Berlin Diary: The Journal of a Foreign Correspondent, 1934-1941, by William L. Shirer

By the acclaimed journalist and bestselling author of The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich, this day-by-day, eyewitness account of the momentous events leading up to World War II in Europe is the private, personal, utterly revealing journal of a great foreign correspondent.

CBS radio broadcaster William L. Shirer was virtually unknown in 1940 when he decided there might be a book in the diary he had kept in Europe during the 1930s--specifically those sections dealing with the collapse of the European democracies and the rise of Nazi Germany.

Shirer was the only Western correspondent in Vienna on March 11, 1938, when the German troops marched in and took over Austria, and he alone reported the surrender by France to Germany on June 22, 1940, even before the Germans reported it. The whole time, Shirer kept a record of events, many of which could not be publicly reported because of censorship by the Germans. In December 1940, Shirer learned that the Germans were building a case against him for espionage, an offense punishable by death. Fortunately, Shirer escaped and was able to take most of his diary with him.

Berlin Diary first appeared in 1941, and the timing was perfect. The energy, the passion, and the electricity in it were palpable. The book was an instant success, and it became the frame of reference against which thoughtful Americans judged the rush of events in Europe. It exactly matched journalist to event: the right reporter at the right place at the right time. It stood, and still stands, as so few books have ever done--a pure act of journalistic witness.

Review
''The most complete news report yet to come out of war-time Germany.'' --Time

From the Publisher
"There is absolutely no better book by an American about the rise of the Third Reich. A gripping—and harrowing—view from inside Hitler's Germany." —Lamar Graham

About the Author
WILLIAM L. SHIRER (1904-1993) had a distinguished career as foreign correspondent, news commentator, and historian of the contemporary world. He reported from Berlin for the Universal News Service and for CBS on the rise of the Nazis, and he covered their fall as a war correspondent. Out of these reports grew his bestsellers, Berlin Diary and The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich, which has sold more copies for the Book-of-the-Month Club than any other book in the club's history.

For Fans Only
By Quinbus
Nothing like the justly famous "Berlin Diary" published in 1941. This is something along the lines of a very early draft of his "Rise and Fall of the Third Reich." I found it interesting, but would recommend it only to fans. I enjoyed (if that's the word) his same-day notes on what he found in Berlin when he visited in the October of 1945. Folks living in basements, still digging out of the rubble. His impression was that the Berliners were indeed very sad -- not because of what Germany had done, but because Germany lost. In Nuremberg, he found that the man in the street, or anyway the local survivors of the bombing, shrugged off the war crimes trials as predictable propaganda.

Distant mirror To current politics

Insightful record of the rise of fascism as it occurred. The frog slowly boiled as Europe watched. A clear testament to the wisdom of stepping on evil before it grows too large.

A fascinating account of a troubling but fascinating time
By Susan
I read this book after finishing "In the Garden of Beasts" by Erik Larsen. I found Shirer's account of the years from 1934 through 1940 spellbinding, told as it is in the form of his actual journal entries as the events unfolded. In his position as a newscaster, Shirer was at the scene of many key events, and with his fluent command of German and French, as well as his excellent people skills, Shirer was able to record eye-witness impressions, his own and others, right at the time of the event rather than after the fact. Shirer attended many speeches by Hitler and other Nazi leaders and was in Vienna for the Anschluss, in Czechoslovakia when the decision was made in Munich to grant Germany the Sudetenland, in Poland during part of the invasion, in Denmark, the Netherlands, Belgium, and France immediately after the Nazi invasion. He was at the front watching combat several times, was at the armistace in France, and experienced the British bombing of Berlin. Shirer was at enormous personal risk many times and appeared to treat this as just part of the job. A dramatic story recounted in a matter-of-fact manner. Now I feel brave enough to tackle "The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich", all 1266 pages.
