Bringing contemporary critical theory to bear on Beowulf, the author explores the literary originality of a poem often treated as oral and traditional. He grounds his work in three axioms about Beowulf. First, the poem cannot be dated with certainty and must be considered a portrait of an imaginary society. Second, the epic, a long narrative poem of the heroic age, is not necessarily a traditional genre. And third, there is no reason to believe that Beowulf was anything more than a fictitious hero invented by the poet.

The first half of the book examines the literary treatment of such concepts as space and time, history and transcendence , and orality and literacy, in Beowulf and other Old English poems. The author’s method here is mostly phenomenological—the sort of intellectual and religious history exemplified by Paul Ricoeur. The second half is dominated by psychoanalysis, beginning with the psychoanalytic anthropology of Victor Turner and Ren� Girard. Then Freud leads the author to consider questions of individual consciousness, creativity, and reader response. The book concludes by probing the creative autonomy of the Beowulf poet as well as of the reader, and their mutual interest in the hero’s freedom beyond his fate.

Not for beginners

The description for this book is a bit vague. It says, "Basic knowledge of Gradle or any other build tool is essential." What this seems to mean is that this book is not for Gradle beginners. It isn't. Much of the time, it is very much a hand-holding guide, but then it will suddenly make glancing references to topic that have not even been hinted at by the book.

The trouble is that there doesn't seem to be any kind of learning resource anywhere for the beginner. Gradle's online documentation is even worse (much worse) than this book at suddenly launching into advanced side topics.

There is good material in this book; I say that as someone who is still pretty new to Gradle. I wonder if my perception will change after I become more of an expert. In that case, maybe the content will seem too basic. For now, I'm learning things, but I still have frequent cases when I wonder what the heck the book is talking about. So I have to put those topics aside and assume I'll learn about them later. This is not the most pleasant or effective way to learn something.

A solid book on Gradle

I have been working with Gradle for about a year now, so I have some experience. I bought this book partly as a reference and partly as way to learn the what I don't know about Gradle. I have found this book to be a very good reference and I definitely appreciated the background information on Groovy. I will be recommending that we purchase this book for our team's library.

Bought this book to gain in-depth knowledge on Gradle. This book has great method of teaching Groovy programming language. You can build complete projects, test them yourself just by following the book. The book also talks about migrating and integrating strategies which is highly useful. You can also learn to make simple android apps which you can test using Gradle. Overall this book is very good if you want to learn Gradle entirely. Must Read.

He was formerly a cellular network radio frequency systems engineer specializing on modeling, simulating, optimizing, and testing various digital communication systems. Dr. Liu received his PhD in Electrical Engineering at New Jersey Institute of Technology, USA.

Sometimes Difficult to Understand

This textbook can be frustrating at times, often having to do with organization, particularly in the sections reviewing statistical concepts. Terms are sometimes used before they are actually introduced. Examples, too, are often less than illuminating, and at times are simply not well-suited to the term in question, but better suited to a different term also under discussion. Concepts are not introduced in an orderly way and it often takes several readings of the text to understand what ideas the authors are trying to convey. The concepts themselves are not difficult, but sometimes the text reads as an exercise in obfuscation. The authors' use of language is comfortable, and this makes it more difficult to understand why the concepts are not presented clearly.
