Practical guide for creating your survey

Brace has written a very practical guide for writing all kinds of questionnaires, both paper and digital. Using this text, you will be able to create and execute your survey. Many different types of questions and the correct applications are clearly presented. All practices are well-grounded in current marketing research theory, but the non-academic will find this an easy read with tons of practical use. This is one I intend to keep on my shelf.

About the Author
SEN M. KUO is Associate Professor of Electrical Engineering at Northern Illinois University. He has served as a consultant in the areas of adaptive signal processing applications and systems development to General Motors, Texas Instruments, and others. His research has been widely published, and in 1993, Dr. Kuo received the IEEE Consumer Electronics Society Chester Sall Award.

DENNIS R. MORGAN is a Distinguished Member of the Technical Staff of the Acoustics Research Department at AT&T Bell Laboratories, Murray Hill, New Jersey. Dr. Morgan is currently engaged in research on adaptive acoustic signal processing techniques.

The best reference for ANC algorithms

This excellent text is written for advanced study and practicing engineers who need to design controllers for active noise control systems. The emphasis is on the algorithms that are usually implemented in a Digital Signal Processor. The book's treatment of acoustics, sensors, and actuators is not as in-depth as texts by Fuller or Nelson. Included in the book is C and assembly code for the most popular adaptive control techniques, but beware of bugs and patent issues. One of the algorithms covered in detail is the Filtered-X Least Mean Squares technique that one of the Authors (Morgan) help to make popular in the community.

This is an excellent book for persons with signal processing background. The book provides only minimum information about acoustics for a signal processing person and does not confuse with too much of details. In this way, the book makes to reader comfortable. Also many aspects of signal processing which can improve the performance of an active noise control (ANC)system are explained and hence the reader feels more confident that he too can work in this field. This is very much essential as the adaptive algorithms play a crucial role in the ANC implementation. The FXLMS algorithm and its problems are well described. To start with I did not know any thing about ANC, but this book has helped me to get good understanding about it. Presnently, I am able to do research contributions to international journal and to conferences. Further, I have taken up projects at national level in ANC. I feel this book has presented the subject in a simple way retaining all the intricate details. This background enables a reseacher even to follow new developments taking place in this filed. This is a very very useful and excellent book.

This is an excellent book for the signal processing community as the stress is mainly on algorithms and implementation. A reseacher who wants to work in this field without much background in acoustics, finds this book very useful and it enables him to get to know how he can apply his adaptive signal processing skills to active noise control. This book provides in a simple way the active noise control field and its associated problems. As the book provides only required amount of acoustical details and explains the filtered LMS algorithm very clearly unlike other books, for a beginer it is a very good book. I didn't know any thing aboout ANC when I started, but to day I am able to contribute even to international journals and conferences. Further I have under taken projects at national level from government agencies to develop ANC systems. I feel this book is really well written and it makes the reader keen to know about the subject and provides him high level of confidence. I sincerely recommend this book for any person who is new to this field and has signal processing background. It is a very very very excellent book.

Although Maltz died in 1975, the book is written in Maltz's voice by five sales and psycho-cybernetics experts: Dan S. Kennedy, William T. Brooks, Matt Oechsli, and Jeff Paul and Pamela Yellen. The book outlines a self-improvement program designed to help sales professionals overcome low self-esteem using Maltz's own techniques for reprogramming the subconscious mind. Coauthor Kennedy writes that the goal of Zero-Resistance Selling is to create "a new kind of selling experience, free of all the resistance and obstacles manufactured inside the mind, and free of the resistance served up by prospects who sense insecurity on the part of the salesperson."

Keegan Allen is an actor, photographer, and writer, who currently appears as Toby Cavanaugh on the ABC Family television series Pretty Little Liars. Allen also has appeared in several films, including Bukowski and The Sound and the Fury (directed by James Franco) and Palo Alto (directed by Gia Coppola). He debuted off-Broadway in the play Small Engine Repair by John Pollano. He lives in Los Angeles, California.

I took up photography late in life and just a few years ago. I only shoot film and am always searching for new books about film photography (rare as they are). I pre-ordered this book with the suspicion that there would be at least some small tribute to film. I was completely ignorant of the young author - and his work as an actor. More important to me. . . he has an XPan!
I did not expect to be so thoroughly charmed by this book. It is sweet and he is talented. His images (which appear to be all shot on film), are seriously GOOD. A nice mix of "urban", "noir" and thoughtful portraits - plus much more. His words and poems are eloquent, touching, and I enjoy reading them as much as viewing the photos. I am so happy that Mr. Allen shared his very early photos and the stories behind them; because well, it is a delightful, relatable read and I am always interested in how "photographic journeys" begin. Thank you for sharing. Your book has inspired me. I hope there will be a 2nd someday. . .

worth every penny!

Absolutely amazing. I read it all in one sitting. Keegan's photography is beautiful, even the photos he took as a 10 year old boy are mind blowing. The poetry/lyrics are just wow (made me cry) and it was really neat to get a glimpse at all the behind the scenes of filmmaking. I bought this book solely based on his photography from Instagram (the only thing I have ever seen him act in is Palo Alto) and I'm blown away. You have a fan for life, Keegan.

About the Author
Bradley Levinson is Professor of Education at Indiana University, Bloomington.

Jacob P. K. Gross, Ph.D. in history, philosophy, and policy studies in education, with a concentration in higher education, from Indiana University, is a policy and planning research analyst with the West Virginia Higher Education Policy Commission. He also collaborates with the Project on Academic Success at Indiana University on several projects, leading the project on student flow.

Christopher Hanks, Ph.D. in philosophy of education at Indiana University, is assistant professor of education at Grand Valley State University in Allendale, Michigan. His work focuses on epistemology, theories of the mind, education as cultivation of the self, and cosmopolitan education, and he has published in the journal Educational Theory and Philosophy of Education, the annual volume of the Philosophy of Education Society.

Julia Heimer Dadds, Ph.D. candidate in curriculum studies at Indiana University, has a lifetime of nonprofit work with children and families in poverty, people with disabilities, and the elderly, including seven years as a Head Start program director. She currently works as a board member for Community Justice and Mediation and for the Youth Services Bureau of Bloomington, Indiana.

Kafi Kumasi, Ph.D. in curriculum studies from Indiana University, is an assistant professor of library and information science at Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan. Her teaching and research interests center on school library media issues, particularly critical and sociocultural approaches to adolescent literacy education and library services.

Joseph Link is studying for the Ph.D. in the history of education at Indiana University. For many years he has directed a nonprofit program for disability services and taught at Xavier University in Cincinnati, Ohio.

Dini Metro-Roland, Ph.D. in curriculum studies and philosophy of education at Indiana University, is assistant professor of educational foundations at Western Michigan University. a must-have book for systems biology and gene regulatory networks

There are quite a few books about systems biology and gene regulatory networks, most of which are very disappointing. I find only books written by scientists who are really working in this field are good. If you are not sure about one book, check the author's publications!

On the way to the library to borrow this book, I was thinking, among ~10 books I have read, I would only recommend Eric Davidson's book (biology aspects) and Uri Alon's book (mathematics aspects). After briefly reading this one, I think this book would also be on my recommendation list as a practical guide. It is very funny to find that this author also recommended those two books.

This book has three parts: the first is the introduction of modeling (Ch1-5); the second is about various models of regulation (Ch6-12), including implicit models, single-cell stochastic models, mass-action kinetics models, boolean models, Bayesian models, etc; the last part is about misc aspects of modeling (Ch13-22). They are well organized and coherent. The text is clear and easy to understand (I am not a native speaker), and the book is written for those who are suffering from math-phobia. The best part is, there are many links to free softwares and examples codes of models, so that you can play these models immediately. That's why I take this book as a practical guide in my recommendation list.

A complaint: figures have no numbers and legends; formulas look amateur. I understand that the author doesn't want to intimidate common readers. But these annoy me a little bit.

In a summary, a must-have book for systems biology and gene regulatory networks.

About the Author
Donald J. Dahm is a professor at Rowan University. In 2004, Dr. Dahm received the Outstanding Achievement in Near Infrared Spectroscopy Award from the Eastern Analytical Symposium. He was selected in 2011 by Rowan students as the professor they most wanted to give “The Last Lecture,” an annual event based on Randy Pausch’s book. Don’s most recent book, coauthored with his son Kevin, is Interpreting Diffuse Reflectance and Transmittance: A Theoretical Introduction to Absorption Spectroscopy of Scattering Materials (2007).

Eric A. Nelson’s career spanned work as a chemistry instructor and as an elected officer and legislative representative for his faculty organization. His professional interests include research on reading comprehension in the sciences and measures of student mathematics achievement in preparation for study in chemistry. Prior to his retirement, he served on committees at the state and regional level working to raise academic standards and encourage the adoption of research-based curricula in STEM fields.

This is a very good book written in a Pseudo-Programmed Instruction format. You have to work your way through the book.
There are sufficient drill problems on most topics commonly found in Introductory General Chemistry text books.
The Brief Contents on...Page v...allows one to easily find the topics of interest for the required textbook. There is also a comprehensive Index.
The STOP sign labeled Practice Exercises included should/must be done before moving on.
The material is divided into Lessons, for example, "Word Problems."
The answers to Problems and a Review Quiz with answer are given at the end of each Chapter.
Each lesson is filled with Practice Problem Sets(A, B, C...). The answers are provided at the end of the respective Chapters.
If you have already taken a General Chemistry Course, make sure you have this book for the convenient review of most topics.
The final Chapter discusses Nuclear Chemistry. However, the book doesn't include Atomic Orbitals and Atomic Spectra. Consistent with this is that there is no discussion of absorption and/or emission spectra of atoms. However, in this instance it is not necessarily a shortcoming. The book is designed to emphasize the more classical topics in General Chemistry. There is also no direct discussion of colligative properties.

Except for the absence of Atomic Spectra, this book covers most of the expected topics of General Chemistry.
Based on the topics covered and the utility of the topics covered, this book is a solid introduction and/or review of classical General Chemistry. This is primarily a review/workbook of selected topics. Therefore, I am awarding it 5 stars.
