Members of a pseudonymous Nicaraguan family here talk about their lives, beginning with accounts of the late Somoza years through the triumph of the 1979 revolution, and ending in 1987. The family consists of elderly Dona Maria Lopez, essentially apolitical but sympathetic to her children's political passions; her daughter Leticia, a Sandinista collaborator and the most articulate, least ingenuous subject; and Leticia's half-sister and half-brother, Marta and Omar, active in the revolution, now employed in Sandinista agencies. Amid occasional squabbling and political grandstanding, a compelling human panorama emerges, and one of tragic dimensions, as family members come to realize the fragility of the revolutionary culture that matters so deeply to them. Hart, a language instructor at Oregon State University who spent 1983 to 1987 meeting with her subjects, makes no claim to objectivity, yet her portrayal conveys great force and her subjects' eloquence.

Ms. Hart's book is an interesting and enlightening account of the daily struggles of a Nicaraguan family. Their personal struggles and the horrible political situation strengthened their devotion to each other and their country.
A strong faith in God and family committment helped each member survive and thrive inspite of adversity.
The reader gains understanding of the political and social conditions in Nicaragua. Each family member shares their feelings and struggle.

About the Author

Habib F. Rashvand received his B.Sc. in 1969 and post-graduate qualifications in 1970 from the University of Tehran. He was selected for a training mission as the head of division for development of a new Telecom Research Centre as under a new cooperation project between the Iranian PTT and Japanese Industries including the NTT, KTT following his Doctorate at the University of Kent in 1980. Since then he earned a rich blend of industrial research and development positions with industries in collaboration with many universities including University of Southampton, University of Reading, Portsmouth University, Warwick University and Coventry University. His academic positions compile University of Tehran, University of Zambia, Coventry University, Magdeburg University and University of Warwick. His Professorship in Networks, Systems and Protocols applied in 1998 to the German Ministry of Education succeeded in 2001. Since 2004, he headed a Special Academic Quality Research Operation under Directorship of Advanced Communication Systems, which involves ITU, CTO, WHO, IEEE/IEE/IET. He was the editor-in-chief, member of editorial board and invited speaker for many research journals and conferences.

Yousef S. Kavian received the B.Sc. (Hons) degree in Electronic Engineering from the Shahid Beheshti University, Tehran, Iran, in 2001, the M.Sc. degree in Control Engineering from the Amkabir University, Tehran, Iran, in 2003 and the Ph.D. degree in Electronic Engineering from the Iran University of Science and Technology, Tehran, Iran, in 2007. After one year appointment at Shahid Beheshti University, in 2008 he joined the Shahid Chamran University as an Assistant Professor. He worked as a postdoctoral research fellow at Esslingen University and IAER, Germany, in 2010. His research interests include digital circuits and systems design, optical and wireless networking. Dr Kavian has over 50 technical publications including journal and conference papers and book chapters in these fields. He is a senior industrial engineer and trainer with more than 10 years industrial experiences.

Torn between two worlds

Terry Hollis was the son of a notorious outlaw named Black Jack. His father was murdered and Terry was raised from infancy by the women who loved his father. The question throughout the book was whether young Hollis would go straight or follow in his father's footsteps.
This story is not as fast-paced as the others, but an element of tenseness carries throughout the story. It is a well-written and enjoyable character study.

Enjoyable Yarn

I like Max Brand's stories over most other Western writers because he sidesteps page after page of monotonous action and substitutes the inner thoughts and emotions of his characters. As we get to know them we start to worry over their fate. If that is the kind of story you like, then, you are in luck here.

After having read ten or so of Max Brand's novels, I have true appreciation for his diverse work. However, I found "Black Jack" to be dull and monotonous. If a reader is looking for an entertaining read, "Black Jack" doesn't fit that need.

This little eBook clearly described the emblems of the Cathars. The images have their foundation in both gnostic and Christian movements in France and other parts of Europe.

interesting but speculative

Judith Mann's brief explication of Cathari symbolism is interesting and, for the most part, full off credible interpretations. Still one would hope for more sources sited or further reading. Also a few items seem to be based on questionable speculation, such as tying a Cathari pentagram to the Taoist five elements via Manichaeism expansion into Sung China. This seems to be unlikely to me and since sources are not given, it is hard to definitively deal with. Still, overall, this is a very readable introduction to Cathari symbolism.

Not a standalone

Lexi Ander ROCKS!
For those unfamiliar with the Sumeria's Sons series, I highly suggest that you start with book one, "Twin Flames" and keep reading until you reach the latest, "Surrounded by Crimson". No breaks...just keep reading.
Ander has built a Lycan world worthy of a SyFy series! In this newest installment, Tristan and Ushna are awaiting the birth of their "twins" (yes, the main hero is pregnant with all the typical ailments; bloating, waddle-walk, and an unending appetite for food and sex) and have just "adopted" the three children of Tristan's adulterous, now-dead, ex-Twin Flame, Theo.
Ushna has finally convinced Tristan to bond with him and they've no sooner done the deed when they are ripped apart by the evil Daniel (Theo's fake Twin Flame), the Gods/Goddesses that rule their world as well as a pretty nasty group that has spent eons killing everyone they thought was part of the royal family.
They've also discovered that Ushna's Flame, Nikita/Brian, who died when they were all young, was meant to be theirs. Tristan (King of the lycans), Ushna, and Nikita/Brian have been re-born again and again as "the first three of the first three" to lead and their predestined bond never reached fruition because Tristan and his previous incarnations didn't want to come between the Flames of Ushna and Nikita/Brian.
Tristan and his pups soon fall victim to evil-Daniel and, in order to save his life, Nikita must take him to a place between planes...in stasis. Here, the males have to make a decision to let Tristan cease to exist, never to be re-born, or the three must swear fealty to the Goddess Tiamat and become not only immortal and bound to each other for eternity, but also the rulers of her offspring.
Ander's books are filled with a language all their own and it's best to have the Glossary of Gods/Goddesses on hand at all times. Another hint...review the first three books BEFORE you pick up the fourth. It's not a book you'd want to start reading as a stand-alone because it's not. You'll just be lost and confused and that guarantees you'll disregard the book. Believe, me, you'll be missing out!

There are a lot of characters to remember along with the roles they play and I found that I had to re-read the books a few times (no hardship) and each time I learned something new.

Do I recommend the book? Yes, I do! There are a few typos but, I just didn't care! I'll put up with the grammatical errors to be part of Lexi Ander's world.

Brief rundown: this is the 4th book in the series .It picks up from the end of the last. Tristan has agreed to bond to Ushna after the dreams he had were confirmed as a glimpse of his past lives. They go to Georgia to the trial of some traitors so Tristan can reveal who he really is to the counsel. Threats ensue and its close totime for the pups to be born.Tristan just wants to finish up business , get Usna and his tribe and get home and have his babies so he and Ushna can claim ech other better.
Oh wow! Jsut when you think it cant get any better it does. There are lots more revelations, things become more clearer and new intersting developments take place. This is one amazing intriguing series. The characters are so well dne i fell in love with Both Tristan and Ushna and even Nikita from Tristans dreams. The love is so sexy and strong and what we would all wish to have and sesnsual. Did Isay its sexy, hot and sensual? A must read but you really need to read this series in order to get the full impact.

Recommendations: If you like suspense, new worlds, stories of Gods and Goddesses,intrigue, and a love that would do anything to find his mate this is for you.

Surrounded by Crimson picked up immediately where Dreams of the Forgotten ended. You need to read this series in order to best enjoy each book as this is a series of books that are all to be continued endings.

Surrounded by Crimson was more cohesive and not as overwhelming as the previous story. I felt like even though the author continued introducing new things, she finally got down to working with the storyline and characters she had. The new things introduced served to bring everything together. More bits of the plot moved forward and were resolved than in previous novels and I was not left with so many questions or worrying if I missed important details.

The plot is starting to become very tense and feels like things are either at their climax or about to reach that point. Things are more intense and I am on the edge of my seat waiting for what is to come. I need to know what happens next. I need see how things will turn out with the baddies, but more importantly, I need to know that things will be OK for the good guys.

This world continues to be fabulous and fascinating and I can so easily see this being made into an audiobook or movie. It is just so epic that the reader can’t help but imagine these wondrous things in their head. I just hope other readers are as inventive as I have been because I am in love with the way I am picturing these characters and their surroundings.

Again, the author carried through the absolute love and devotion these characters have for each other not only as mates, but as family and friends. I love how this thread has been nothing but perfectly consistent throughout this series. In fact, it gets more developed and more pronounced as the books are issued. Surrounded by Crimson has taken this love to the next level and i cannot wait to see what happens when all the men get back together. I just know their connection will be off the charts HOT because of the love they feel for each other.

Ms. Ander, when will the next book be out? I need it now!!! :)

It is heartwarming to see her images of animals who are happy, safe, and free at sanctuary; and the images of beautiful, intelligent animals who are treated as merely objects are truly heartbreaking. I believe this is an incredibly important book for anyone who cares about animals; not just dogs and cats, but all animals, regardless of species, around the world. She sheds a light on many issues people may not be fully familiar with. Anyone in the animal rights movement or who just wants to make a difference in how humans treat animals, should get this book. I am so grateful that the author has used her amazing photography skills to raise awareness of the plight of animals. A beautiful book that will invoke a range of emotions in the reader.

This is a wonderful book full of though-provoking images. From the ways you use and exploit animals from the fashion, entertainment and the food industry. Would highly recommend. Great coffee table book to get your friends thinking.

Yes -- We Animals!

Astounding!!! I must admit while I immediately ordered this book -- once it arrived I was hesitant to look inside. I can't bear to watch the videos that are posted by Mercy for Animals, PETA and others -- I know people from all over do horrible things to animals and I just cannot watch. But this project is a real eye opener. The photographs tell the story - and are accompanied by comments from Jo-Anne. Her documentation is unbelievable and her courage in gathering these photos is impressive. You cannot look into the eyes of these fellow animals -- starting with the cover! - and not see the soul, the emotions, the pain and fear.....And babies are babies every where - no matter who they are. These fellow beings are social in nature and yet we use them for ourselves, subject them to isolation from their own kind, subject them to horrible pain without any feelings for them. You cannot look through this book and justify to yourself what we are doing to them. We all need to rethink what we eat, how we experiment, how we "entertain". (rodeos, zoos, bull fights, circuses....) It is heartbreaking and also uplifting to view the section on the sanctuaries and read about the rescues. This is one of those books that belongs everywhere -- to reach more people with its message. Excellent and well recommended!!!

About the Author

Dave Trott is the�chairman of the�full-service creative�agency�The Gate London. It is part of The Gate worldwide, which has offices in New York, Hong Kong, Singapore, Edinburgh, and Dublin. His former agency, Gold Greenlees Trott, was voted Agency of the Year by Campaign Magazine, and Most Creative Agency in the World by Ad Age in New York. In 2004 he was given the D&AD President’s Award for lifetime achievement in advertising.

Outwit the competition?

THE subtitle of the book is “A master class in out-thinking the competition”. Dave Trott does not live up to this promise.

I would go as far as saying that most of us would like to have competition like his, if this is all it takes to outwit them.

I do not write about disappointing books. I prefer not to bring them to anyone’s attention, and let them gather dust in a warehouse. Despite the misleading subtitle, this is an engaging book with lots of wit and wisdom written in a unusually accessible style.

Dave Trott is an advertising agency executive, who was inducted into the Creative Circle Advertising Hall of Heroes in 2009.

The thoughts in each of the book's 10 parts are arranged around a memorable story that enriches learning and embeds the idea in the memory. While the book is aimed at readers in the advertising industry, the messages have a much wider relevance.

Below are three examples.

In the part titled: “Creative is an adjective, not a noun” the concept is revealed through the story of an old lady’s conflict with British Gas. She resisted having British Gas change the pipes below her house as part of the national conversion to North Sea gas. She wanted her house left alone.

Neighbours described her as an “old dear”. She had lived in the house ever since she got married. Her husband was an abusive drunk who beat her each night for years. (In those days, wives did not report these matters to the police.)

One night, after the usual drinking and beating, he left and never returned.

It was a mixed blessing - the beatings stopped, but there was shame attached to being abandoned by one's husband. Neighbours understood this and were kind to her.

British Gas was unmoved and dug up the pipes in her home lifting the carpets, the lino and then the floorboards. The old lady watched and wept.

The British Gas team found a pit with a human skeleton in it. The skull had been crushed.

The old lady confessed - she couldn’t take the beatings anymore. Over a period of months, she had dug the pit and disposed of the sand. When it was large enough, and he came home drunk, she hit him with a cast-iron frying pan until he was dead. Then she dragged the body to the pit under the floorboards, covered it, and told everyone he had walked out on her.

That was an extraordinarily creative (if drastic) solution.

However, like all creativity it doesn’t come in a flash. Most creative acts require analysis of the primary problem (he beat her) and the secondary problem (she couldn’t leave). Solution? He had to disappear.

Creative solutions require hard work, often over months. The frail, frightened lady did it with the effort required to make the creative solution happen - day after day, for months.

Failure to do the hard work leaves a good idea just an idea.

Trott attended a discussion between Stephen Hawking, James Dyson, Robert Winston and Richard Dawkins, hosted by the Science Museum. The four range from the “merely brilliant to genius”.

They talked to each other about their work, bubbling with fun and eagerness. It seemed as if they could not wait to share what they had found out about the world.

What struck Trott as he watch and listened to them was that these were not merely four brilliant people, but four creative people. What makes them creative is their enquiring minds.

Edward de Bono says: “There are many people calling themselves creative who are mere stylists.” What separates the “creative” from the “stylist” is an enquiring mind. “Why does it have to be that way? Why?”

After divorcing his first wife, Trott met Cathy who was to become his second wife. She is Chinese, and hails from Singapore. The couple went to Singapore so Trott could meet his new wife’s family.

Her father had two wives and eight children, and she was a child of the second wife. They lived together in one house and went to the same school.

At school, Cathy was often asked what number wife her mother was. The question was not unusual in Singapore, and one she realised was unusual only when she came to London to study art.

After the meeting, Cathy asked Trott how he had found her father, since he spoke little English. Trott admitted that he felt odd being in the company of a man with two wives. Cathy said: "That’s funny, because he’s not sure he’s comfortable with the idea of his daughter marrying a man who just divorces his wives when he’s fed up with them."

The Western system makes perfect sense. If the relationship cannot work, you both get on with your separate lives.

To the Chinese, if a man takes on responsibility for a woman and children, he does so for life. Cathy’s father thought Trott took marriage trivially, changing wives as he did cars. When you get bored, you trade in the old one for a new model.

He realised that Cathy’s father and he actually agreed: both wanted to treat their wives with respect. But they had remarkably different ways of doing it.

Trott’s way was to treat her as an equal, with all the same opportunities, but also the same problems and responsibilities. The way of Cathy’s father was to shoulder all those problems and responsibilities himself.

Too often we think there is only one right way of seeing things, our way. What follows is that for me to be right, I must prove you are wrong. Little is learned this way.

As the philosopher Bertrand Russell said: "The problem with the world is that the ignorant are arrogant and cocksure while the intelligent are full of doubt."

There is much to think about in this easily read book. Simply ignore the misleading title.

Much more than just an advertising book.

There's nothing worse than a very droll book about advertising/marketing. Lord knows there are plenty of them.

But at the end of the day, advertising people are charged with making magic out of the mundane and making something for a broader audience than themselves (sometimes this actually happens). Fortunately, Mr. Trott realizes this and has transcended the usual "we did this and by God, it was awesome!" retelling of tales from the ad trenches and written something that most anyone-regardless of vocation or lifestage-can take something away from.

Not bad

This could really just be a pamphlet that says "question assumptions" and then lists some common types of cognitive bias and their definitions. But not bad.
