After a sequence of spy thrillers, Follett burst onto the historical fiction scene in 1989 with the megahit The Pillars of the Earth, set in twelfth-century England, and nearly two decades later (having written many other novels in the meantime), he followed with a sequel, World without End. His new book inaugurates what is to be a trio of historical novels (called the Century Trilogy), and it duplicates in structure the two novels mentioned above: showcasing the lives of five families from all walks of life and involved in various ways with the issues of the day from the outbreak of WWI to the early 1920s and reflecting these issues over a broad geographical range, the families here being from Britain, the U.S., Russia, and Germany. The social range of this big, sweeping, completely enveloping novel is announced in the very first line: “On the day King George V was crowned at Westminster Abbey in London, Billy Williams went down the pit in Aberowen, Wales.” Actual historical figures populate the narrative along with fictional characters, all of whom experience in different ways war, revolution, and the fight for women’s rights. --Brad Hooper

Expert Storyteller/Enthralling Tale!

I thoroughly enjoyed Ken Follett's epics, "Pillars of the Earth" and "World Without End". Though they are hefty tomes, the pages flew. Thus I jumped at the chance to read and review Follett's latest epic, "Fall of Giants" which promises to be the first in The Century Trilogy. When it arrived from Amazon at ~1000 pages and 4 inches thick, I found myself contemplating one of the advantages of having a slim Kindel (I don't). When the thing comes out in hardback in September it could be used a murder weapon!

But we all know that size doesn't matter when you've got an expert storyteller weaving an enthralling tale. I became so engrossed that I'd look up and 100 pages would have flown by. What is it that makes Follett so consistently "readable"? In "Fall of Giants" it's because the book is so well researched about the period (early 20th century especially WWI) with information on coal mining, trade unions, women's suffrage, protocols and manners of the minor royalty, politics, government, revolution and war. The story flows from this rich period but the riveting characters are at the forefront. Even the largely unsympathetic characters, such as the Earl, are made at least understandable because Follett thoughtfully portrays their motivations. There are few totally good or evil characters here, as it should be. (Though Follett seems none too fond of Russians and priests - be they Catholic, Anglican or Orthodox!)

In past reviews I have criticized authors that I believe would benefit from more editing (e.g., Steven King, John Irving) so why don't I find Follett's book to be too long? Because there are no slow spots, no political point pushing, and no self-indulgent purple prose.

I learned a great deal about WWI reading this novel, what led up to it and how it set the stage for WWII, which I hope is the subject of the next volume. It was fascinating to read about how the media and the governments of all the countries involved, lied to their people about how bad it was.

One other thing that I believe readers should know going in: as mentioned, this is Part One of a promised trilogy but, like "Pillars" and "World" it is a stand-alone novel. The reader is not left gripping a cliff at the end. I recently very much enjoyed Connie Willis' "Blackout" which DOES end with a cliff hanger and I am glad I knew that going in; some readers didn't and felt cheated. You will not feel at all cheated at the end of "Fall of Giants". Enjoy!

Too much history, too little fiction

I was hooked right from the start. Five different families, flung across different parts of the world, all their lives caught up in the politics of their times and countries, and obviously about to come together in some way. My blood boiled when I read about the miners' strike in Wales. I was outraged at the way women were treated in practically every part of the world. I was disgusted at the hypocritical and self-serving reasons countries up and go to war with each other. And equally, I was drawn into the lives of the people who populated this book, their relationships and troubles with each other.
And then the book seemed to fall off a precipice. I'm not the sort to skip pages, but here I found myself just flipping past entire bunches - and there are many: about 1000. I read an ebook so I can't be sure, but it says over 1000 for a paperback version. It was almost as if Ken Follet didn't want to write a fictionalization of the events leading up to and after World War I, the Russian Revolution and the changes that swept Germany. This book is obviously well researched and I would in fact be no judge of how accurate it is to real life. But somewhere it forgets to be fiction and doesn't have enough of the stuff of stories to hold your attention if your expectation is to read a great story. I skipped a lot, keeping track of the characters that mattered to me, but glossing over endless debates and recreations of political maneuverings and talks.

This is my first book of 2017, and what an absorbing, wonderful way to review the events of the beginning of the 20th century. The events and divisions between nations and social classes, leading up to and including World War I. Many lessons to be learned, pertinent to our current political climate and situation.

The Remnants of War thus reinvigorates our sense of the moral responsibility bound up in peacekeeping. In Mueller's view, capable domestic policing and military forces can also be effective in reestablishing civic order, and the building of competent governments is key to eliminating most of what remains of warfare.

For him, war is an idea, like dueling or slavery, that over time became embedded in human behavior, and whose appeal and legitimacy are now in profound decline. Better quality of life, the expansion of democracy, the development of international norms and institutions, and increasingly destructive war-making technologies are major factors. Yet if war is declining, warfare persists in the form of domestic conflicts that Mueller regards as a consequence of inadequate governments. Mueller’s solution proposes to improve states’ policing efficiency and effectiveness, making them better able to deal with what he calls "residual warfare" within their borders. The argument depends heavily on Mueller’s thesis that the various forms of conflict prominent after the Cold War—terrorism, ethnic conflicts, "criminal war" like that still racking the former Yugoslavia—are not wars but policing problems, requiring a constabulary approach. Mueller’s case is essentially semantic, based on a limited definition of war as highly organized conflict between highly developed societies; many of the conflicts he describes as "thuggish remnants" feature sophisticated weapons and make comprehensive use of modern electronics. And what happens if the newly effective states he postulates subsequently turn their attention outward? Mueller’s case finally depends more on inference than evidence.

A political book that gives you hope

Mueller's Retreat from Doomsday was one of the best books I read in college and this follow-up is just as good. Mueller takes the long view of war and shows that the devastating wars among nation states of the 19th and 20th centuries are disappearing.

What is left are wars against bandits, insurrections and terrorists, the modern equivalents of barbarians. Militarily they are no match for organized military forces.

I think he underestimates international organizations like Al Qaida who show the ability to organize simultaneous strikes and a willingness to sacrifice their lives. But I think his larger point that wars among nations have become rare is a good one worth study, discussion and, if true, celebration.

A Very Interesting Thesis

An interesting book that claims that war is an outdated concept and is obsolete. Although many (including myself) would take issue with this thesis, this is a through provoking work worth a look. My personal favorite item is the table comparing the death totals of the various Rambo movies. Hats off to you Dr. Mueller, you have provoked thought and discussion in a creative manner.

compelling presentation of a counter intuitive view on the origins and future of war

War avoided because so many people reject it, I.e.people's attitude about it? Most war initiated and maintained by criminals, thugs and sadist? If true that has major implications for policy. A fascinating read.

One caveat: either the editing was awful or the upload to digital was botched. There were typos galore.

This book transports you back in time.

"Middle Ages Unlocked" is an amazing book. It really transports you back in time to the period so much different from ours. I loved every single page. This book covers the early medieval period, from 1050 to 1300, which is great, because this period is not very often covered. Every aspect of life - religion, education clothing and many more - is described in impressive detail here. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who is interested in history.

The author was obviously knowledgeable about the subject but I guess the approach to topics was at too high an elevation for me. Also, some topics were covered in depth that didn't interest me to the level of detail provided.

Great introduction to filmmaking basics

I bought this book as part of a grad class I was taking. I was originally going to get this as a Kindle book, but I am glad I got the print version. I just don't think the numerous "sketch" drawings would have translated as well on my Kindle Paperwhite. There is a good variety of shot types in this book, and all of them are referenced to scenes in popular movies to help with the context, or to let you go and see a live demo. If anything, that is what the book is missing. The images do a good job of explaining the movement or type of shot, but a link to a video would have been better. This ultimately comes at the price of videos inevitably disappearing from YouTube and the like over time. Still, it would be worth considering. The book helped me think about shot choice and now has me deconstructing most of the TV I watch, whether I want to or not :)

Good Entry-Level Book into Filmmaking

[[VIDEOID:mo387IFO7291KVQ]]"Setting Up Your Shots" is a good entry-level book for filmmakers. It's all about what shot is best to tell the story and convey an idea to the audience.

Each page of the book has a different type of "shot" that is used in filmmaking. This includes common shots like Pan, Tilt, Zoom, Pull Focus, etc. But it also includes shots that are rarely used, yet could be useful for a certain dramatic or stylistic effect. Some moves require cranes or other equipment, but most can be done either handheld or with a tripod. All types of camera techniques are discussed, as well as some common editing techniques thrown in for good measure.

Each technique only gets one page, and the text does not get too in-depth. Fortunately, most pages include a sketch/illustration which gives you a visual example of the shot being described.

The two best ways to learn about filmmaking are to:
(1) watch great films, and
(2) just go out and start shooting!

This book embraces both of the ideas above. Included with each shot/camera technique is an example of 2-3 films that used that technique. The author does a good job selecting films/scenes that effectively used each type of shot - he recommends classics like The Third Man, Citizen Kane, Rear Window, etc... but he also cites many contemporary films such as The Matrix, Pirates of the Caribbean, and The Departed.

Finally, the author suggests "Exercises" that you can do to increase your knowledge of cinematography... these range from simple observation exercises to actually picking up a camera and practicing these shots. The best way to learn these shots is to try them out yourself.

I would say that if you want to work in Film/TV as a director or cinematographer, this book is a great entry into visual storytelling. This book is too simple for enthusiasts or professionals, but if you are a beginner then it will be an adequate resource for you without being too overwhelming.

definitely not worth it

i bought this book hoping to have an additional resource for inspiration when planning my shots, but out of the entire book there's probably only 1 or 2 pages that are even worth printing. the rest of the ideas are so obvious that i 'read' this book in about 20 min.

it's basically a big list of moves, one page at a time. no noteworthy discussions about each one other than maybe a paragraph or two. no talk of blocking, or the logistics of actually setting up your shots on the set.

just a list of ideas... tired ideas.

it's also a very irregular shape, so it sticks out of my library like a sore thumb.

'cinematic motion' by stephen katz is a much better place to start (as is his other book on directing--- 'shot by shot')

don't waste your time with this.

Wil's captures the "Best of the Best" techinques for the treatment of substance abuse problems

I have known Dr. Wil Horton professionally for about 15 years. His information is extremely important in the treatment of substance abuse because he has no specific treatment bias. Because of both personal and professional experience, he effectively "cherry picks" the best of the best techniques from a variety of clinical approaches and presents them in a simple and easy to follow format found in this book. I highly recommend this writing for both the clinician and the consumer alike. As a 25 year experienced Master Drug and Alcohol counselor, I have used Wil's techniques with most of my clients. I have been a professional substance abuse counselor for over 15 years. I have practice many of the principles given in this book with tremendous success with my clients for most of those years. The things I have newly learned from reading the book (in one day -I was so engrossed!) appears very exciting for me both professionally and personally!

GONE FOR GOOD.

the old saying it takes one to know one is true and , being a former alcoholic the author brings his expertise as a drunk and one of the most brilliant doctors of the mind alive today, his reputation is built on the fantastic results of the methods outlined in this very unique and incredibly effective method of dealing with alcohol addiction. if you have made up your mind that you no longer will be a slave to the master of over thirty-million people in this country ,GET THIS BOOK NOW read it ,follow the simple guidelines , and not only will you get your life back, your life will be better than ever before. i did not buy this book in the beginning i used my freinds copy because i was tired of spending money on promises. be this book ,if followed to the letter i beleive will help ANYBODY ,no matter how much of a lush you are. it helped me when nothing else worked. i have drank so much alcohol i should have been given some kind of award from the distillers association of america . thanks to doctor horton and my determination those days are GONE FOR GOOD.
