Part 2 of a Two Volume Set. This is not a textbook, and has study summaries in it, but it's not really a study guide either. This well-organized book addresses the material of Organic Chemistry in such a way that students with different learning styles can master the concepts. Volume 1 assumes no knowledge of organic chemistry, and explains concepts at a very basic level. At the same time, the two volumes explain all the complex concepts and mechanisms needed to pass a typical two semester college-level Organic Chemistry Course in words that any student can understand. Volume 2 includes coverage of organic redox reactions, aliphatic syntheses, conjugated unsaturated systems, aromatic systems, pericylic reactions, nucleophilic addition and substitution at the acyl carbon, enolates, C-13 NMR, an extensive review of nomenclature and brief coverage of mass spectroscopy and UV/Vis spectroscopy. Coverage of aliphatic synthesis includes a summary of all the reactions shown in the two volumes and gives several examples of how to put these together in multi-step syntheses. Coverage of aromatic reactions includes in-depth analysis of the electrophilic aromatic substitution mechanism, the effect of different substituents on the EAS mechanism, the two different types of nucleophilic aromatic reactions and summaries and examples for aromatic syntheses. Coverage of the nucleophilic addition and substitution at the acyl carbon, like coverage of all the other reactions in the volumes is extremely clear and well-organized, showing the different variations of these reactions in a specific, easy-to-understand progression. The same thing can be said for coverage of enolate ions and enols and their reactions. All mechanisms are color coded so that you can keep track of the atoms in the reaction. Coverage of nomenclature includes of a review of introductory nomenclature, nomenclature of dienes, aromatic compounds, carbonyl compounds, and carboxyl compounds and their derivatives. Coverage of nomenclature ends with an explanation of how to determine the priority of different functional groups in order to name multifunctional compounds. The end of most chapters contains a compilation of the summary of all the reactions in the chapter. This volume includes extensive coverage of C-13 NMR spectroscopy with an emphasis on both theory of NMR and on how to interpret the C-13 NMR Spectra of Organic Compounds. C-13 NMR spectra for all common classes of organic compounds are shown. The book does include some repetition of material, since the author believes that repetition is necessary to learn concepts. The summaries at the end of each chapter are a repetition of what was taught earlier in the chapter that can be used as a study guide. The reason that this book is split into two volumes is the fact that it exceeds the maximum page length for a book distributed by Amazon.com. The author tried to split the book in such a way that the topics usually covered in the first semester organic chemistry course are in the first volume while the topics usually covered in the second semester organic chemistry course are in the second volume. Perfect for studying for the MCAT, PCAT and other pre-professional exams. Note that the page numbering for Volume 2 ends where Volume 1 left off. The index includes pages numbers from both volumes.

If you want an **A** in o-chem look no further!!

I used Step by Step Organic Chemistry Volume 2 in my college level Organic Chemistry II class and it helped me tremendously. Like the first volume, the second also breaks reactions and theories into easy-to-follow steps and is a must have for any Organic Chemistry student. The second volume discusses more complex reactions not included in the first volume AND it also includes an excellent, and in my opinion, in-depth guide to mastering spectroscopy. I used both volume 1 and 2 as my primary form of textbook and made A's in both of my o-chem classes. However, this book would also be great as a supplemental textbook if the one your professor assigned isn't quite clear enough. It can even be used as a study guide! I personally used this book to study for the ACS exam while in college, and I even returned to it years later in order to study for the PCAT. This book (both volumes 1 and 2) are seriously the most helpful textbooks I ever bought during my entire undergraduate college career.

Helped tremendously with O Chem 2!

If you haven't already checked out Dr. Janet Maxwell's "Step by Step Organic Chemistry: Volume 1," it's more of the same great straightforward stuff, only it covers things more likely to be in your Organic Chemistry II class. Once again, it's easy to understand, clear, and has very well organized reaction mechanisms. If you've ever had a hard time reading an Organic Chemistry book, this is not one of those. I would highly suggest this to ANYONE who is struggling with Organic Chemistry.
I was struggling very badly with synthesis and retro-synthesis problems in my Organic Chemistry II class. This book helped me so much. The book required for my class? I stared at it for hours trying to make sense of it. Save yourself some time and effort decoding a disorganized textbook for a very hard subject and buy this one! You won't regret it!

Another must have!

This book is a must have for any chemistry student, or even anyone who is just interested in learning a little more about organic chemistry as a whole. Honestly, this book even taught me more about general inorganic chemistry than both high school and lower level collegiate chemistry classes combined. In addition, when many scientific books out on the market are difficult to read and comprehend, this book was extremely easy. The author uses many different learning methods to facilitate retention including images, charts, and classic text. I still have my copy and recommend it to everyone.
