Practical Stone Masonry, by Peter Hill, John David

Practical Stone Masonry is the first major book in nearly seventy years on the craft of the stonemason. Today the work of the stonemason is almost exclusively confined to the repair of historic buildings, requiring a full working knowledge of the detailed traditional craft practices relating to repairs. This book addresses that need. It covers the basic methods of working stone, the making of specialized tools, and, for the first time, a full analysis of the procedures for setting-out for repairs. A broad description of the nature and problems of stone also includes guidance on selection. In addition, the authors look at the causes of decay in stone and outline methods for repair of both stone and mortar. "Practical Stone Masonry" contains essential advice for working masons and apprentices, and all those engaged in planning and supervising such works. It includes: the basic methods of working stone; how to make specialized tools; the procedures for setting-out for repairs explained; and, the nature and problems of stone plus a guide to selection.

Stone masonry essentials
By flaxman
Practical Stone Masonry by P. R. Hill and J. C. E. David is resource for those engaged in the care of stone structures. More than that this book covers a host of topics of value to everyone who appreciates the work of stone masons throughout the ages, and want to understand the materials and methods of the trade. The origins of stone, how it weathers and decays, compatibility of different stone types and, selecting stone for repairs are covered in chapter three. In chapter five the geometry of laying out various types arches including skewed arches, and also the lay out of raking sections is presented in detail, much as it was done in the builders manuals published in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. Other chapters cover methods of working stone, setting and fixing stone in place, cleaning and, supervision and specificatons. Two glossaries and a bibliography provide more useful information.

Excellent reference work
By C. Ray Jones
This book gives detailed information on how to shape stone. There is an extensive amount of information on the practical aspects of marking and laying out of stone so that shapes may be cut. It gives some information about the use of mortar and how it affects the overall use of stone. There are detailed descriptions of the tools necessary to shape stone and the way these tools are used. This book will see a lot of use when marking stone for cutting and in the design phase of any project. An excellent work for the serious worker.

Breadth, but not Depth
By No Fat Chicks
Masonry is a huge and varied topic, and the novel thing about this book is that the authors have managed to touch on almost every subject you can think of. There are chapters on geology, setting out, cutting in, tools, quarrying, mortar, and even lots of boring yet practical advice about how to move rocks around, clean them, and even supervision and training. But, even better, they describe traditional methods from a modern perspective, giving you the best of both worlds: for instance, sections about power tools and CAD software, as well as hammers and chisels.

But with only a couple hundred pages to devote to an entire industry spanning thousands of years, the book feels like a very broad overview, without much depth to each subject. This of course is only natural, as entire multi-volume works could be devoted to what this book might devote only a single paragraph (or even sentence) to. Consequently, the most important parts of this book are the glossary and bibliography for further reading, which is not just present (an assumption that cannot be made of masonry books), but is actually decent (though mostly British, as are apparently the authors).

Something to keep in mind is that the majority of the book (2 whole chapters that comprise nearly half of the whole) is about setting out; i.e. the architecture and design of structures like arches, vaults, and other complex shapes on paper. If you are building something simple, like a stone wall, you will probably have little use for this, however the other half has plenty of good information. Most of it is in the context of repairing existing structures, and not from building from scratch, but that doesn't make it any less applicable.

There will undoubtedly be chapters you skim, but others that you read over and over, wishing there was more of. For instance, chapters on 'safety' and 'project management' probably appeal to professional management types, whereas 'tools' and 'working stone' are much more applicable to the poor part-time hobbyist (me) pounding on rocks over the weekend. Personally, the chapter on actually setting up a banker shop and lifting stone is some of most practical and useful advice any book on stone has ever had.

Overall, this covers nearly everything, albeit very brief. But that in itself is invaluable, as it has become my 'starting off' book to learn what it is I actually need to learn, and then to investigate further.

Excellent Firewood
By Icy Y.
Is there a better way to use this book than to burn it? No.

I had the misfortune of using this book for managerial accounting, quite possibly one of the most boring and over-complicated classes in the world. Over-complicate: as in the material is actually easy but they must write 1000 pages on it so that students will never understand it.

In any event, people still use this book for some reason. When I tried to sell it around 2 years later, the book depreciated to $1 from $200 because I guess the 14th edition came out. Either that or this book was found to cause herpes. It's ironic that this book is an accounting failure of its own and the publishers can't even find a way to prevent the book from depreciating 19900%. Nonetheless, since it's now worth $1, it would be of more value to use this as firewood.

Horrible!
By Amazon Customer
This textbook is, without a doubt, the worst textbook I have ever purchased. It takes a relatively easy subject and makes it entirely unintelligible. I only used it a couple of times as a reference, and felt that I came away from it with less of an understanding of the subject than I had when I picked up the book. Avoid this textbook at all costs!

One of the worst textbooks that I have read.
By CMC81
This textbook was terrible. Luckily, I have taken Managerial accounting in the past so I did not have to rely on this author's explanations of the material. The concepts are not explained well in this book and the problems are worded in such a way that you could argue that there are multiple correct answers. Avoid.

Computer Networks and Systems: Queueing Theory and Performance Evaluation, by Thomas G. Robertazzi

Intended for a first course in performance evaluation, this is a self-contained treatment covering all aspects of queuing theory. It starts by introducing readers to the terminology and usefulness of queueing theory and continues by considering Markovian queues in equilibrium, Littles law, reversibility, transient analysis, and computation, plus the M/G/1 queuing system. It then moves on to cover networks of queues, and concludes with techniques for numerical solutions, a discussion of the PANACEA technique, discrete time queueing systems and simulation, and stochastic Petri networks. The whole is backed by case studies of distributed queueing networks arising in industrial applications. This third edition includes a new chapter on self-similar traffic, many new problems, and solutions for many exercises.

Great book on Queuing theory
By Amitabha Ghosh
I'm a graduate student in electrical engineering and queuing theory is one of the subjects i need to be familiar about. I did a couple of courses on queuing theory, mostly by following the instructor's notes, but this book helped me to clear many of my concepts that either i overlooked before or never thought about it.

In particular, the section where it talks about algebraic topological interpretation of product form solutions of queuing networks is great, and so is the treatment on M/G/1 queues. It also proves why the product form solution works and what should be the structure of the queuing in order for it to work! The examples and case studies are very insightful. Chapter 6 on discrete time queuing systems is very well written with a comparison to its continuous time analog.

Overall, I think it's a great book. Would recommend to anybody that wants to study deeper.

Review

"This Second Edition of Jane Kroger’s Identity Development: Adolescence through Adulthood is a jewel in the publications pertaining to identity. In one book five theoretical/empirical frameworks of identity are skillfully intertwined with Erikson’s seminal work pertaining to the 'meaningful, purposeful, directed' self. The search for one’s identity with its continuities and change over the lifespan are documented with intriguing issues of transition and narrative that affords any reader the recognition of self. For those seeking empirical questions to investigate this book stands on the cutting edge providing essential directions that will greatly expand our understanding of identity development and its refinement. This volume is an essential addition to the library of any scholar or student interested in the field of identity."

(Sally L. Archer 2006-02-01)

"This book is the most thorough examination of identity formation across youth and adulthood that has ever been written.Like the great architect of identity, the late Erik H. Erikson, Jane Kroger has written a book on human development and identity that stands as a testimony to the power of the self and identity formation in understanding human beings, their anticipations, goals and aspirations, and the nature of meaningfulness to life. Through a summary of research, narratives and discourses on identity formation, Kroger has painted a fascinating and informative portrait of the landscape of identity formation across the life-span." (Gerald Adams 2006-02-01)

"This is the one book that I recommend as authoritative on life-span identity development. Written in a lively style with examples both numerous and apt, it helps practitioners and social planners to become current with research findings, and it provides researchers with both the necessary background and intriguing new ideas to advance their work. University instructors will find it invaluable as a text for a seminar in identity development as well as a highly useful supplement for courses in life-span development (adolescence through late adulthood) and personality theory. Kroger has written that rare book that is highly informative, useful, and a pleasure to read." (James E. Marcia 2006-02-01)

"Jane Kroger's Identity Development: Adolescence through Adulthood , Second Edition, provides a concise and engaging summary of the rapidly-expanding theory and research on identity development. The volume is solidly grounded in Erikson's work, yet expands to include psychological, sociological, historical, and cultural perspectives. The book is written in a very accessible way - useful to those seeking an introduction to the field as well as to established researchers who want to look beyond the boundaries of their own work. The text is richly illustrated by quotes from a wide range of adolescents and adults going about their daily lives. Especially valuable are Kroger's treatment of a number of special identity challenges faced by sub-groups and her focus throughout the book on the many ways in relationships are thoroughly interwoven with the process of identity development." (Harold D. Grotevant, Ph.D. 2006-02-23)

Positive Review
By Kristia Callaway
In Identity Development: Adolescence through Adulthood, Kroger (2000) focuses on the early, middle, and late periods of both adolescence and adulthood. She not only provides research which is applicable to Eriksons psychosocial theory of development, but also offers her own view points in regards to this premise. Furthermore, Kroger writes of the necessity for additional studies concerning Eriksons psychosocial point of view of each of the phases of life addressed.
To begin, this book is immediately intriguing due to its use of Eriksons psychosocial theory. Of all the developmental theories, this must be the one which includes the most comprehensive look at development throughout the lifespan. By using challenges that are faced during particular phases of development, Erikson specifically outlines developmental tasks that must be completed as well as those which must be avoided.
Kroger separates the text into three parts, devoting Part I to the discussion of perceptions of the wholism of identity. Erikson is given credit for the original idea of such wholistic identity perspectives. His theory encompasses the suggestion that the attainment of an identity is a mission that must be fulfilled during adolescence in order to pursue and complete additional tasks in adulthood. In addition to Eriksons theory, Kroger discusses other frameworks in which the study of identity may be approached.
In Part II, Kroger discusses adolescence. This part is divided into segments pertaining to early adolescence, middle adolescence, and late adolescence. She begins each segment by discussing the biological, psychological, and societal influences that accompany the three stages of adolescence. Next, she discusses developmental tasks that are faced during adolescence and the way in which these tasks affect identity development. Some of these specific developmental tasks are puberty, sexuality, vocation decisions, and the development of values. Finally, at the end of each segment, Kroger discusses specific contexts that affect identity development. Each context is viewed in relation to the stage of adolescence being studied. Specific contexts include family, friendships and peer groups, and educational and work settings.
The final part of the text is set up quite similar to Part II. However, in Part III, Kroger discusses early adulthood, middle adulthood, and late adulthood. Biological, psychological, and societal influences pertaining to each stage of adulthood are discussed at the beginning of each segment. Developmental tasks faced during the three stages of adulthood are also discussed, including identity, intimacy, generativity, and integrity. Finally, Kroger discusses specific contexts affecting the development of identity during adulthood. These contexts include the family and social network, the career, and association with ones community.
The way in which Kroger designs the framework for her text is logical and allows for easy comprehension. By designing Part II and Part III to be so similar, one is able to read the text in an orderly fashion that allows for easier understanding. At the end of both of these parts, Kroger discusses, in depth, selected issues that may have an effect on identity development during adolescence and/or adulthood. Some of these specific issues include adoption, ethnicity, the loss of an intimate relationship, and infertility. This is certainly the most interesting part of the text. While reading this section, one is simply able to see how specific issues (even as tiny as they may appear) can have a profound effect on identity development.
According to Kroger (2000), the main point of Identity Development: Adolescence through Adulthood is to examine how my biology, psychology, and society interact to produce that subjective sense of the person who is genuinely me as well as how I can meaningfully express who I am in social contexts (p. 7). She presents answers to these questions given by individuals in each stage of development discussed. This not only adds character to the text, but also aids in the understanding of how Eriksons stages apply to the development of identity.
One might note that the responses to the afore-mentioned questions change significantly during each stage of development. This illustrates the development of identity in relation to specific tasks which are being faced during that stage. Finally, this understanding may aid in the realization that each task is dependent upon the completion of another. In other words, much like development itself, Krogers text consists of parts that build upon one another to make a single completion.

The book arrived quickly, but was more used than I had expected from the description. There is some bending in the cover and quite a large amount of highlighting throughout the book.
