About the Author
Timothy Beatley is Chair of the Department of Urban and Environmental Planning and Teresa Heinz Professor of Sustainable Communities at the School of Architecture at the University of Virginia, where he has taught for over twenty-five years. He is the author of many books, including Planning for Coastal Resilience, Biophilic Cities, and Green Urbanism (Island Press).

a door opening gift

In the late 90's and early 2000's, I was building green homes in Cleveland and conducting greenbuilding seminars for builders, contractors and homeowners. When I discovered E.O.Wilson's concept of biophilia I was so taken by its broad implications that I began each seminar series with a discussion of the notion. How I could have enriched my seminars if I had a copy of Tim Beatley's book! To know that you are part of a much larger movement that respects the natural world in so many imaginative ways and that the movement is worldwide is a true inspiration. Tim has offered us a gift that is special for those of us who have been trying to be faithful to the earth, but is an invitation to young people everywhere to expand the wonderful horizon he has revealed. Makes me wish I was 18 again instead of 80!!
