A Great Prayer Book!!!

I love a good prayer book. This one couldn't have been a better fit for me. I just moved across the country to take a new position as an associate at a new church, and when I saw Tyndale offering this book I thought it would be a great tool to kickstart my ministry. I was amazed at how well the book is written. With prayers that are practical and Biblical I couldn't put this book down. I used it over and over each day for a couple weeks. I was enthralled. I would strongly recommend this book to any pastor out there. If you're struggling with a difficult board or getting to know new people this book would be helpful. Go check it out today.

What a great little book to give to your pastor, aspiring pastor,elder or anyone that needs a little help in the area of prayer. This little book is full of inspirational prayers that anyone can use.

It also makes a great mediative book , as you can spend your devotional time praying over special people that you know.

Eloquent Pastoral Prayers

Few books appeal to me more than a book of well-written, well-prayed prayers. This is that.

In addition to the usual holidays (Christmas, Easter, Mother's Day, Independence Day, Thanksgiving, etc.), there are prayers for a church business meeting, prayer for a new pastor, weddings, funerals--even a Christian prayer for Ramadan.

Drawing upon years of experience composing prayers for public worship, Hawley eloquently helps the people of God bring joys and struggles, problems and praises, hopes and fears before God. Felix Martin was educated in Britain, Italy and the United States and holds degrees in classics, international relations, and economics, including a doctorate in economics from Oxford University. He worked for the World Bank and for the European Stability Initiative think tank and is currently a partner in the fixed-income division at Liontrust Asset Management PLC. He lives in London.

Thought-provoking

This is an admirable attempt at trying to make money and monetary policy interesting by writing it in the style of an investigative historian trying to solve a puzzle. I found it easy to read, and quite engaging. Sometimes I thought the author made some conceptual leaps without good explanation (possibly due to the style of the book) but this book is certainly thought-provoking.

His view, that money is a social technology, an accounting concept and transferable debt, is not entirely new. Many non-mainstream economists (such as the MMT theorists) have made similar arguments based on different historical evidence, perhaps not in such readable style. I think the evidence in this book, and elsewhere, is quite convincing - money is much much more than simply a way to pay for things, and conventional views certainly miss a lot of the significance of money. If you have never come across these views, this book will make you look at the world differently.

The thesis that many of our problems emerge from a lack of understanding of money is one with which I agree. There is certainly a problem when a profession (economists like myself) can influence policies driven by an understanding of money that is not derived from the social reality or the actual practice of banking (I have met countless economists who hold naive textbook views about the financial system which they would change if they actually worked in a bank). Whether this new understanding will save capitalism as the author claims, probably goes a bit too far. One of the final policy conclusions (narrow banking, a system where banks only take deposits backed 100% by the national currency) is controversial, and not easy to reconcile with his thesis.

In short, this is an interesting book about money, its origins, significance and related policies. I enjoyed reading it, and I think even a non-economists would understand it and enjoy the style of writing. It may be puzzling in places, but it draws many surprising connections so almost every chapter will make you think. It may not always be possible to keep track of all the ideas, but fortunately there is a brief summary of the line or reasoning at the end. Caution: if you hold very strong views in favour of consensus ideas like central bank independence, inflation targeting or an affinity for the gold standard, then you will not like this book.

Original, or confused?

Felix Martin tempts fate by opening with a quote from A. H. Quiggan: "Everyone, except an economist, knows what 'money' means." Martin is a former World Bank economist, and at the end of this book, I sympathised with Quiggin.

After 260 pages of heavy-going argument, Martin concludes that money is: "not a thing but a social technology - a set of ideas and practices for organising society. To be precise (!) ... [money] is a concept of universally applicable economic value."

Earlier he states that: "Coins and currency ... are useful tokens to record the underlying system of credit accounts and to implement the underlying process of clearing."

Rather than providing a new and counter-intuitive insight into money, which he claims, there is analytical confusion.

A logical fallacy in much analysis of money is repeated here: because debts have often been used as money, it does not follow that money is a debt. Martin's novel version of this fallacy is to argue that because we use credit accounts and a clearing system to net off payments, this makes the credit and clearing system "money". This is a logical error. The standard definition of money - anything accepted as payment for goods and services - is clear, and distinguishes it from debt and the clearing system. This definition does not assume, as Martin implies, that money is a "commodity". The accepted means of payment, as his many examples illustrate, can be physical, or abstract (or virtual).

This is really a history book, which claims to have identified an unconventional and more relevant understanding of what money is. There is lots of history, but the central thesis is unconvincing. Martin goes as far as to suggest that a flawed definition of money, with intellectual roots in Locke and even Aristotle, explains the economics professions' failure to foresee the financial crisis. We know this to be false. Economic policymakers and academics ignored the financial system. The reason is not because they had incorrectly defined money, it is because they focus on the last problem. The obsession with inflation targeting was a prolonged response to the inflation shock of the 1970s and 80s. Unsurprisingly, economists - academics and policymakers - are now producing a vast literature on the financial system, banking and asset bubbles, without any re-definition of "money" (and it goes without saying that the next problem will lie elsewhere).

Consistent with this mainstream response, Martin places far too much faith in the idea that "narrow" banking will save the world. It is a variant of the old proposal that when you deposit money with a bank, it should hold an equivalent amount of cash in reserve. This view re-emerges in some form after every major banking crisis. Friedman was an advocate in the 1950s. The interesting question, which Martin evades, is why it is never adopted. Perhaps it is not such a good idea.

I had looked forward to reading this book. Martin's main argument is initially intriguing and there's plenty of history, but ultimately it is unconvincing and confused. For really good histories of money, I would first read Milton Friedman's Money Mischief or Paper Promises by Philip Coggan. The absence of reference to either of these is odd. Even more so is the superficial dismissal of Hayek, without reference to his views on money. Hayek's economics is flawed, but his insights into money, drawing on David Hume, are profound, and close to Martin's. Indeed, Martin's "novel" idea - that money is a social institution, not a physical object - originates with Hume, who is unacknowledged. These omissions, and errors of fact, do not reassure the reader. For an example of the latter, Domingo Cavallo, Argentina's former economy minster and a central figure in Chapter 4, is re-christened "Domenico". An error repeated in the Index.

Great history of money until ~1800s, but crazy policy digression after that

This is ultimately a book promoting a specific policy masquerading as an economic history masquerading (extremely superficially) as a biography.

As for policy: it's an odd mix of conventional Keynesian economics with throwing out useful ideas like central bank independence. The author has an exceptionally high degree of confidence in "democratic institutions" to work in their own long-term self interest; the real crisis in time is not the liquidity transformation of long-term assets and short term liabilities in banks, but short term voting cycles and public attention span, short to medium term sacrifice, and inherently delayed benefits in public policy.

As a history: he cherry picks examples, but ignores historical examples when they are completely counter to his argument -- Scottish free banking, the successful operations of gold banks in China and elsewhere (separate from the pre-war or Bretton Woods systems). In his accounting of the 2008 financial crisis and aftermath, he does correctly point out the socialization of risk, privatization of profits which have existed in finance since at least the 1990s, but doesn't dig into why that was allowed to persist for so long (aside from a superficial appeal to "it was overly complicated"). Failures at LTCM and other institutions provided clear warnings roughly a decade in advance of the problems looming. (Regulatory capture and self interest by employees and boards of banks, vs. shareholders and the public, would seem to be the true root cause.)

As for the writing -- maybe in an attempt to interest normal readers, the language is overly flowery, and thus difficult to read quickly (not as much in the beginning, but it seems like the editor checked out around 30% in). He repeats himself in many places, making the same argument the same way, rather than just emphasizing a previous conclusion, or making the argument in a different way.

I read the book because I was really interested in the ecu de marc. Fortunately, that section (the first third) of the book was well edited, lively, historical, and generally excellent -- a book focused purely on the economic history of medieval to industrialization Europe, and the financial innovations from that, would be much more to my liking.

Excellent reference book on tai-chi

Mantak Chia has always been comprehensive in presenting his materials in a clear and logical way. It is one the best reference book for practitioners of tai-chi.

Tai-chi has become the no. 1 Chinese martial art system that has re-invented itself into a complete mind-body exercise system with the largest number of practitioners. One won't go far off if one simply practices one style of tai-chi form, and imitates the graceful movement of his sifu (if not enough, one can always go to youtube and learn and imitate the graceful movements of other sifu's). Since the mind of the practitioner is focused on the gracefulness of the form, possible psychological side effect can be avoided (like chi-kung/deep-meditation/kundalini syndromes) That is the wonderful part, and the reason for its popularity.

Having said that, a practitioner certainly can improve faster through following good guidelines like many in this book, for example:

1. Structural alignment: Tai-chi is usually practiced as a flowing circular movement system, which is essential for unimpeded chi-movement for system strengthening. Structure alignment of each position might easily be neglected by a beginning practitioner. Matak Chia advised "holding the (each) position" for up to five minutes. This is actually an important classical approach, often neglected by many contemporary "eager-to-progress" practitioners (or sifu's too!). In some Wu-style, there is a middle-way approach, in that a junior practitioner has to practice a square form first, which essential is a direct/straight-line movement between each position with holding for a few seconds.

2. Power training: the wonder of the tai-chi conditioning system is that power training can be done after graceful form training of structural alignment. Mantak Chia has offered some good training technique such as spiral, knee-twisting and rooting. (Of course, a tai-chi practitioner can also pick up other power training technique from other styles: like the very simple and effective method of fighting-style zhan zhuang of the I-style founded by grandmaster Wang).

3. Training for martial art: most practitioners for tai-chi do not come to tai-chi for its martial art aspect. Mantak Chia has presented a good introduction of how tai-chi practitioners can use the eight tai-chi forces, but more for information than for actual training. These are actually pre-combat training methods only. Tai-chi practitioners fighting in the ring will punch, evade, and kick like any stand-up fighter (one can browse the web and watch Wu-style master Mr. Wu fought in the ring with a famous White-crane master in Macao back in the 50's). For various reasons, some contemporary tai-chi masters (Mantak Chia NOT included) like to mystify tai-chi fighting power using fa-jing demonstrations (like throwing people up through simple touching) or even knocking people down through no contact distant chi power!

One caveat for folks who are ONLY interested to learn tai-chi from Mantak Chia's book: one can do without his other "promotions" (like healing love or chi-weight-lifting) to gain maximum benefits from one's tai-chi practice.

Another Gem from Mantak Chia

Over the last 25 years of so, my students and I have derived a great deal from a careful study of Mantak Chia's written works, and have had the great good fortune to work with several of his senior students.

Not only do most of his methods work very well, but much of his material has not been published elsewhere, except in some works in Chinese. I learned a few of the same exercises while studying in China and I was told that they came from oral traditions. That tends to give more credence to Mantak Chia's teachings. For example, one of the things that he emphasizes is the use of spiral "energy," that is not much mentioned in many books on Tai Chi and Qigong.

Tai chi was developed as both a martial art and a way to cultivate the physical body, subtle systems and spirit. People are often incredulous when they see the slow movements and hear that it is the basis of a martial art. But I have seen experts do some quite extraordinary things with Tai Chi: the key is the development and retention of internal "energy." I put quotes around the word energy, because it isn't really an accurate translation of the word "qi." Which is better translated as "influence." I have commented elsewhere that it's a bit of a misnomer to talk about "energy." This is not a semantic point, but rather something that can be very helpful in practice, particularly when using tai Chi for health and healing.

I prefer to use the term subtle "systems," to be a little more precise than saying "energies," for these subtle systems are composed of the inseparable twins:
1. Subtle energies and
2. The subtle fields that carry them.
Without energy the fields could not actualize, and without the fields, there would be nothing to carry the energy.

This book is full of excellent examples of how to stimulate and strengthen these subtle systems. Some other meditative practices, like kundalini, are not good at retaining the forces that you generate with these practices. Mantak Chia once said that kundalini yoga was a great way to heat a room!

There is a limit to how far you can go in Tai Chi and Qigong without a teacher, but this book will take you much further than most, and if you are already engaged in either type of practice, the book will give you a lot of helpful pointers.

Very Helpful instruction

I've only been practicing for a couple of years so my comments come from the perspective of a relative beginner. I find this book to be an excellent supplement to my teacher's instruction. The detailed descriptions of the 13 movement form are extremely helpful, particularly the explanations detailing the focus of spiraling energy in each movement, instead of focusing on what a given posture looks like when it's complete, he describes the process of achieving the posture. (not sure I've adequately described it).

I enjoy the practical approach to his writing style, easy to read but alot of information to absorb. Very accessible to a student at my level.

What a great story, an Animal trainer, a Lab puppy and a billionaire, what a combination!

What do you get when you mix a puppy, a billionaire, and an animal trainer together? A sexy, quirky love story. When Jessica Kingston is hired to train Jacob Daniel's new puppy, little does she know that the contract she signed entailed more than dog sitting. Unsophisticated and innocent, she is introduced to the BDSM lifestyle, and the sexual proclivities of the hunky Mr. Daniel's. I found this to be a fun, light read. The chemistry between the characters was steamy and believable.

This is a great novella from Michelle Fox. Animal Trainer Jessica is brought in for an interview assuming she is being interviewed for some big position when CEO Jacob Daniels hired her to care for and train his willful puppy that was given to him.
Jessica is stunned that she was hired to just train a puppy when she is an animal trainer but she loves animals and she sees the poor puppy is so lonely so she takes pity and immediately takes control. Jacob doesn’t know what to make of Jessica. He is intrigued by Jessica; she is very different from the women he normally associates with. Jacob wants to keep her for himself and is afraid that he may run her off.
Story is short but did not feel that way. It was packed full of emotion, story full of characters . Love that cast of furry characters and the interaction between the H/h. The intense emotion between them, the heat was so live, that it leapt off the pages. I really recommend this story. The author knows how to communicate the story to her readers and you will not go wrong reading this story.

or even better, her new spin-off

For only the second time in three years I sit down to write a review. Ironically, the first was also a book from Ms. Ward, The King. That review was more a reaction to the reviews I saw being posted. This, well, this is a tribute. In less than 100 pages, J.R. Ward paints with a full and luxurious brush. Her characters are fully drawn, flush with color and emotional depth. Truly, it's a gift. I don't know how old this story actually is, I did not purchase or read whatever anthology it originally appeared in. But as i 'turned' the last page on my Kindle my mind immediately started scheming on how to get more. Just more. The ways J.R. Ward could incorporate these characters into her Black Dagger Brotherhood series, or even better, her new spin-off. How fan-girl of me, I know. But after just 100 pages I was not ready to say good-bye.

The story itself reads like a secret fantasy of the hardest of us. That guilty pleasure-ish thing that we tell no one about, not even our 'bestie'. Strong, capable independent woman, tricked and taken as 'food' for the gorgeous (and virginal) vampire chained in the basement. Intrigue, lust and love ensue. In that order. Hah! Does it get any better than this for a secret fantasy? I think not. (Except maybe if there was a pirate...?) Hahaha, well done, Ms. Ward, as usual. Hat's off. Glad you decided to release this as a stand alone so that it may find a larger audience. And please don't discount entirely the thought of bringing Claire and Michael into the Caldwell fold. My head is spinning with possibilities, lol. Please take it from here...

Sweet Sexy Vampire Story

THE STORY: Claire Stroughton is a high powered New York lawyer who ends up being kidnapped in order to provide food for a imprisoned vampire. The vampire she meets has been held prisoner for years and doesn't even have a name. He is incredibly sweet and Claire finds herself wanting to help him escape.

OPINION: I really liked this story. It was focused and the vampire hero was incredibly sweet and sexy. He certainly shakes Claire's world to its foundations. The story is sexy and uncomplicated (in contrast with the Black Dagger Brotherhood books) and is focused only on the couple in the story. Anyone looking for sexy vampire should be pleased with this story.

WORTH MENTIONING: This story first appeared in the anthology "Dead After Dark".

FINAL DECISION: I really liked this story. The intense and sexy focus on the characters romance makes this uncomplicated and compelling.

CONNECTED BOOKS: THE STORY OF SON takes place in the same place as the Black Dagger Brotherhood books, Caldwell NY, but doesn't involve those books at all. Also, the rules of vampires seem similar but not identical to those detailed in the Black Dagger Brotherhood books.

STAR RATING: I give this story 4.25 stars.

I hate to even write this......

I can't believe I am going to "not like" a J.R. Ward vampire novel. Ugh. This hurts to even type. I am a HUGE Black Dagger Brotherhood fan! I can't tell you how many times I have read those 13 novels (seriously, I can't count...it's too many). Maybe that's why I found this book a little boring, rushed, and not honest to the "rules" of vampires in the other novels. Come on, J.R. Ward has to know her own rules she set forth for these guys. WHY DIDN'T SHE FOLLOW THEM?!

Vague Spoiler!
It states that this particular vampire doesn't know any other vampires. They need to feed off of each other to be "big and strong" otherwise they are puny. How is this particular vampire not only strong, but survived the transition without a female? That's just one of many examples of how this book was disappointing.

I know. I know. I'm picking apart the pieces, but I just wanted a short story of another amazing vampire. Didn't happen for me. So bummed!

Excellent introduction

The book is a modern introduction to the whole field of 'intelligent systems' (IS) which is broadly what we used to call AI before the term fell out of favour. It is very much an introduction "suitable for a first course in IS...anywhere from the junior level undergraduate to first year graduate level". It is 700+ pages of excellence. It covers a wide range of subjects, is grounded in practical use of freely available tools (Protege, CLIPS, Soar, etc.,) and is written by someone who clearly understands what it is like to be unfamiliar with the subject and the kind of questions that beginners ask. It doesn't drown you with algebra, but uses enough to illustrate the points being made. It concentrates almost more on worked examples of CSPs, rule sets, blackboards, decision trees, fuzzy logic and all kinds of other stuff than it does on maths. I strongly recommend this book for anyone who is looking for a comprehensive and highly readable introductory overview of IS.

Impressions on 3rd read through

Basics: Excellent, no complaints
-Softcover, but good quality pages and prints. Standards are high.
- Largish size (big as any previous), 300 pages packed with prints.

Artwork Balance: overall very good, with worries
- Artists are given 2 page spreads, often in theme, as well as being mixed together. I like this!
- Gold &Silver winners get a full page with photo and commentary. This is nice, but borderline. More would be intrusive.
- Humor is sparse, but there are enough lighter moments. (Little old witch & kitten is delightful)
- Dimensional art is good this year, and the other various categories are generally well represented.

- Magical Realism. Do I detect a whiff of snobery against genre? (I am admittedly hypersensitive in this regard) This issue's judges skewed toward toward magical realism/mythology/symbolic. I like a good mix, but I buy my genre art book for the genre art. I would prefer a bit more high fantasy and the like.

I am happy with my Spectrum 22 purchase.

Wide Spectrum of Artistic Talent

As an artist, you don't want to miss this series of the best artwork of this generation. I know that the art world is very subjective in itself but this magazine needs to be a great visual art inspiration and motivation. I'm reviewing this particular volume but applies to all the volumes produced by Spectrum. Each volume has its own beauty, originality, and just stunning artwork. People that could be a little naive about the sophistication and complexity of the artwork featured should try it and see if you can even get close. I admire the artistry, creativity, and overall presentation of these amazing artists. A great care to showcase the best of the best and how I wish each day that I would be granted with such talent. However, I don't mind being the one appreciating and praising the great work of these current artists. I'm impressed with this magazine that I can't help but express my appreciation and admiration with the magazines' collection or such artwork.

Another fantastic collection

The Spectrum series continues to deliver the very finest in fantasy art, in the widest possible range of styles, media, and venues. Categories include advertising, book art, comics, and more - including my favorites, the 'dimensional,' sculptural works. The styles range from classic realism (or surrealism), to inked line-drawings, to works that evoke medieval tapestries, to ... well, you name it, there are sure to be works here that have elements of it. Loose or literal, colored, B&W, or barely tinted,

The collection, the printing, and the sheer variety earn this highest marks - even if digital media increasingly dominate hard media of the traditional kinds. So, why not that fifth star? Earlier volumes in this series lightened the mood with a rich mix of more whimsical, humorous works. Humor seems in short supply this time. Light works can be just as serious as darker ones, but the general feel of this assembly has a grim edge to it.Still, it's a worthy successor, whether you look for inspiration in your own work or just want to wallow in imagation made real.
