A three-year-old toddler is "a grammatical genius"--master of most constructions, obeying adult rules of language. To Pinker, a Massachusetts Institute of Technology psycholinguist, the explanation for this miracle is that language is an instinct, an evolutionary adaptation that is partly "hard-wired" into the brain and partly learned. In this exciting synthesis--an entertaining, totally accessible study that will regale language lovers and challenge professionals in many disciplines--Pinker builds a bridge between "innatists" like MIT linguist Noam Chomsky, who hold that infants are biologically programmed for language, and "social interactionists" who contend that they acquire it largely from the environment. If Pinker is right, the origins of language go much further back than 30,000 years ago (the date most commonly given in textbooks)--perhaps to Homo habilis , who lived 2.5 million years ago, or even eons earlier. Peppered with mind-stretching language exercises, the narrative first unravels how babies learn to talk and how people make sense of speech. Professor and co-director of MIT's Center for Cognitive Science, Pinker demolishes linguistic determinism, which holds that differences among languages cause marked differences in the thoughts of their speakers. Following fast on the heels of Joel Davis's Mother Tongue ( LJ 12/93) is another provocative and skillfully written book by an MIT professor who specializes in the language development of children. While Pinker covers some of the same ground as did Davis, he argues that an "innate grammatical machinery of the brain" exists, which allows children to "reinvent" language on their own. Basing his ideas on Noam Chomsky's Universal Grammar theory, Pinker describes language as a "discrete combinatorial system" that might easily have evolved via natural selection. Pinker steps on a few toes (language mavens beware!), but his work, while controversial, is well argued, challenging, often humorous, and always fascinating. Most public and academic libraries will want to add this title to their collections.

Here, under a rather heavy Chomsky influence, Pinker discusses, among other things, how language evolved, how children acquire and develop language skills, and why the English language and its spelling aren't as nonlogical as such critics as George Bernard Shaw have claimed. Written for popular consumption, Pinker's discussions of such complicated arguments and theories as the various, disputable universal grammars and languages of thought, Quine's gavagai, and the world of morphemes and phonemes are all painless to read. Examples are clear and easy to understand; Pinker's humor and insight make this the perfect introduction to the world of cognitive science and language. The 2007 Revision

Well, not exactly a revision. There is a new “P.S.” section at the end: a little autobiography, how the book was written, some Frequently Asked Questions, Suggested Reading, lots of new references, and “some reflections on the contents of each chapter in the light of developments since 1994.”

The latter is pretty slight. If the typeface were the same size as the text, it would probably cover 15 pages. I can think of three reasons for the shortness:

1. Pinker thinks he was right about most everything in 1994 and doesn’t feel the need to change much.

2. He has updated and elaborated numerous things in two later language books, Words and Rules: The Ingredients Of Language and The Stuff of Thought: Language as a Window into Human Nature, to which he liberally refers. He notes that the last chapter “Mind Design” begat How the Mind Works and The Blank Slate: The Modern Denial of Human Nature. It is obvious that his most recent, The Sense of Style: The Thinking Person's Guide to Writing in the 21st Century, had beginnings in chapter 12, “The Language Mavens.”

3. He is a very busy man and did not want to take the time necessary for a thorough update.

I suspect all three are partially true. I was disappointed by how often I asked, "Has no recent research been done on ______ or is Pinker just not writing about it?" Which I suppose is a compliment about how interesting Pinker makes language research. Still, the P.S. definitely adds value. It is worth getting this edition.

book's good, but STAY AWAY FROM KINDLE EDITION!

This is not a review of the book itself, just a warning for anyone thinking of getting the Kindle edition.

The people who published this for Kindle should be ashamed of themselves for selling this product with a straight face.

As Kindle books are often scanned from printed versions, I'v grown accustomed to seeing the occasional mis-scanned word, as they are usually sparse and don't distract from the content.

This book, however, contains hundreds of mis-scans. I'm talking about a few every page (some pages might contain up to 10 errors). And these are errors that routinely distract from the content of the book, as the errors will sometime spell a different word altogether, giving a sentence a completely different meaning that you will only realize is nonsensical after reading an entire paragraph.

Plus, 2 times out of ten, the combination of letters "th" will be scanned as "di". As you must realize, die difficulty of reading dirough paragraphs full of diese errors, in die kindle version of diis book, dioroughly distracts from the enjoyment of die material.

A good read for the right audience.

I enjoyed enough of this book to recommend it with reservations. It can get dry at times (especially if you aren't an expert on linguistics). It can also grab your attention if you're interested in language and word and grammar origins. It is also occasionally quite funny. It deals primarily with language origins. It is NOT a grammar or spelling guide.

GEORGE HERBERT FUNDAMENTAL EXERCISE A PRACTICAL GUIDE

GENIUS! George Hebert was a hundred years ahead of his time. He blended all types of exercise to make military personnel functionally fit back in early 1900's. We do a lot of the same stuff in 2014. Hebert was a fitness pioneer and innovator. I used the book as a workout guide. It is a little rigid on posture but there is a purpose. If you have a hard time seeing men just wearing a support, be prepared. Body alignment and posture are key to correct movement and execution so back then in the all male military in France, men did not wear much. They were extremely lean and fit and make modern soldiers look chubby.
So if you want to see where modern military fitness came from, check out the book.

AMAZING!

I read this book in about a day! It was amazing and you got hooked on the story. It took a little while to get into it. You needed to know the background. Maybe it was just me, because I did not realize that this was the secong book in the series. It is supposed to follow LOCAL GIRLS. After when I was done I realized that it was the second book. I started to read the description of LOCAL GIRLS and it does not seem like this book follows the same characters and work into to RICH BOYS. I have not read LOCAL GIRLS yet but RICH BOYS appealled more it me than LCOAL GIRLS. I just loved the title and had to buy it. It is a lot of girls dream to have this relationship in the book, with the boy and what he is willing to do!

This was a fun read! I enjoyed not really knowing how it would end, with all the drama going on and twists I tried time and time again to guess and STILL ended up wrong. I loved reading this book and seeing the relationships progress, it was very cool and the plot was fairly unique - to me. Definitely something fun to read during the summer!

So many possibilities! I have written 3 different sequences thanks to this deck. Very useful. I gave 4 star because the info on the back gives the Sanskrit names of the poses rather than the English. Help yoga sequencing deck.

Excellent set of asanas that describe what parts of the body are targeted. Also has descriptions for counter poses and good preparatory poses. The deck groups asanas according to standing, core, hips/legs, and inversion postures. It has both English and Sanskrit names. I bought these to help inspire sequencing since I'm a certified yoga teacher and it has been pretty helpful. There are even poses in this deck that I didn't learn in my training so that's awesome! I think it's very useful for someone very familiar with anatomy vocabulary otherwise one would need to look up some of the muscle groups on the cards. Definitely good for the yoga teacher looking for new inspiration but has a solid background with yoga and anatomical terms.

Best PHP Book in the market now.

This is one of the best PHP book now in the market, I can tell if the author is a really technical person as what demonstrated in the video alone, I spent time learning in the video rather than reading it, if you have patient to practice by coding it, that video is better than taking some "in class" lesson, because the application discussed in the video has a complete package. Great book, especially if you're new to PHP and MySql.

Good Book - But not the one stop shop.

I bought this book because of the promise of quality learning through guided tutorials and it's for appreciation of the effort in constructing this book in such a way that i've given it 3 stars. While the book starts off easily enough for a beginner to follow i found that the tutorials were lacking in some detail. When we're adding dynamics to our test website and the '(isset($_GET['xxx']))' request comes up, with no explanations of what isset is, nor what $_GET is - just what it does, which is a fundamental difference when you are trying to learn 'why'.
I still follow the tutorials of this book, however I would recommend that you purchase another tutorial based book on PHP to help you along such as Head First PHP & MySQL, which goes into detail about the 'why', not just the function of the element.

A PARABLE ON PROPERTY

One of the master communist playwright Bertolt Brecht's strengths as an artist was the ability to set up a moral dilemma and work it out to a conclusion, not always a satisfactory one, by play's end. This is unusual in a seemingly orthodox follower of the old Stalinist' socialist realist' cultural program. This work nevertheless permitted Brecht to address an age-old question about the nature of property ownership, extending it from its natural and historic setting in land and chattels to the question of personal human ownership.

The question posed here is whether a child abandoned by its natural mother then found and raised by another women should go to the former or that latter. Nice dilemma, right? But Brecht, as seem in Mother Courage and other parables, is not above cutting right to the bone on moral questions. What makes this work a cut above some of Brecht's more didactic plays is the way that he weaves the parable about the odd resolution of an ancient Chinese property dispute and places that `wisdom' in context of a then current dispute between two Soviet-era communes.

In the ancient dispute the judge who is called upon to render judgment, using the circle as a medium to resolve the dispute, seems to be Solomonic but is really a buffoon. This is pure Brechtian irony. This says as much about Brecht attitude toward property as it does about the old time Chinese justice system. The question of property rights as presented by Brecht and their value as a societal glue is also something the reader or viewer of this play should think about as well.

"Almost" an age of justice

Brecht's "The Caucasian Chalk Circle," written in self-imposed exile towards the end of World War II, is a story within a play, in which a bard, or singer, interrupts a group of Caucasian farmers arguing over ownership of land that has been ravaged by Nazi tanks and entertains them with a relevant tale of yore. In a city called Grusinia, the Governor is executed in a coup and his wife flees for her life, abandoning their baby son Michael, who is picked up by a humble kitchen maid named Grusha. Having recently betrothed herself to a soldier named Simon who is away on duty, she sets out on a cross-country journey with the infant to get help from her brother, a farmer in a distant village.

Lavrenti, her brother, suggests she get married immediately to avoid suspicion that the baby is hers out of wedlock, and the most available candidate is a local wretched peasant. After living with this man for a couple of years, Grusha is apprehended by soldiers who have come to take young Michael, the sole heir of the deposed Governor's estate, back to Grusinia. The case of Michael's custody, contested by the Governor's wife against Grusha, is brought to trial, where the judge, a drunk named Azdak whose unofficial appointment to this position is a farce, decrees that the boy will be placed inside a circle drawn with chalk on the courtroom floor, and that the woman who is able to pull him out of the circle is the real mother. Although the story is of medieval Chinese origin, Brecht's play is a sort of refashioning of the Biblical anecdote about Solomon and expands the idea by supplying a whole backstory to the women's argument. Solomon's judgment is accepted because his wisdom is universally considered to be impeccable, but what of a man like Azdak who functions on whim more than on wisdom? The ending is subtly brilliant in the sense that the outcome of the contest is subject to semantic debate (whether you think the judgment is fair or logical or contradictory depends on how closely you read the judge's words), but also in the question of irony or sincerity in the suggestion that true justice will be conferred by nature rather than by man.
