Highly recommended for demystifying the world of business strategy.

A business model is the profit formula that sets the context for how you make money. A business model reflects the company's strategic context. Armed with these two simple but powerful ideas Jim Muehlhausen takes you through through the process and considerations of creating a business model. Business models matter and Muehlhausen provides a clearly articulated, example laden and actionable reference that should be recommended reading for executives, managers, consultants and everyone else.

Muehlhausen has given everyone a great resource by demystifying the world of business models and related strategies into a set of powerful ideas, tools and concepts. This is not a dummies book in the sense that it trivializes the subject area. Rather it takes a really smart person to make a complex subject accessible -- something this book does very well.

While this book is not a replacement for business savvy, experience and intelligence, it does provide a ready made approach for level setting the diverse set of teams involved in designing the business model. The book is divided into five parts and 25 chapters.

Part 1: Getting Started with Business Models offers a base line description of what a business model is and why it is important.
Part 2: Creating a Winning Business Model provides a market based approach to defining the business's profit model. The content in this part reflects a market/industry orientation to the business model with solid advice.
Part 3: Dealing with Change contains three chapters concentrating on recognizing and leading through the inevitable erosion of business model effectiveness in the face of changing market competition and innovation.

The first three parts form a core curriculum for business models that should be required reading. The remaining parts reflect applications and issues with business models including a focus on innovation, disruption, crowdsourcing and virtualization. The final part 5 closes on a high note concentrating on reviewing basic business models, signs that the models are working, sources of future innovation, and failure modes.

Overall a comprehensive, clear and welcomed addition to the range of literature about business models. The book is a little light on technology issues and the nuances involved in creating new business models for a digital world, but the foundation is here and well worth your time, attention and future reference.

Only true dummies think there is nothing left to learn, even for a subject they feel they already know. This book is one that makes everyone from expert to novice better at building a critical aspect of any business in any industry.

A "Must Have" for any serious business owner or executive

This is a "Must Have" for any business owner or executive and a game changer in the way we develop and use business models. Jim does a phenomenal job of taking a nebulous concept and breaking it down into very accessible elements that are applicable to any business. In addition, the book gives an abundance of extremely useful tips, tools and tutorials on how to use the concepts outlined in the book.

There is no shortage of business books and theories on business, strategy and "How To's". One of the problems that I have repeatedly faced in business and particularly small business is bridging the gap between theory and practice, especially in the field of strategy, and most especially in the context of driving business development. Much has been written about business models, yet until now, the concept has been poorly defined and relatively inaccessible to most. Other frameworks outline the elements of a model, but most if not all, are devoid of any consistent means to define, evaluate and balance the elements.

What makes this book different is that it not only breaks the model down into basic and very accessible concepts. It also gives a means to drill down into each element and to evaluate the relative importance of each of these to the sustained profitability of the business. Whether you are a novice or an experienced business professional, you can view your model at either broad brushed or granular level, and then you are able to score, benchmark and analyze the elements and factors that affect your model. It allows you to identify the strengths and weaknesses of your business in an objective way by providing both the top-down and the bottom-up view, which is rare in any business book or tool.

Jim eloquently makes the point that Business Models erode and if you are not working to move forward, you are in fact going backwards. There is a tremendous amount of background information including the explanation of different types of business models.

This is a phenomenal book and now a permanent fixture in my business tool kit. If you have ANY interest in running a business, I suggest you get a copy and use it often. Truth be told, you will probably never write another business plan again!

This is very useful, give me more!

Markets are shifting, buyers are purchasing and consuming products differently. This book is refreshed how I view my current businesses, and consider where I will invest my resources moving forward. As I see it there are three critical dimensions to business success... market, culture, and finance. This book is as fresh a look at how to position and think in a fresh way about how assets can be shifted to increase profits... often in ways that are hard to see from the 'inside' of running my businesses.

Also there is a good balance between good information (often in story form) , and an analytical process to tlook thru three model lenses: Sustainability, Offering, and Monatization. There is a way to put simple numbers to things to get clear where your business needs can be tweaked to improve it an any three of these areas... and ideas on how to start talking with other businesses owners to get it done.

Great read, well worth the $20 -- and for me better in paper as I liked writing on it -- folding pages, etc...

I am giving 4 start instead of 5 because I believe there are more workbooks or workshops oriented content that can help take a business from where it is to where it could be... and I understand that a 1000 page book would be pretty unwieldy...

Coverage of aliphatic synthesis includes a summary of all the reactions shown in the two volumes and gives several examples of how to put these together in multi-step syntheses. Coverage of aromatic reactions includes in-depth analysis of the electrophilic aromatic substitution mechanism, the effect of different substituents on the EAS mechanism, the two different types of nucleophilic aromatic reactions and summaries and examples for aromatic syntheses. Coverage of the nucleophilic addition and substitution at the acyl carbon, like coverage of all the other reactions in the volumes is extremely clear and well-organized, showing the different variations of these reactions in a specific, easy-to-understand progression. The same thing can be said for coverage of enolate ions and enols and their reactions. All mechanisms are color coded so that you can keep track of the atoms in the reaction. Coverage of nomenclature includes of a review of introductory nomenclature, nomenclature of dienes, aromatic compounds, carbonyl compounds, and carboxyl compounds and their derivatives. Coverage of nomenclature ends with an explanation of how to determine the priority of different functional groups in order to name multifunctional compounds. The end of most chapters contains a compilation of the summary of all the reactions in the chapter. This volume includes extensive coverage of C-13 NMR spectroscopy with an emphasis on both theory of NMR and on how to interpret the C-13 NMR Spectra of Organic Compounds. C-13 NMR spectra for all common classes of organic compounds are shown. The book does include some repetition of material, since the author believes that repetition is necessary to learn concepts. The summaries at the end of each chapter are a repetition of what was taught earlier in the chapter that can be used as a study guide. The reason that this book is split into two volumes is the fact that it exceeds the maximum page length for a book distributed by Amazon.com. The author tried to split the book in such a way that the topics usually covered in the first semester organic chemistry course are in the first volume while the topics usually covered in the second semester organic chemistry course are in the second volume. Perfect for studying for the MCAT, PCAT and other pre-professional exams. Note that the page numbering for Volume 2 ends where Volume 1 left off. The index includes pages numbers from both volumes.

If you want an **A** in o-chem look no further!!

I used Step by Step Organic Chemistry Volume 2 in my college level Organic Chemistry II class and it helped me tremendously. Like the first volume, the second also breaks reactions and theories into easy-to-follow steps and is a must have for any Organic Chemistry student. The second volume discusses more complex reactions not included in the first volume AND it also includes an excellent, and in my opinion, in-depth guide to mastering spectroscopy. I used both volume 1 and 2 as my primary form of textbook and made A's in both of my o-chem classes. However, this book would also be great as a supplemental textbook if the one your professor assigned isn't quite clear enough. It can even be used as a study guide! I personally used this book to study for the ACS exam while in college, and I even returned to it years later in order to study for the PCAT. This book (both volumes 1 and 2) are seriously the most helpful textbooks I ever bought during my entire undergraduate college career.

Helped tremendously with O Chem 2!

If you haven't already checked out Dr. Janet Maxwell's "Step by Step Organic Chemistry: Volume 1," it's more of the same great straightforward stuff, only it covers things more likely to be in your Organic Chemistry II class. Once again, it's easy to understand, clear, and has very well organized reaction mechanisms. If you've ever had a hard time reading an Organic Chemistry book, this is not one of those. I would highly suggest this to ANYONE who is struggling with Organic Chemistry.

I was struggling very badly with synthesis and retro-synthesis problems in my Organic Chemistry II class. This book helped me so much. The book required for my class? I stared at it for hours trying to make sense of it. Save yourself some time and effort decoding a disorganized textbook for a very hard subject and buy this one! You won't regret it!

Another must have!

This book is a must have for any chemistry student, or even anyone who is just interested in learning a little more about organic chemistry as a whole. Honestly, this book even taught me more about general inorganic chemistry than both high school and lower level collegiate chemistry classes combined. In addition, when many scientific books out on the market are difficult to read and comprehend, this book was extremely easy. The author uses many different learning methods to facilitate retention including images, charts, and classic text. I still have my copy and recommend it to everyone.

Excellent resource for homeschoolers

This little book is a gem! I have used it the past 2 years for my children's advent/christmas unit...it has tons of ideas for hands on learning via crafts and ethnic recipes. Book begins with a general introduction of the history of Christmas, then discusses individual countries. Addresses many European countries, the North American countries, and several Asian countries (Japan, China, the Philippines, and Thailand). Africa and South America are somewhat neglected being represented only by Nigeria & Brazil. Still a wide variety of cultures & customs are covered. There are also general Christmas themed worksheets in the back of the book. Copyright permission for classroom use is granted. Also lists additional resources for further exploration...

My only complaint is that on p. 86 of my copy, there are directions and a diagram for a spider web ornament - the directions tell me to "Sew the web by bringing the needle up through hole 1, down through the center hole, up through hole 3, down thruogh center..." but my diagram is not labeled with the numbers. If anyone has the labeling pattern, I would appreciate it as my kids wanted to make these for their godparents this year.

This is an awesome resource for a variety of countries! The activities for each country are diverse, including books you can read, activities, and crafts, which are suitable for various ages. The included recipes are easily made. There are also "extra" activities in the back that are great to add to the list of activities to prepare for Christmas, when you want something fun more than educational. Overall, I have found this book to be my favorite resource for writing out my lesson plans regarding Christmas in various countries!

I would recommend that you purchase this book if you're interested ancient near Eastern mythology. It is very enlightening and eye-opening. There are some things that could be updated but the book was written in 1985.

Cervantes's masterpiece Don Quixote , Henry Fielding's favorite novel, was also much admired by Fielding's contemporary Smollett, who published a vigorous, highly readable translation in 1755. Eighteenth-century collections will be enriched by this edition (not reissued since the 19th century, and never published in America), which includes Smollett's life of Cervantes, his note on the translation, and his annotations to the novel. The foreword and introduction by Fuentes, however, are disappointing; concentrating on Cervantes and his times they tell us almost nothing about the raison d'etre for this edition, Smollett's translation. Smollett's pungent, jocular prose is ideally suited for his task; his translation makes a delightful alternative to the various attempts to render Don Quixote into modern English. Well translated, Well produced; I Recommend this Edition

It's been a long time since I've read Don Quixote, and that last time it was in a scholarly sense (meaning, I was forced to read it). I enjoyed it, and thought about reading it again, so I picked up the tattered, coverless, mass-market paperback that was pressed so tightly against the inside veneer of the bookshelf that it was literally stuck there. My first impression brought back a memory (and what might actually be some sort of phobia) -- footnotes! There were literally so many footnotes, attempting to explain the translation in order to make it more readable, that it distracted /irritated /frightened me, and I crammed the book right back where I found it.

I went on a quest for a footnote-free edition, and on the suggestion of a friend picked up the "new Grossman translation". I picked it up and flipped through the pages (the softcover edition)... there were some footnotes in there, but not too many, and they seemed to, for the most part, to explain spanish terms or old currencies and the like. No case of footnotes outweighing text on any given page... so that was a good start and an immediate salve for my (admittedly bizarre) footnote phobia.

That's how I came to own this version of Don Quixote. Now that I have it, I can say:

I don't miss the footnotes (not that I of all people would), because the text is extremely readable without explanation. The story seems jauntier and more funny than I remember... although I am no scholar, and can not read the original due to my own linguistic failures, I can only assume that this more joyful gait is owed to the translation. Go Grossman!

Another important point: the production quality of the paperback edition is phenomenal -- what other publishers should strive for. The paper is heavy and opaque yet it holds well, the pages (and the cover) feeling very fluid in the hand. It sounds silly, but with a ~1000 page novel, it makes a big difference. I was able to hold the book in one hand and read comfortably. Also, the generous wings on both covers came in handy when a bookmark or paper scrap could not be found to mark my place. Go Harper Perrenial!

I wont critique the actual story here, as that has been done to death. I will keep my critique to this wonderful, straightforward, footnote-lite, feel-good edition. And this is it: I highly recommend it, a beautiful and proudly-built edition that is certainly as worthy of literary study as it is an enjoyable and entertaining way to relax. Now go and tilt at a windmill, or something.

I loved this book when I read it a few years ...

I loved this book when I read it a few years ago in my World Literature class. I loved it so much that at the time it had become my all time favorite novel. I read it off and on through the years, and I have always loved it, but now something has changed. The characters and the overall story is still highly enjoyable, but I will admit, the side stories are kind of boring and slow down the enjoyment of the novel, like little entertainment speed bumps. Quixote and Sancho are still hilariously stupid, and insane, but every time I have to hear the tragedy of some scorned lover, or love triangle, I now find myself yawning. I guess outside the confines of a classroom with in depth analysis of the novel, these little segments are a drag. I review based off of entertainment, and I still say this novel is a solid 4 out of 5 stars for entertainment, for it is practically slapstick comedy filled with violence, vomit, and poo, but it is classic so it is taught in classrooms, awesome!

My new favorite classic

Don Quixote has the humor of Nacho Libre and a weird blend of fantasy and reality that I can only compare to Galaxy Quest. I. Loved. This. Book. I was surprised how funny it was. Like laugh-out-loud funny with crude potty humor (my favorite) and violence that the Three Stooges would love. For example, Don Quixote does something absolutely crazy until I can’t stand him but then he gets the crap beaten out of him so I felt sorry for him and kind of liked him again until, of course, he does something crazy again. It actually takes a while to get tired of that cycle because it manages to be funny every time. By the time I was tired of it, Don Quixote started to change and develop more. The story is tragic, too, so it has some depth (but even the tragedy manages to be kind of funny).

If you read this novel in high school and feel like you didn’t read the same book as me, YOU DIDN’T. You need to read the Edith Grossman translation. It’s amazing. It flows well. It’s modern enough to understand yet she worked hard to keep as much of the context of the time period and language as possible. The style feels similar to reading Jane Austen. It’s not totally modern but not old enough that it’s hard to understand. Edith’s footnotes in this novel were great. They gave context when needed. They pointed out plot holes that I didn’t even notice like someone in the room talking even though the author never mentioned them coming in. She also did her best to explain the word play humor that sadly didn’t translate to English. If you’re still not convinced to read it because it’s long, I can tell you that the reason it’s so long is because there are chivalric novellas inserted into the narrative. They’re good stories but if you are intimidated by how long it is, you could skip these novellas.

Let us consider this from Saint John Eudes in this excellent work: What truth can there be in the claim that we are Christians and adore a crucified God, a God agonizing and dying upon a Cross, a God who for love of us gives up so noble and excellent life, a God Who sacrifices Himself for us every day, before our eyes upon our altars for our salvation, if we are not ready to sacrifice to Him all that we hold dearest in the world, and even life itself, which in any case belongs to Him by all rights? Surely we are not Christians if we are not in these dispositions. Therefore I say, and this will immediately be clear to anyone who gives a little thought to the truths I have outlined, that all Christians ought to be martyrs, if not in actual fact, at least in intention and in will. So true is this, that if they are not martyrs of Jesus Christ, they will be martyrs of Satan. Choose whichever of the two you love more. If you live under the tyranny of sin, you will be a martyr to your self-love and your passions, and consequently a martyr to the devil. But if you desire to be a martyr of Jesus Christ, you must strive to live in the spirit of martyrdom. What is the spirit of martyrdom? It is a spirit that had five excellent attributes: 1.it is the spirit of strength and constancy which fears only God and sin, and cannot be shaken or overthrown, either by promises or threats, by persuasion or violence. 2.It is the spirit of deepest humility, which feels only horror for the vainglory and publicity of the world, and loves contempt and humiliations. 3.It is the spirit of self-mistrust and of most firm confidence in Jesus Christ our Lord, our Strength, in whom all things can be done. 4.If is the spirit of perfect detachment from the world and everything that is in the world. Those who are to sacrifice their lives to God must also sacrifice to Him all else besides. 5.It is the spirit of most burning love for our Lord Jesus Christ, who leads those animated by this spirit to do all and suffer all for love of Him, who dies and suffered all for them. It so inflames them that, for love of Him, they consider mortification and suffering to be a paradise of joys, to be sought and desired while they avoid and detest the pleasures of this world as much as they would hell itself. This is the spirit of martyrdom,. Implore, O Lord, who is the King of Martyrs, to fill you with this spirit. Pray to the Queen of martyrs, and all the martyrs, too, that they may obtain this spirit for you from the Son of God, by their holy prayers. Cultivate a particular devotion to the saintly martyrs. Make a point, also, of praying for all those who will have to suffer martyrdom, in order that God may grant them the spirit and grace of martyrdom. Pray especially for those who will have to suffer the persecution of antichrist at the end of the world, for it will be the most cruel and horrible of all persecutions. Finally, strive to develop within yourself, by imitation, a perfect image of the lives of the holy martyrs and, what is more, the life of the King and the Queen of martyrs, Jesus and Mary, so that they may make you worthy to resemble them in death.

A book on 15th century statecraft with little application elsewhere.

Machiavellian is a term oft associated with those persons who are ruthless in their pursuit of ascendancy in life. However, to extend Machiavelli's advice on how to be an effective statesman in the 15th century to modern times needs more than a little contrivance. "Machiavellian" can be substituted with a plethora of different words in the English language considering he was not the first, nor the last to realise that being an effective statesman required efficient ruthlessness and a fair amount of guile.

That being said, Machiavelli achieves what he sets out to achieve (i.e. A manual that could guide a fledgling prince expand and consolidate his state) in a most brilliant manner. His examples are profound and although the number of troops he cites may be a tad sketchy at times, he does an excellent job of recounting the names and the stratagems behind major military, diplomatic and other (some of which are less-than-savoury) manoeuvres proving that he was a chronicler beyond par.

This book is exceedingly well-written and the only reason I felt the need to give it only 4 stars is due to it's relevance (or lack thereof). We, in the 21st century do not form the target audience for Machiavelli and there is little in this book to take home, that hasn't already been touched upon by other sources both literary and otherwise.

Simple, but heavy, cutthroat cynicism

"The Prince" is an important, albeit controversial, work that still holds popular appeal today. The book's concern is an individual's rise to power; a formidable discourse, explaining that abandoning one's morals and ethics is sometimes a necessity in order to reach the top. Sensitive readers will recognize, however, that Machiavelli's endorsement of cut-throat behavior is mainly the result of tremendous cynicism. Not only is he cynical about the way the world works, he's aware of his own cynicism. Before Machiavelli, political theory was, essentially, "virtue will be rewarded" (Plato, Aristotle). But in Renaissance Italy, it's pretty obvious that was not always, or at least not only, true. From that perspective Machiavelli is terrifyingly radical; but from a more modern perspective, he resembles the garden-variety politician, especially in that his core ideas center upon keeping princes in power.

Maurizio Viroli's introductory essay is basically an abbreviated version of his book "Machiavelli" (Oxford U.P., 1998). Viroli places Machiavelli in the tradition of classical republicanism going back through the Florentine humanists to Cicero and Livy, and he demonstrates effectively how Machiavelli's works are imbued with the language of that tradition, especially from the late Middle Ages on. Viroli's republican Machiavelli espoused the "vivere civile" ("civil life"), a political ideal that could only be realized in a republic, where people could participate in politics while subjecting themselves willingly to the rule of law because of their love of country and desire to serve the common good. The means enabling their political participation was rhetoric, an art central to the Roman republic and the republican tradition, and, Viroli insists, to Machiavelli's world view and his works. Consequently, if one recognizes Machiavelli's embrace of rhetoric, Viroli concludes that the notion of Machiavelli the scientist, the father of political science, must be rejected.

Politicians usually read this text in the first political science class which they take. Actually, understanding Politics without understanding the principles in this text is an impossibility. A person who does not understand the principles of this text is too naive to understand why their leaders do what they do. Politics occurs in business, family life, and other settings, as well as government; Machiavelli's rules may be applied in all of these. Though living by these rules isn't necessary, a successful politician must act with mindfulness of their implications, or face failure. Considering the far reaching implications of Machiavelli's thought, one might wonder why elementary school children do not study "the Prince."
Many people don't have the guts to face what Machiavelli says. He presents the rules of 'hardball' politics; the only time that he mentions morality is when he describes the occasions in which a leader may need to fake it. Politicians have become so adept in following these rules that those whom they lead will often take offense at the suggestion that their leaders live by them. Read this book and understand the daily news.
"The Prince" is the quintessential text of Political Science. The Dover edition, though small, does not lack any of the origional text. It does lack the clutter of scholarly commentaries. It belongs on the shelf of anyone interested in the politics which impacts their life, but it will merely irritate the gullible

50 Lush Color Photos Are Worth More Than 50,000 Words

Although this book has many elements, its core is the Harley-Davidson as a design. The photographs are mostly of 50 different models, focused on the motorcycle alone, done with remarkable lighting to create exquisite detail and color. You will feel like you are visiting a museum of mint Harleys as you "stroll" from page to page while sitting comfortably in your favorite chair. The book is strengthened by some classic Harley photos that you have seen before, such as from Easy Rider. There is also a good overview of the development of the company, key technologies, and a timeline of when different bikes were introduced. For those who don't know about Harleys, you also have a glossary to help you interpret, and a list of contacts to help you get even more information.
"People remember their first Harley-Davidson." As Hugo Wilson points out, that's because "Harleys look different, sound different and certainly ride different to other motorcycles." One of the strengths of the book is that it provides many helpful details about the bases of those differences. I could literally "hear" a Harley every time I looked at one of the images. And now I know why they sound that way. You will, too, when you read this exciting book.
"Their extraordinary appeal makes small boys dream and grown men save." Harley-Davidsons clearly draw on our sense of adventure, our desire for freedom, and our need to be different. Mothers, if you don't want your children to grow up to be bikers, keep this book and all Harleys away! The lure of the open road will be irresistible after enjoying this volume.
I am not an expert on motorcycles but have spent many happy hours on them. I could feel the thundering power in my legs as I looked at the Harley in Terminator II, the 74FLHB Electra Glide in blue from 1965, the FLHS Electra Glide from 1988, the FLSTF Fat Boy from 1999, and especially the Buell X1 Lightning from 1999.
To me the best page was 184 where there is a cutaway of the famous V-twin engine, along with a good description of each element. This is the heart of what makes a Harley a Harley, and I was glad to learn more about this wonderful design.
After you have finished enjoying this book and taken a ride on your Harley to celebrate (don't have one yet? . . . well, start dreaming and saving . . .), I suggest that you think about other ways you can enjoy your spirit of adventure and desire for the open road. Riding a Harley doesn't get you all the exercise you could use. Are there any hiking trails that you could ride your Harley to? In that way, you could have a double adventure. Plus, you can have even more enjoyment with your family and friends while you hike. If you haven't hiked the Grand Canyon yet down to the Colorado River, that would make a great ride/hike combination. Just do it! -- (but do plan ahead, you'll enjoy it more if you do).

A quality look at the history of Harley

Once you hear that iconic rumbling, you know there is a Harley-Davidson around. Harley-Davidsons are everywhere, and there is a solid following of motorcycle enthusiasts all across the world. The Ultimate Harley-Davidson book breaks down each model decade by decade. It is a wonderful format for Harley-Davidson lovers who enjoy reading the history that goes along with these wonderful machines. The entire book is bright and bold with complete and accurate information and outstanding photographs from past to present.

From the early days of the company to the days of Easy Ride, the reader gets a deep look into Harley-Davidson culture, specs, and mechanics. "The arrival of high-spec Japanese imports had another consequence. People wondered why, if Japanese 125cc machine could have an electric starter, and American 1200cc machine could not. Harley's response was to fit an electric starter to its FL models from 1965 to create the Electra Glide, possibly the most famous motorcycle model ever built. It even had a film named after it, Electra Glide in Blue (1973)."

Hugo Wilson, author and motorcycle enthusiast, has written many best-selling books on motorcycles and is the editor of the United Kingdom's top selling motorcycle magazine "Bikes". I think of him as a British Allan Girdler. Girdler is an American author and motorcycle enthusiast who has educated me well on the history of the Harley-Davidson Xr-750 and Harley Davidson Sportster.

DO NOT! I REPEAT DO NOT RENT FROM AMAZON. I rented this book and right before finals the book expired so I had to re rent the book. When I call Amazon they said it was my fault that I did not know when it would expire. I also tried to contact Cengage Learning and they would not answer the phone so I do not think they will be of much help. Renting text books from amazon is a scam. If you dont want to be cheated out of your money go buy or rent from Chegg, but I repeat do not use Amazon. Horrible company and cheats.
