As it stands now my only advice is to stay away from this book, because you might be tempted to buy it anyway (at least I was).'

Clear and understandable, but some bugs

I found this book very useful as a reference while writing a small computer algebra system. It's a definate must-have for all the hordes of people out there who are rewriting subsets of Maple, Mathematica, etc. The explanation of the theory is relatively clear and helpful so that a not-so-theory-inclined person (such as myself) can understand the material. The cost of such clarity is a loss of some conciseness so someone who lives and breathes abstract algebra may desire a more esoteric book (like Winkler's). The biggest flaw of the book are the poorly debugged algorithms. Almost every algorithm presented in the book has some sort of minor flaw with serious reprecussions on correctness. This results in much frustration if you're actually trying to implement the algorithms.

an excellent treatment

We used this book in an advanced undergraduate/early graduate class in computer algebra. The book provides a concise and rigorous, but very readable introduction to computational algebra theory, with algorithms written in pseudo code.
Assuming proficiency in programming, as further pre-requisite I would suggest an undergraduate course in abstract algebra (or equivalent mathematical maturity) for maximum benefit.
An excellent collection of algorithms, proofs, and advanced introductory material, written in a (comparatively) breezy style.

About the Author
Dr. Stephen Burd is an Associate Professor at the University of New Mexico, where he has been teaching courses in management information systems, networks, databases, and hardware/software since 1984. He received his B.B.A. and M.B.A. from the University of Baltimore and his Ph.D. from Purdue University. John Satzinger is a Professor in the Computer Information Systems department at Missouri State University. With teaching and research experience at leading CIS and MIS university programs since 1991, Dr. Satzinger provides a strong managerial focus and powerful vision for this text. His interests and specialties include systems analysis and design, graphical user interface design, object-oriented development, and database and client-server development. He earned his MBA from Cal Poly University and his Ph.D. from the Claremont Graduate University. Robert Jackson is a retired member of the faculty of the Information Systems Department at Brigham Young University. He has researched, published, and taught in the areas of object-oriented systems development, e-commerce, Web systems, project management, and information systems education. Bringing a wealth of real-world business experience and technical expertise to this book, Dr. Jackson is currently self-employed as a principal in several new e-commerce ventures, where he practices firsthand the analysis, design, and business principles presented in the Seventh Edition. He received his Ph.D. in Computer Science from Brigham Young University.

A crummy book

I agreed to teach Systems Analysis and accepted this text as it was the one already selected when I arrived on campus. Later I was told by the person who selected this text, "Your problem is that you believe what you read. I choose books to teach against." In other words, the person who originally selected this book thought that it was full of bunk and planned to use it as a foil for his wit and wisdom. Personally, I see no reason to force students to buy a book that you disagree with. Unfortunately, his assessment that the book is full of bunk is largely correct. If the book was mearly full of drivel it would be a better book than it is. Alas, it also overly long and confuses students. I would not recommend using this book. I will certainly never use it again.

Packed with disjointed and repetitive information!

If you want to make the subject of Systems Analysis and Design appear to be more daunting than it really is, then read this book! There is no doubt that the authors know their subject, but they seem to have no idea of how to clearly explain the concepts. The real issue appears to be a "disconnection" between the author's knowledge and how that translates into a clear explanation for somebody who is new to this subject.

To explain this better, many concepts are introduced in early chapters, and then again in more detail in later chapters. Sounds logical right? Well, sometimes. What you find here is that you quickly become overwhelmed with briefly introduced concepts, acronyms, descriptions, foot-notes, side-notes, best practice notes, headings, subheadings, dot-points, highlighted-text, diagrams and tables (that often only make sense in subsequent pages), and most of all: repetition. Lots of repetition... Only to read about it all over again in later chapters.

They really have just thrown as much information into the book as they could, but with little thought put into making the subject flow (and make sense). Some concepts like the IE SDLC are explained in detail in chapter 2, but then you discover a LOT more information about IE in chapter 6! It's almost like the authors split the subjects between them and threw the book together without bothering to collaborate. Consequently the book could be half the size.

Given that the subject matter focuses heavily on "flow", I'm completely underwhelmed by the author's ability to introduce flow in their written explanations!

I'm using it with my course at the moment (not through choice), and I am finding myself using Google all the time now to supplement my understanding of the concepts in the book.

Don't buy it (unless you really have to).

For Systems Analysis of Object Oriented and Component-Based

I have worked as a systems analysis and project manager for over 26 years with the last 15 working with object oriented techniques and component-based systems. When asked by systems engineers which book to recommend, I always recommended Ivar Jacobson's "Object-Oriented Software Engineering, A Use Case Driven Approach" but now I am recommending John W. Satzinger, Robert Jackson, Stephen D. Burd's "Systems Analysis and Design in a Changing World." When project managers facing object oriented projects asked, I recommended Steve McConnell's "Rapid Development, Taming Wild Software Schedules", now I am recommending "Systems Analysis and Design in a Changing World." My only concern in that the title does not represent the level of object oriented and component-based systems engineering with all of the supporting topics that systems analysts and project managers need to be successful that are addressed from a systems development perspective. The diagrams are the most accurate that I have found in any object oriented or component book of late. From a systems engineering perspective this is the first book that adequately covers the differences between traditional methods and object orient with component methods. Sections like "The Traditional Approach to Requirements" are followed by chapters like "The Object-Oriented Approach to Requirements." This also illustrates how this book would do well for seasoned systems analysts and project managers who are trying to cover the depth of what they now need to learn to make the transition to object oriented and component-based systems analysis and design. After all of the object oriented methods books written that claimed to be from a systems analysts perspective but contained coding examples it is refreshing to find one that contains business examples instead. "Systems Analysis and Design in a Changing World" is truly from a systems perspective. While some topics like knowledge management are not addressed directly, the material necessary to do the object oriented analysis and design work for deployments like data marts is indirectly addressed. In addition to my engineering degree, I have an MBA, "Systems Analysis and Design in a Changing World" contains many case studies that would fit well into a master's level course while providing the analysis and design support that makes the lessons learned from these stories accessible to all. Of late, I have been teaching a lot of graduate level courses ([...] my university support homepage) and I am going to work this into my classes on object oriented systems engineering and project management as a must.

This book is extremely outdated and not worth $50.00. I was able to photocopy the missing chapters from my Professor's manual. Product should be priced at about $20.00. The fact that this manual is outdated should be made clear when ordering.

About the Author
Inge van Rij is a Senior Lecturer in Musicology at the New Zealand School of Music. Her first book, Brahms's Song Collections, was published by Cambridge University Press in 2006, having received substantial funding from a Marsden Grant from the Royal Society of New Zealand. She is a regular presenter at international conferences, including both the American Musicological Society and the Society for Ethnomusicology.
