Not just a pattern book, but an amazing guide to knitting your new favorite sweater!

I can't say enough good things about this book. Amy Herzog is one of my favorite knitting voices. I enjoy her non-judgmental word choices and straightforward message: we are all beautiful.

She opens with a chapter on identifying your personal style. Proposing no fewer than eight categories, complete with descriptions of fiber, fabric, and color, she gives five exercises to help label your tastes.

This is important because if we articulate what we like to wear, we are less likely to choose to knit something that attracts us for other reasons (for instance, the setting it's worn in).

Chapter Two is a crash course in sweater choice and customization which will guide us through eight meta-patterns, each with three samples worked up in different styles and yarn weights.

Each meta-pattern is written for twelve sizes from 30" to 54" bust. The patterns are brilliantly laid out in chart form, resulting in a surprising clarity, given that there are mix-and-match instructions for three radically different sweaters on the same page. It's like a cross between a knitting book and a Choose-Your-Own-Adventure Novel.

I don't love all the designs, but I can easily make them my own using the worksheet at the end of the pattern. (Sort of a Mad-Libs vibe, with blanks for the stitch counts and stitch patterns.) Knitters can even change the increase and decrease rates following Amy's instructions. It's liberating, and the possibilities are endless.

I highly recommend this book for knitters who want to be able to customize their sweaters for fit or for style. Also for those who'd like their knitting to fit better (some important information about measuring gauge in Chapter Two), those who want to choose a sweater that flatters their body type, those who are hesitant to knit a sweater in pieces or have trouble with seaming, and those who just plain like Amy Herzog patterns.

Good basics with plenty of scope for customization

I like this book for its emphasis on different body types, and the general wearability of most of the garments included. It's often a challenge to imagine a specific garment seen on a willowy model as it might look on a curvier, or smaller, or more broad-shouldered, or even older woman, and given the effort involved in knitting garments, some idea is always helpful. The variety of models in this text is terrific, and I can feel I might be making an informed choice when I choose a pattern to knit.

Waste of money

I am embarrassed both for the author and the publisher of this book. This book has over 100 typographical errors (I lost count), including mistakes that a basic spell-check function would catch. Sentences missing words, spelling errors, grammatical mistakes - you name it, this book has it.
Regarding the content, it rambles and makes no sense. The author/publisher uses a lot of fonts and logos, but I didn't see one original thought. Anyone with any marketing experience will find that this book is a waste of money.

Great introduction to branding

Another reviewer complained about typos (I can't agree based on my edition). My 2 cents that person missed the point. As someone who has been around publishing I can say that all books have typos (like all software has bugs). The point is the content.

If you have been a branding-enabled marketing professional for years it is possible that you should try a more technical book. But if you need to get up to speed quickly, refresh your perspective for a new environment or find a way to simply think different, this book is the ticket.

The author comes at his topic with a fast paced hard hitting style that gets both fact and perspective out where you can think about it and absorb it without wasting any time. Experience is tough to get in better then real-time, but this book comes close. I found the book more then worthwhile and have suggested it to many, even to friends who are experienced marketing professionals.

A very fascinating book about brand

The author, Idris Mootee, a former Mckinsey consultant turned marketing expert has distilled his enormous practical knowledge about the theory and practice of brand management into this smart but small volume. The book is packed with information and good ideas-so many, in fact, that it is virtually an encyclopedia of brand marketing dos and don'ts. Most of the material is presented as power point slides format. An excellent resource for marketing and brand executives.

Charles R. Lister is a visiting fellow at the Brookings Institution's Doha Center. He was formerly head of the Middle East and North Africa section at IHS Jane's Terrorism and Insurgency Centre.

Straightforward and good history and explanation of ISIS / the Islamic State

I ordered this based on Charles Lister's reputation, as well as the fact that Ahmed Rashid wrote the foreword. Lister has studied the Middle East for both Janes and Brookings. When the book arrived I was surprised to realize how short it is. I'm actually glad it didn't turn out to be a thick academic tome. It's very readable, and I finished this in two evenings. I feel like I now have a solid understanding of where ISIS came from and what the dynamics are that have made them so successful in their deplorable pursuits and actions.

Brilliantly researched and well written

Charles Lister's book is a an absolute must read for anyone seriously studying the ISIL dilemma. In fact, it has led me to a topic for my thesis. Mr. Lister is a renowned expert on the subject, so you can't go wrong by reading this. What is the most important thing I took out of this book? ISIL has two faces- one for the public, and another that is very close hold- that of a tightly ran bureaucracy led at the highest levels by Saddam Hussein's former officers. Charles' description of the intelligence driven ops behind the fall of Mosul, as well as the tactics used by ISIL in Jalula opened my eyes to the true nature of this threat. Brilliantly researched and well written. Thank you Mr. Lister.

More policy recommendations than a history...but interesting for that

This book is short enough at 85 Kindle pages to be considered a pamphlet or monograph and yet it clearly outlines the genesis and development of ISIS in Iraq and Syria. It focuses more intensely on ISIS strengths and weaknesses rather than ideology. Rather than detail accounts of successes in the field or Western attempts to combat ISIS, it assumes a conversant and sympathetic Western audience. He has a more in-depth treatment due to be published in the U.K. in November this year (Hurst) and the U.S. in 2016 (Oxford Univ Press), called THE SYRIAN JIHAD: AL-Qaeda, the Islamic State and the Evolution of an Insurgency. Lister is a Visiting Fellow at the Brookings Doha Center in Qatar, Senior Consultant at The Shaikh Group, and formerly head of MENA at IHS Jane’s Terrorism & Insurgency Centre in London.

While many radical insurgents originated in Saudi Arabia, Lister makes clear that is began originally as opposition to the Saudi monarchy, therefore correcting what might be a misapprehension among observers: since many radicals issued from Saudi, one might conclude that the country fostered them, when in fact, they caused them. The fact remains that the Saudi government did little to curb radical ideologies originating on their soil, and did, in fact, make much of its opposition to the Shia sect’s power and control, as well as sponsoring or condoning the adoption of the variant of Wahhabism that is the ISIS creed.

Lister outlines the way ISIS has made itself financially strong: oil revenues from siphoned or takeover wells, levies on the transportation of goods within affected countries, taxes in areas it controls, outright theft, kidnap-for-ransom, extortion and protection rackets, and the sale of antiquities, among other things. It has a strict bureaucratic hierarchy which gives it some reach into the organizations it claims. It has gathered to itself disaffected and trained military men from throughout the Islamic world, has released from prison captured radicals and utilized their talents, and uses social media, including English-language outlets, effectively.

ISIS is not currently waging a war against the West. This makes it essentially different from Al Qaeda. ISIS is intent upon establishing a trans-national caliphate of their particular brand of Islam, which has, in effect, caused such sectarian strife in affected countries that ISIS may be able to capitalize in the vacuum of governance. This broad-yet-narrow outlook may be an exploitable weakness: their violence against Muslims who do not adhere to their stated tenets promotes violence against their movement, and governments accustomed to operating within state boundaries will oppose any incursion on their soils. The civilians on the ground may well oppose a trans-national caliphate based on Wahhabism but have fewer options available to them.

Lister’s work already seems a little out of date, for just yesterday we heard that U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry, in talks with Russia and Turkey, stated a willingness to consider Assad remaining in power, while Lister defends the position taken by the U.S. last year: that Assad must go. But you will see in this analysis suggestions for Western strategy or policy in combating the ISIS scourge, with an emphasis on Western support of local actors rather than intervention. The trouble with writing about trouble spots is that things change so quickly and sometimes decisively. However, the bulk of this short book is detailed enough on actors and attitudes to be useful. What was your inspiration for After the Snow?
Well, apart from the unbelievably cold winter during which I was writing―in an unheated house, chopping logs, and digging my car out of the snow; I think much of the inspiration for the settings in After the Snow came from my various travels.

In my twenties I worked as a timber buyer in the Caucasus Mountains of southern Russia, and that work led to travels in Eastern Europe and Armenia. As soon as I step off the plane in those places it smells like home.

It may sound strange to say when After the Snow is set in Wales, but really the practical dilemmas in the book come directly from places I've been, people I've lived with, and the hardships I've seen endured with grace and capability. I was in Russia not long after the Soviet Union collapsed and I've seen society in freefall. Without realizing it at the time, I think those experiences led me to dive into After the Snow with real passion.

What would western civilization look like with a few tumbles under its belt? What would happen if the things we took for granted disappeared? I wanted to write a gripping story about that scenario, but hardly felt that I was straying into fantasy in the detail.

What do you want readers to most remember about After the Snow?
We all have the capacity to survive, but in what manner? What do we turn to in those times of trouble? Those are the questions I would like people to contemplate after reading After the Snow.

How did Willo's unique voice come to you?
Willo's voice appeared in those crucial first few paragraphs. After that it just grew along with his world and the terrible situations that arise. I think his voice is in all of us. We don't understand, we try to make good―maybe we find ourselves.

How did you stay warm while writing this novel?
I banked up the fire―and was warmed by hopes of spring.

S.D. Crockett has built a barren and cold world with an engaging and distinct voice.

Polar conditions have engulfed the earth. Many have died, but there are those that have learned to survive. Willo's family lives off of the grid in a cabin up in the mountains. There, they hunt and survive on the most basic of levels. Willo is a master trapper but has an odd quirk. He has a dog's skull woven into his hat. He believes the spirit of the dog fills him and speaks to him.

When Willo comes home one day after a day of trapping, he is shocked to see his family gone. The hearth is cold and he isn't sure where they would have gone. He heard yelling earlier while out, but he didn't think anything of it. Determined to find them, he stocks his sled with the minimum he will need to survive and sets out on a journey to his sister's place. Maybe her husband will know where his family has gone.

On his journey though, a winter storm sets in. Willo sees a ramshackle building nearby and heads to it, hoping for shelter. But who answers are a young girl and her brother. They beg Willo for food and help, but he is determined to find his family and leaves them. Later, when Willo has created a shelter for himself in the carcass of an airplane, he has second thoughts. He travels back to help them, but will they inhibit his goal to find his family?

After The Snow is a page-turning chilling adventure! S.D. Crockett has built a barren and cold world with an engaging and distinct voice. Willo is such a diverse character; I never could guess what he was going to do next. From one adventure to the next, I was rooting for him and his family. From new friendships to inconsolable loss, After the Snow is a must-read for any dystopian lover!

When Dialect works

Before I start with my thoughts on After the Snow, there's a pretty big potential annoyance that I have to mention. This book is written in dialect/slang - so if you're a grammar Nazi, or have trouble `giving voice' to this style of dialogue be aware that you might want to try a sample before buying. Having said that, this is something that I normally find more irritating than fingernails down a blackboard, but it wasn't an issue for me in After the Snow and personally I wouldn't have found the main character quite as fascinating if it had been written without the dialect/slang.

The world has become a place of ice, snow and blizzards, and humanity is scratching out a living on the very edges. The government has rounded up the remnants of society and put them to work for the greater good, trying to maintain the basics of infrastructure whilst throwing together `settlements'. Willo and his family are stragglers, living off the grid in the mountains, trying to survive, but at least they are together. Until one day Willo returns to the farmhouse to find everyone gone.

Determined to find his family, Willo encounters a young girl named Mary, on the edge of starvation and hypothermia in an abandoned farmhouse. Despite his need to press on and find his family, after some inner turmoil, Willo decides to try and help her return to the settlements.

The storyline of After the Snow is classic post-apocalyptic/dystopic YA - a strong, determined main character with an unlikely partner (I won't say love interest as it definitely doesn't start out as that kind of relationship) on a journey across a devastated country.

Where After the Snow was a different experience for me was definitely Willo. At 15 years old, he seems at times younger than his years, and at others much older and wiser - an imaginable reflection of growing up in a world so very different to ours today. Mentally tough and determined, pushing himself through physical exertion, is brave enough to face whatever comes along without any unnecessary dramatics and has a deep sense of responsibility and caring for the people closest to him. I found him intriguing, endearing and I couldn't help but hope for the best for him all the way through until the end.

The world-building is excellent, and the writing is bleak, intense and free-flowing even during periods where the action isn't exactly rolling at breakneck speed and there is a perfect amount of explanation of the environmental, political and socio-economic fallout of the new ice-age.

Ending with heart-stopping action and Willo realising some important things about himself, the world around him and his place in it, I highly recommend After the Snow to anyone!

Hunger Games in a Cold Climate

Our fifteen year old hero, Willo, lives in a dystopea that might be similar to the way most people lived during those dark years of European history. Scrabbling to survive, scraping a meager existence off of an unwilling land, with families forming their own little tribes united against all outsiders...and all outsiders posing a threat. Government is shadowy and threatening.

The story takes place in Wales, some time after a new ice age has decimated the population and turned cities into a horror show where survival of the fittest has devolved into survival of the most brutal. Religion has been reduced to totem worship (Willo wears a dog's skull to help him as a hunter), and goodness is pretty scarce on the ground. The harsh realities of life turn survivors into scavengers...upon the environment and one another.

Willo's family are "scragglers," who escaped from the city and its oppressive government and lawlessness to take their chances in a frozen and inhospitable wilderness. Apparently the oppressive government frowns on this and one day Willo comes home from tending his animal traps and find them gone. No explanation is offered and Willo doesn't seem all that curious. They could have been "disappeared" by the government, rounded up by those who trade in human flesh, who knows. Willo consults his totem...the dog in his head... and heads into the city where he hopes to find some alternative to the endless emptiness and loneliness of life in the wild.

Bad idea.

When civilization fell apart, it fell apart so completely that no vestiges were left. Even memories of how things were have been eradicated. No one is rebuilding, no one is combing the libraries for books on how to use solar power to warm things up, develop cold resistant crops, or remove an appendix. Humanity just scavenges whatever is handy for immediate needs, for food and shelter and clothing. We don't see many signs of the world that came before. There must be millions of vehicles rusting away on every street, but only the government makes use of them. Instead of developing alternate fuel sources, the citizenry just lug their bundles on their backs. Virtually none of our vast technology is available or of interest to the average survivor.

Compared to the ease with which books like the "Hunger Games" series allow us to suspend belief, After the Snow has several toe stubbing moments where we just shake our heads and say "No way." And the dialect spoken by Willo -- a kind of Dystopian Futuristic Welsh-Influenced English -- wears thin after a while. After all, translators of Anna Karenina didn't feel it necessary to make Vronsky and Anna sound like Boris and Natasha. Willo's colorful jargon is more annoying than illuminating, and a little would have been sufficient. After a while I was telling that dog in his head to sic him.

Still, the book deserves four stars. For young readers who may not be so analytical, it provides a very different experience from the usual end of the world as we knew it epic. It's challenging to read, somewhat thought-provoking, and provides an important glimmer of hope. Who wants kids thinking the future is hopeless? Let them believe we are not destroying it faster than we can fix it.

For what it's worth, Far North by Marcel Theroux is a much better book, his frozen dystopia is more realistic and interesting, his villians more believable, and his big, lumbering heroine -- whose cloddish appearance belies a very find mind -- is one of the best and most original characters in young adult fiction. Far North is classified YA, but has enough substance to appeal to adults.

Two of Abelard's Most important Works.

Ethical Writings: 'Ethics' and 'Dialogue Between a Philosopher, a Jew and a Christian' by Peter Abelard, Translated by Paul Vincent Spade, Introduced by Marilyn McCord Adams.

Most major theologeans have written on ethics, but Abelard's works are more important to his corpus of work than with most others. The simple reason is that so few of his works are available to us in English, and many that are were left incomplete by Abelard. The more complex reason is that Abelard's signature doctrine of atonement, which he posed as an alternative to the equally famous doctrine by Anselm of Canterbury, is based primarily on the nature of virtue ethics. What makes it even more modern sounding is that it is based on a theory of philosophical psychology and intention which is as modern as tomoorrow.

Both works in this volume were left incomplete by Abelard, but the volume contains all we have. The heart of Abelard's theory of intention in 'Ethics' is that sin is based on intention, not on the act, or even on the dispostion to do the act. An inference he makes from this is that the Roman soldiers who crucified Jesus were not acting sinfully by that act. They were acting lawfully. One wonders what Abelard would have thought of the thousands of Nazis who professed that they were 'just following orders' before WW II, in persecuting the Jews and others. But this position is a lynchpin to Abelard's doctrine of atonement, whereby one is changed by the love of God to intend to do his will.

In his 'Dialogue', the author, Abelard does not play the Philosopher. Rather, he plays the mediator in the conversation about ethics. It should be no surprise that the Christian comes out of the dialogue with the advantage. Unfortunately for those who are fond of Plato's dialogues, Abelard is far more rigid and less conversational. Most of the speeches are very long, and there is relatively little drama or strong words, as there are in Hume's Dialogues Concerning Natural Religion.

This appears to be the least expensive option for purchasing these two works on Amazon. It is far less expensive than those available from the expert on Abelard's ethics, David Luscombe. Therefore, I consider this a very good choice (although I have not read Dr. Luscombe's introduction and translation).

If one gets nothing else out of reading Abelard, one should appreciate the sophistication of his psychology and the extent to which he is different from the Roman church to which Martin Luther and the other Reformers objected. Luther and Abelard shared the same 'nominalist' philosophical outlook, so one may be surprised at both their similarities and differences.

This is a revelation of how sophisticated was Medieval thinking.

Abelard's great ethics translated carefully: super!

Abelard's ideas concerning the significance of the intention of an act rather than the consequences caused by it are brilliant. I share his vision - I always have - and am amazed to find such an early thinker with such authentic and extreme ethical ideas, which seem to be considered radical even nowadays. Also, nothing but credit for professor Spade's translation. Not being a native English speaker myself, I may have a different view on these matters, but I dare say the translation is clear, consistent and accessible. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in ethics.
