you HAVE to know it - if you don't I am riding you pretty hard. As I used several sources to study ...

It would be difficult for me to disagree more than I do with the first reviewer. I used Surgical Recall as a medical student. I used Adavanced Surgical Recall as a resident. When I started fellowship several years after practicing general surgery I bought a new edition of Advanced Surgical Recall. This book has consistently been my "go to" source for general surgical pearls for over ten years.

I understand that the previous reviewer wants an electronic version, but the true benefit of this book is being able to conceal the answers and test yourself. Also there have been numerous studies showing that hard copy materials foster more retention than electronic ones.

If you are a medical student, an intern on a general surgery rotation, or an early general surgery resident this book will get you to answer 95% or more of your attendings' pimp questions. As a staff surgeon I consider this book to be the yard stick I measure resident knowledge by - if it's in Recall, you HAVE to know it - if you don't I am riding you pretty hard. As I used several sources to study for my ABSITEs and boards (including Recall) I cannot say which one was my favorite for board review. I do know that for the other 364 days of the year when there is not an ABSITE this should be the book you are carrying with you.

Really LWW? Not formatted for Kindle on iPhone? As an extremely busy surgical resident, do you honestly think I'm going to have time to read/use this book any other way? I would have been all over it, having seen an older print version of the book as a med student. But no iPhone formatting means I'll stick to something else- If I'm going to lug around an actual BOOK, it will certainly be Comprehensive ABSITE Review by Fiser, not this one.

Invaluable for Getting Through the Election of 2016

I am very deeply grateful to this book for helping me through this tempestuous election year (2016). Be forewarned: this is a work of philosophy. It's dense. While it is readable, it takes some effort for people who don't have a philosophical background. But I don't have a background in philosophy, and I was able to absorb it. I took my time and worked through it slowly. What you have here is not reasoned opinion supported by evidence but a valid argument with evidence and examples. At a time when propaganda is literally grinding the earth to pieces, this has been an invaluable resource for me. I feel I now have a foundation for understanding what I take into my nervous system on a daily basis, even with careful filtering of news sources. I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to investigate the origin and power of the illusions that distract us from the single task we should all be focused on, the one that won't wait: how to mitigate and hopefully survive climate chaos.

Not What One Might Expect - a very short review/disclaimer

Each successive generation is abound with new information extolling the machinery of propaganda and how it works. Stanley's analysis is not in the mechanical disposition of Bernays, but belongs to an unusual canon of philosophy nestled between the analytic and continental traditions. You're less likely to find reference to Walter Lippmann than you are to Ludwig Wittgenstein or Victor Klemperer; it is a really unconventional, flawed, but necessary read. It opens, as one might expect, with the exemplar of propaganda: the Third Reich. The initial pages aren't circumscribed to Goebbels and his propaganda ministry, but to the syntactic structure of language that was typical of the regime's public addresses, ordinances, and policies. Our introduction to the world of propaganda might seem a little pat to cushion it in the folds of totalitarianism; however, Stanley is not at all interested in demarcating the moral degrees of propaganda - to any inquiring mind, as far as he's concerned, the truth is the truth. Stanley provides numerous examples of propaganda, from the pre-Christian era to the present day, where deft exploitation of the language inscribed in Detroit's municipal legislation saw the severance of water and electricity across its urban territories. Stanley's work, though, is not a chronology of the excesses of propaganda and its permutations throughout the ages, but a thorough evaluation of its epistemology. Bearing this in mind, one ought not to be surprised that this is largely an exercise in philosophy, as opposed to political science. This is closer in tone to Chomsky's "Manufacturing Consent," a text that stands at the crossroads between political analysis and linguistics, than to the foundational work of Bernays or Lippmann. I must admit that my initial response to the book was one of disappointment, but that was due to my anticipation of its content. It's not that my expectations weren't met, rather they were reserved for a different book. I am not a philosophy major, but have pursued the discipline privately for years; however, those unfamiliar with subjects like the semantic meaning of language would do better to invest their time with Wittgenstein, Kripke, Quine, Searle, et al, before reading this. Those who have a passing understanding of the analytic tradition will likely appreciate what it's going for. This certainly isn't, despite its unassuming title, an easy book to read. If you are interested in reading about propaganda in the sense generally understood, then I'd recommend the authors previously mentioned, especially Lippmann and Chomsky. To Stanley's credit, though, this isn't a deliberately obscure work, but the culmination of intellectual trends in 20th and 21st century philosophy and sociology. I recommend it all the same.

About the Author
Niccol� Ammaniti was born in Rome in 1966. He has written two collections of short stories and six novels, four of which have been translated into English. His second novel, I'll Steal You Away, was long listed for The Independent Foreign Fiction Prize. He was the youngest ever winner of the Italian Viareggio Literary Prize for Fiction for his bestselling novel I'm Not Scared, which has been translated into thirty-five languages. As God Commands received the prestigious Premio Strega Prize in 2007, and his novel Me and You was made into a feature film by Bernardo Bertolucci.

Fun & a must-read for Ammaniti fans, but not his best.

Ammaniti is at it again, with a social satire that skewers elites of all flavors: political, cultural, culinary, athletic, you name it. For my money, he is the unrivaled master of this game in our time. As with his other books (especially, As God Commands/The Crossroads), class division and hypocrisy are central. His sympathies are clearly with the fallen working classes, notwithstanding any Satanist leanings. Truthfully, in Let the Games Begin, unlike in Ammaniti's other books available in English translation, most of the characters are caricatures, with the exception of the two "protagonists," Ciba and Saverio/Mantos. [For example, who could ever forget Quattro Formaggi in As God Commands?] In alternating chapters, the story follows these two: Ciba, a successful (though never successful enough!) writer and Saverio/Mantos, a wannabe provincial high priest of Satanism whose day job is, miserably, to sell furniture for his father-in-law. Their paths cross when Ciba attends the party-of-the-century thrown for all of Roman celebrity by a real estate baron who has managed to obtain a public park and turn it into a luxury, private Safari-land. Mantos and his cohorts agree to temp for the party's caterer so they can kidnap and sacrifice a former heavy metal diva who has committed the mortal sin of converting to popular music. Don't ask. In fact, forget the whole silly plot. Although amusing, it is largely beside the point. The point is to show us what we have become. Ciba appears to be conflicted, but do his self-awareness and value conflicts redeem him in any way? The climactic scenes take place at this mega-party, set in a (real) Roman park, Villa Ada, that (fictionally) was privatized by corrupt politicians. According to the Acknowledgements (presumably written in 2009), Villa Ada truly is "in a terrible state of decay. One of the last green lungs of a metropolis smothered by smog and stunned by noise is about to die." Well, rest assured, Ammaniti will let nature take a little revenge before it bows out. Bottom line: this book is a fun read, a kind of wild ride, and Ammaniti's finger is still firmly on the pulse of western society (though, in 2009, still pre-crisis?). As he says "See you next time." Yes, he will.

Get his "I'm not scared" instead

"Don't judge a book by its cover". For the first time in my life, this saying applies.
Unlike his "I'm not scared" it did not draw me in, on the contrary. Do read the entire sample first. And if you like it, good for you! If not, get his "I'm not scared". It is infinitely better and definitely worth it.

A Song for Nagasaki tells the moving story of this extraordinary man, beginning with his boyhood and the heroic tales and stoic virtues of his family's Shinto religion. It reveals the inspiring story of Nagai's remarkable spiritual journey from Shintoism to atheism to Catholicism. Mixed with interesting details about Japanese history and culture, the biography traces Nagai's spiritual quest as he studied medicine at Nagasaki University, served as a medic with the Japanese army during its occupation of Manchuria, and returned to Nagasaki to dedicate himself to the science of radiology. The historic Catholic district of the city, where Nagai became a Catholic and began a family, was ground zero for the atomic bomb.

After the bomb disaster that killed thousands, including Nagai's beloved wife, Nagai, then Dean of Radiology at Nagasaki University, threw himself into service to the countless victims of the bomb explosion, even though it meant deadly exposure to the radiation which eventually would cause his own death. While dying, he also wrote powerful books that became best-sellers in Japan. These included The Bells of Nagasaki, which resonated deeply with the Japanese people in their great suffering as it explores the Christian message of love and forgiveness. Nagai became a highly revered man and is considered a saint by many Japanese people.

A Masterpiece

Once in a while, I find that I have read something so magnificent that it has a profound significance on my very soul. This is such a book.
The story of Dr. Takashi Naigai is a story of a self made man who eventually meets that still small voice that has been calling to him all of his life.
WWII brought a day of reckoning for thousands upon thousands of creatures just trying to survive the madness of war. As it has been said, "War brings out the worst in man---War brings out the best in man." This story brings real meaning to that statement.
The Japanese are a proud people. They are also deeply rooted in their culture and their religions. Dr. Nagai struggles with tradition, heritage and his inner self; his purpose in life and his duty to his countrymen as well his enemies.
He was a pioneer in the use of x-ray in the medical field. This new kind of energy would have a lasting affect on his young life. At the time, it was unknown just how much radiation a person could absorb before it became lethal. Knowing the danger, he continued on in his research as he sought to save lives by this new method of diagnosing . Already suffering from radiation exposure, he finds himself at ground zero when hell was unleashed on Nagasaki in August of 1945. He lost the love of his life that day, his wife.
His story continues as he throws himself into his work amidst horrors too terrible to even try to understand. His spiritual journey from Japanese traditions, to atheism and agnosticism to finding God through his conversion to the Catholic faith is such a testimony to the power and grace of the one true God.
Was Dr. Nagai a martyr? He certainly didn't think so, however his humble mannerisms and immeasurable faith brought many to the foot of the cross.
"A Song For Nagasaki" is a masterpiece. I am so blessed to have been able to read and review this work. I encourage you to make this a 'must read' on your list for the near future.

Absolutely Compelling...

This book is riveting, one that, once you begin, you cannot stop until you finish. The story of Takashi Nagai is amazing and inspirational, overcoming so many burdens and trials even just to arrive at "mere" belief. He learned what love was and used his gifts and talents for the glory of God, even in the face of pure sadness. I also appreciated that the book describes some history of Christianity in Japan, a topic that I did not know much about. The events of August 9, 1945 are made even more tragic when you realize that not only was there an incredible loss of innocent human life, but the atomic bomb struck at the heart of Catholicism in a country where Christianity has always struggled to gain a foothold. As a Catholic myself, it wrenched my heart to read of the sufferings of so many, but Nagai's story is one of wisdom and hope.

This book has touched my heart in a way that no other book has ever done before. I read "The bells of Nagasaki", before this, so I had some information on Nagai prior to reading. This was a man that was well educated, a metacognitive thinker, and convert. I just finished my book with tears in my eyes. This man's final days were both sad and beautiful at the same time. You need to read this book if you are a Christian, a Japanophile, or are studying religion/philosophy. Thanks to this book, I want to go to Nagasaki so badly now.

The Bible indicates that shortly after Jesus' birth, King Herod, threatened by the adulation the baby was receiving, ordered the slaughter of male children under the age of two in and around Bethlehem. Warned of this in advance, Joseph and Mary fled to Egypt with Jesus, returning to Palestine only after Herod's death. That's all most Westerners know about Jesus' early childhood, mainly because many Christians tend to reject extra-biblical stories about Jesus, and Westerners in general often deny stories of ancient events that cannot be verified by archeology or science. Ever conscious of that, Arizona author Perry, a self-described "doubting Thomas" who grew up in a faith-rich environment, set out to discover more about Jesus' childhood by following a loosely structured itinerary based on the route the family is believed to have taken. Perry's experiences along the way would by themselves be entertaining enough, but more importantly, they offer significant insight into non-Western thinking about faith, particularly within the Coptic Church in Egypt, where the faithful have no problem believing, for instance, that a baby's footprint found on a stone slab in a sewer in 1984 is that of Jesus. Perry's portrayals of his traveling companions and others he meets on his journey, his retelling of stories about miracles attributed to the baby and his amusing style combine to make a delightful read, even for skeptical Westerners.

Despite the existence of only a few verses in one gospelclaiming that the Holy Family fled to Egypt, Perry decided to retraceJesus' steps on this alleged sojourn. The paucity of biblicalinformation on the topic led Perry to the Gnostic gospels and the oraltradition of the Coptic Church. At first, as he reconstructs and thenfollows the trail, drinking water from healing wells and casting aneye on the bones of saints, it seems as if he simply believes thejourney to have been a real event, but eventually he begins to wonderwhether he is following "a complete fiction." Finally, though, he seeshimself as a believer who "let his heart be his guide," concludingthat it may not matter if the events are factual. Similarly, the mostcompelling part of his book isn't the quest itself but the stories ofthe people he meets along the way: the woman metal worker in what istruly a man's world, or the Coptic priests and monks who help him seein new ways. Bright Lights, Small Villages and the Baby Jesus

Paul Perry's Jesus in Egypt takes the reader on a tour through a mystical land of miracles and myth. Tourists and pilgrims regularly flock to Egypt's sacred sites to gaze upon remains and relics up and down the Nile, which pumps the life blood into the desert country. Perry's trek followed the controversial trail of the Holy Family's short stint in Egypt has they fled Herod's soldiers. Not the standard traveler's trip to the Giza Plateau outside of Cairo or the Valley of the Kings on the Western banks of Luxor, Perry journeyed through darkened alleys, deserted rutted roads and into the heart of the most extreme Islam fundamentals in the world. Even more interesting, Perry, an American, made this voyage not long after September 11, 2001.

Tracing the exact route of Joseph, Mary and Jesus proved problematic. Not all the canonized Gospels give an account of this journey, and Matthew's version is short and vague at best. Even Coptic monks within Egypt can't agree on the authenticity of many of the sites that proclaim to have provided shelter for the family or experienced a miracle performed by the baby Jesus while passing through. Moreover, not much in the way of tangible evidence exists that would even begin to sway the opinion of a western archeologist.

Perry's voyage relies on roughly two thousand years of oral tradition, divine visions, two or three lines from the book of Isaiah and accounts from apocryphal books. Remote villages claim celebrity status related to the handy work of the divine infant such as creating water wells, various healings and toppling pharonic monuments. Slim empirical evidence exists, but a handprint, visions, light spray sightings, remains of the first icon of the Virgin Mary and a stone slab in the so-called world's first Christian church are all parts of this mosaic.

It remains unclear exactly where Jesus and his parents visited on their refuge into Egypt, if they ever entered the country at all. Believer or not, this book reads like a hybrid of a personal spiritual journal, travel guide and Holy Family Trail map, making it a priceless resource for those who seek to follow in the footsteps of Jesus.

This is a Great Book

I really enjoyed this book, Christianity was alive and well for 400 years from 1 AD. Then the Roman Emperor decided that Christianity should be the official religion of Rome, So after feeding christians to the lions, "now I'll accept their religion", But we can't profit from what they believe, so a counsil of bishops, threw out this, modified that, and the emperor was presented with the new cannonized version of the Holy Bible, in about 395 AD. Ok, we got our Bible, so what do we do with all these people who arn't going to accept it as the word of God, since they had their teachings going back 400 years. Well to suppress any opposition to our new bible we will just kill them. And kill them he did, all the way up till the 19th century. But some of them in spite of the opposition hung on to their beliefs, Coptics in Egypt as one, but recent findings are rediscovering what these bishops thought were suppressed. They are being translated and so that now we can read what these bishops didn't want us to know! I really enjoy these authors who have the guts to run with this information, It's about time to come out of the dark ages of Christianity, and enjoy what was hidden for so long, I could shoot off a list of books, but anybody who as came into the light can name them for themselves. Thank You. , and I used to think James Mitchner, and Ernest Hemmingway were exciting !!!
