Cicero (Marcus Tullius, 106–43 BCE), Roman lawyer, orator, politician and philosopher, of whom we know more than of any other Roman, lived through the stirring era which saw the rise, dictatorship, and death of Julius Caesar in a tottering republic. In his political speeches especially and in his correspondence we see the excitement, tension and intrigue of politics and the part he played in the turmoil of the time. Of about 106 speeches, delivered before the Roman people or the Senate if they were political, before jurors if judicial, 58 survive (a few of them incompletely). In the fourteenth century Petrarch and other Italian humanists discovered manuscripts containing more than 900 letters of which more than 800 were written by Cicero and nearly 100 by others to him. These afford a revelation of the man all the more striking because most were not written for publication. Six rhetorical works survive and another in fragments. Philosophical works include seven extant major compositions and a number of others; and some lost. There is also poetry, some original, some as translations from the Greek.

Very good text & commentary

Zetzel provides us with the Latin text of a significant portion of Cicero's partially preserved dialogue on the nature and the forms of government. His (Zetzel's) commentary, by far the bulk of this book, guides any Latin reader through Cicero's text and philosophy without giving away too much in translation. The niceties of the grammar are generally overlooked for comments on Cicero's style and political ideas. This would not make an ideal textbook, but a careful instructor can find much to illustate Cicero's Stoic approach to the ideal state.

In particular, Zetzel provides us with the Dream of Scipio- a very manageable Latin text from a student's perspective, but also loaded with pre-Christian ideas of the afterlife and the proper exercise of virtue. I ordered this book for the latter reason, but found myself drawn into reading the entire selection without regret. For that specialized audience of Latin readers who are interested in the Stoics, Cicero, and Roman political theory, this is a good bet.

About the Author

Jeffrey Bennett, a recipient of the American Institute of Physics Science Communication Award, holds a B.A. in biophysics (UC San Diego) and an M.S. and Ph.D. in astrophysics (University of Colorado). He specializes in science and math education and has taught at every level from preschool through graduate school. Career highlights including serving 2 years as a visiting senior scientist at NASA headquarters, where he developed programs to build stronger links between research and education, and proposing and helping to develop the Voyage scale model solar system on the National Mall (Washington, DC). He is the lead author of textbooks in astronomy, astrobiology, mathematics, and statistics, and of critically acclaimed books for the public including Beyond UFOs (Princeton University Press, 2008/2011), Math for Life (Big Kid Science, 2014), What Is Relativity? (Columbia University Press, 2014), and On Teaching Science (Big Kid Science, 2014). In 2014, his five children’s books (Max Goes to the Space Station, Max Goes to the Moon, Max Goes to Mars, Max Goes to Jupiter, and The Wizard Who Saved the World) became the first books launched to the International Space Station for the Story Time From Space program. Megan Donahue is a professor in the Department of Physics and Astronomy at Michigan State University and a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. Her current research is mainly about using X-ray, UV, infrared, and visible light to study clusters of galaxies: their contents–dark matter, hot gas, galaxies, active galactic nuclei–and what they reveal about the contents of the universe and how galaxies form and evolve. She grew up on a farm in Nebraska and received an S.B. in physics from MIT, where she began her research career as an X-ray astronomer. She has a Ph.D. in astrophysics from the University of Colorado. Her Ph.D. thesis on theory and optical observations of intergalactic and intracluster gas won the 1993 Trumpler Award from the Astronomical Society for the Pacific for an outstanding astrophysics doctoral dissertation in North America. She continued postdoctoral research as a Carnegie Fellow at Carnegie Observatories in Pasadena, California, and later as an STScI Fellow at Space Telescope. Megan was a staff astronomer at the Space Telescope Science Institute until 2003, when she joined the MSU faculty. Megan is married to Mark Voit, and they collaborate on many projects, including this textbook and the raising of their children, Michaela, Sebastian, and Angela. Between the births of Sebastian and Angela, Megan qualified for and ran the Boston Marathon. These days, Megan runs trails, orienteers, and plays piano and bass guitar whenever her children allow it.

 

Nicholas Schneider is an associate professor in the Department of Astrophysical and Planetary Sciences at the University of Colorado and a researcher in the Laboratory for Atmospheric and Space Physics. He received his B.A. in physics and astronomy from Dartmouth College in 1979 and his Ph.D. in planetary science from the University of Arizona in 1988. In 1991, he received the National Science Foundation’s Presidential Young Investigator Award. His research interests include planetary atmospheres and planetary astronomy. One research focus is the odd case of Jupiter’s moon Io. Another is the mystery of Mars’s lost atmosphere, which he hopes to answer by serving as science lead on the Imaging UV Spectrograph on NASA’s MAVEN mission. Nick enjoys teaching at all levels and is active in efforts to improve undergraduate astronomy education. In 2010, he received the Boulder Faculty Assembly’s Teaching Excellence Award. Off the job, Nick enjoys exploring the outdoors with his family and figuring out how things work.

 

Mark Voit is a professor in the Department of Physics and Astronomy and Associate Dean for Undergraduate Studies in the College of Natural Science at Michigan State University. He earned his A.B. in astrophysical sciences at Princeton University and his Ph.D. in astrophysics at the University of Colorado in 1990. He continued his studies at the California Institute of Technology, where he was a research fellow in theoretical astrophysics, and then moved on to Johns Hopkins University as a Hubble Fellow. Before going to Michigan State, Mark worked in the Office of Public Outreach at the Space Telescope, where he developed museum exhibitions about the Hubble Space Telescope and helped design NASA’s award-winning HubbleSite. His research interests range from interstellar processes in our own galaxy to the clustering of galaxies in the early universe, and he is a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. He is married to coauthor Megan Donahue, and cooks terrific meals for her and their three children. NO ACCESS CODE GUARANTEED. Bought this book so I could access MasteringAstronomy because it CLEARLY stated "Access Card Package" but the book came without an access code. Do NOT buy this if you want an access code for MasteringAstronomy.

An absolute TREASURE!

I bought this book in Kauai while visiting my husband's family. It is fabulous! I cannot believe it hasn't become a huge hit with the "new generation" of natural medicine fans! Maybe they just have not discovered it yet. Now since reading Ms. Gutmanis' book, I have been on a quest for all books on Hawaiian healing or medicine. There are no nicer, happier, more unselfish people anywhere in the world than Hawaii. There must be a reason!

Great information on hawaiian medicine and natural herbs. I used some of the herbs discribed in the book awhile ago,and it worked for me. I recommend this book for anybody doing natural healing methods. Mahalo.

This is the best book on batteries that I have found to date. It covers the history, theory, characteristics, application, and charging of most types of batteries including the latest on LIthium-ion batteries. A great resource and the price can't be beat.

I was disappointed by this book as the information was a little light on and not up to date. Very little about LiPo batteries and some of the information dissagrees with most other sources. Most times that I reference the book it doesn't provide an answer.

George F. Carrier (1918–2002) was one of the world’s preeminent applied mathematicians and the T. Jefferson Coolidge Professor of Applied Mathematics at Harvard University. He was honored for his scientific accomplishments by election to the National Academy of Sciences, the National Academy of Engineering, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and the American Philosophical Society. He was the author of numerous papers and books. Max Krook (1913–1985) was Gordon McKay Professor of Applied Mathematics and Professor of Astrophysics at Harvard University. He was widely recognized for his work on stellar and interstellar atmospheres and for his explanations of unusual phenomena in fluids and plasmas. He also was renowned for the invention of several simple models that have given scientists new insights into kinetic theory and statistical mechanics. Carl E. Pearson has a wide variety of experience in both the academic and the professional worlds. He has taught at Harvard, the Technical University of Denmark, and the University of Washington, and he has spent years in industry as well, including work at Arthur D. Readable

I'd never used this book tom teach complex variables in math methods in physics although I've
owned it for about 30 years. This time I made a lecture from it following the derivation of
the series solution of a linear differential equation for a regular singular point and found that
section to be very good. The book is readable from the start and is highly recommendable for
self-study.

nice contour integration chapter

As the other reviewers have said this book is readable. In fact I would say much more readable than Churchill and Brown (or Brown and Churchill depending upon which edition you have). I was amazed to find a chapter on asymptotics and special functions something I think is unusual in a beginning CV text. Carrier and Pearson's PDE book is also well written but unfortunately lacks references.

If you never seen a complex number before parts 2 and 3 of the 5 volume series by Knopp are an excellent starting point:Theory of Functions, Parts I and II (Dover Books on Mathematics) (Pts. 1 & 2)

Don't we all have superhero powers??

the title of this short story caught my attention. Written from the main character's point of view, as he navigates his relationships-giving other's nicknames that relate better to who they are rather than their given name. So clever! And such a study of human nature. Engaging, charming and even thought provoking.

I really loved this plot and the authors writing style. I wish that the author had taken this idea and made it into a full novel instead f a short story since it was really interesting. The only thing that I didn't like about the book was that at the end of some of the chapters the author added lists of other superheroes that had nothing to do with the actual story. I thought was a distraction and took me out of the story a little.

Great book about the legendary racing driver Jim Clark

As a Jim Clark fan from his early days, when he was a rookie in Formula 1 in 1961 (remember Phil Hill winning the championship that year?) I wanted to get this book for some time. However, the prices for hard copies were so astronomical that I couldn't contemplate it, until the Kindle edition came out at $9.99. What a blessing. Great book, it turned out to be.

Modern fans probably don't realize what a master Jim Clark was. Google his name to see his performance at the Indy 500 from 1963 to 1066, in addition to his amazing percentage of wins and pole positions.

About the Author

Claire Jamieson is Dyslexia Coordinator at UCL. She was a member of the 2005 DfES Working Party on Assessment of Dyslexia in Higher Education. She was a founder member of ADSHE and was Chair from 2004 -2006, and is Vice Chair of the National Committee for Standards in Assessment and Training. She has many years of experience as an assessor and tutor of dyslexic students.

Ellen Morgan worked as a Dyslexia Coordinator in Higher Education for 18 years; she is currently a Specialist Dyslexia Tutor at The City University, London, and has published widely in the field of adult dyslexia.
