the matter. I have enjoyed the case-studies and the interviews have given me relevant and wise advices for the Public health topic, as well as for my professional life. As a con, I'd love this book to have some pictures like funny cartoons to exemplify some points, because it 'just' has conceptual figures, models, and tables. Anyway, it remains as one of the best texts on the field.

Great guide for where to go, what to see, great itineraries, & pictures

This is a great planning guide for where to go, what to see, and great itineraries. It is organized by region and is a nice blend of history, culture, and scenery. It provides some great pictures to wet your appetite. If there are choices of some great things to visit in a region, it tells you the best options and may also offer some great out of the way places that are nearby (like a beautiful waterfall that is a short walk from where you are). That said, it does not tell you much info on where to stay, where to eat, and what hours places are open for. That I would use another guide for.

Great Resource, but too heavy to travel with!

When you are traveling, especially now when you are charged for every bag
priorities change. This is a great book and I recommend it for anyone with the
time to do some research BEFORE you get on the plane. It is heavy, but that is
because the printing is very high quality and what we have come to expect from
National Geographic.

I love this book and I use it for "revisiting" my favorite places in Italy.

National Geographic: The Best of Northern Italy

That's how this guidebook should've been called.

If you're traveling to Italy for the first time and visiting only Rome, Florence and Venice, buy this guidebook. The chapters about these wonderful cities are quite good. Besides, the self-guided walks suggested in Venice and Rome are excellent and very well explained. That's why I gave this guidebook 3 out of 5 stars.

However, if you're planning to visit other places in Italy, save your money and buy a different guidebook. Chapters about Bologna, Milan and, to some extend, Turin and Genoa are OK, but it's amazing how brief the information about other places is. I guess Tuscany and Umbria are adequate as well.

The chapter about Southern Italy is the poorest of all. A brief description of Naples, the Amalfi coast and the Gargano is the main focus along Pompeii, Ercolano & Paestum. A few lines are dedicated to places in Basilicata and Calabria.

There are also a lot places that are not even mentioned. For example, the author considers that if your stay in Italy is short, you shoudn't include Trieste in your itinerary. What if my stay isn't short? What if this isn't the first time I visit Italy? I've just arrived from an amazing week in Trieste and I totally thought that the city was worth visiting. There's no mention of Le Langhe in Piedmont or Il Salento in Apulia and except for a couple of paragraphs about the Dolomiti, Trentino-Alto Adige is practically non-existant. No Molise or Friuli-Venezia Giulia either.

The chapter about Sardinia is the worst. It says that Cagliari is a good base to explore nearby beaches and that Alghero's best beaches lie to the north, but which are those beaches? A lot about places in Sardinia are missing in this chapter and some places like Noto and Ragusa, in Sicily, are also missing.

Besides, This is the third edition, but there is still wrong information from the first edtion. For example, the Antique Market in Milan, is said to take place in the Brera quarter, but it really takes place in the Navigli quarter. When is this information going to be corrected?

Finally, National Geographic is famous for its illustrations, but this guidebook isn't really that case. The few choices of pictures about Sardinia, for example, are terrible. Some pictures also need updating. For instance, Piazza San Carlo, in Turin, is nowadays a pedestrianized area, but, for this chapter, they used an old picture showing a lot of cars parked in it.

Logistics are too general because, I'm under the impression, the author assumes you will have a car. Hotels and restaurants aren't on the budget side, but I always use the Internet when it comes to lodging, so I won't say that is important for me.

All in all, it's good if you're traveling to Rome, Florence, Venice, Milan and around for the first time.

A former head of Cuban counterintelligence, he is internationally regarded as Cuba's foremost authority on US covert operations against Cuba and assassination plots against Fidel Castro. Amusing

This book may not be well-written, but it is highly entertaining. What buffoons we have in our Government! Not only did the U.S. fail to kill Castro, but Castro found out about the plans.

Not included in the book: A sad part of our history which has been hidden from the public is that recently evaluated evidence demonstrates that Castro succeeded in killing John F. Kennedy. Unlike the bumbling U.S. operatives, however, Castro's operatives were better able to plan, execute and conceal their operation. This skill, combined with a U.S. media willing to protect Castro and his regime, has left the Kennedy assassination practically "unsolved." Of course, had the U.S. ever admitted Castro killed Kennedy, a U.S. response would have been necessary. Thus, to avoid escalating the Cold War and risking war with the Soviet Union, the matter was obfuscated and dropped by the U.S. Bottom line: Kennedy is dead, and his killer, Castro, is an old man. Amazing!

Strange narrative of a strange history

Fabian Escalante describes many plans and plots begun, hatched, aborted and terminated against Fidel Castro. Some plots involved persons affiliated with or hired by the American CIA, but many were begun by isolated groups and individuals. The man certainly made a lot of enemies both foreign and domestic, but apparently none of them managed to get a shot off at him or set off an explosion anywhere near him. Therefore it's not accurate to say that Fidel "survived" 634 assassination attempts.

The book contains some inaccuracies. On page 42, US Navy Admiral Arleigh Burke is described as "chief of the US Army." On page 22, the author refers to Batista as the "illiterate general," a strange label for one who as a young man "was a voracious reader with a driving desire to learn," served as an army stenographer who "would one day own one of the largest private libraries in all of Cuba." (Frank Argote-Freyere, Fulgencio Batista, 2006, page 20) Fulgencio Batista: Volume 1, From Revolutionary to Strongman

More puzzling is the author's narration that alternates between excerpts from documents or publications and his own literary reconstructions of meetings and plots. Yet more puzzling is how the author knows the details that he includes about furniture, body language (page 65: "Harvey swallowed"), winks, and drinks consumed over conversations. E.g., page 67 describes a meeting over "spaghetti a la Milanese" with "excellent ros� wine" but fails to name the Washington restaurant where it took place. All of this is presented with a too small number of references for his sources and neither a bibliography or index.

Great Thriller By a Master of the Genre

Harlan Coben has a tendency to create mulitiple plot threads that never seem like they will ever come together. This book is no exception.

In his new book, Coben, explores a problem in today's society. Privacy. He explores how the internet changed everything. Now, that anyone can post anything they want about you and there isn't much you can do.

At the center of these themes is the Baye family (pronounced "by"). Mike and Tia have recently installed a spy program to keep an eye on their sixteen-year-old son, Adam. They do this after a friend of Adam has recently commited suicide. After a cryptic IM, Mike tries to keep Adam home but then he runs away. So begins the search for the teenager. The search takes Mike into the seedy part of the Bronx.

Meanwhile, a killer is at large and killing what seems to be random women. The reason behind it all will keep you guessing until the end. Also, a patient of Mike and his partner needs a kidney transplant and the mother holds a devestating secret. A father tries to come to terms with the fact that he cannot keep his daughter from harm after a popular teacher embarrasses her in class. We also see the police working the killer's case.

All threads converge very nicely into a sweet bow. Some are a little too forced but all in all, the suspense never relents and Coben once again keeps you guessing until the very end when the final secret is revealed.

A complex jigsaw that marks a change of pace

Harlan Coben specializes in writing intricate and suspenseful mysteries that keep you turning pages late into the night. His first (and to my mind, his best) standalone murder mystery was "Tell No One". Since then he has written several more novels which have been increasingly similar in plot. I was pleasantly surprised that "Hold Tight" marks a departure in formula, in that it doesn't center on an ancient murder case or the long ago disappearance of a family member. While this does mean that the book struggles a little to find its own momentum, at least Coben is trying something different instead of giving us more of the same.

"Hold Tight" juggles a number of different stories, all of which in some way center on the theme of parents trying to protect and/or understand their children. While initially they seem to be quite disparate plotlines, eventually the connections between them become apparent and it is this process of putting the jigsaw pieces together that is the most satisfying part of reading "Hold Tight". One of the things that I really like about Harlan Coben's writing is that there are never any loose ends or things that get left unexplained.

"Hold Tight" is a little slower in pace than his other novels and at times it gets confusing keeping track of so many people, but it's still is a satisfying mystery that keeps the suspense going right until the final pages.

an excellent read

I have read all of Harlan Coben's books - I was totally addicted to Myron, Win & Esperanza and at first, was disappointed that his new books did not include these favorite characters. But once I read the first non-Myron book, I had a different opinion about Coben's literary skills. I believe he not only develops interesting and pertinent plots and subplots, but does so with a commanding literary skill. I do not believe the Myron books were as skillfully written as his recent books.

I could not put this book down once I started reading. It took hold within the first pages and I felt this is the best book he has written. I especially like how he develops subplots that seamlessly come together until there is only one plot. I also like the way he chose a topic that is very prevalent to every parent today - internet, text messaging. Before the advent of this technology it was easier to keep track of your child/teenager without totally invading their privacy. With this technology, it becomes almost impossible to know what your child is doing.
I can't wait for his next book! or the TV series being developed on Myron.

Good collection of new pieces

Overall this is a very good collection of transcriptions, but it has some oddities; the old warhorse K.380 is played in the upper register of the guitar, which I guess is interesting, but I don't think it works too well, K.394 has a detuning and then retuning in the middle of the piece(I guess that could work for recording, but live...?). But, otherwise it has some nice transcriptions that I haven't seen before like K.462 which sounds great on guitar. Overall, recommended.
