Stephen Crane (November 1, 1871 – June 5, 1900) was an American novelist, short story writer, poet and journalist who wrote prolifically in his short life, becoming one of the best writers in the genres of Realism and Naturalism. Like Ambrose Bierce, Crane wrote often about war, inspired in part by his time spent as a war correspondent. One of his admirers was none other than Ernest Hemingway, who was influenced heavily by Crane’s style.
Although he was never a soldier, and he was born after the Civil War, his most famous novel was The Red Badge of Courage, making him a known name across the world during the 1890s. One of the most popular novels written about the Civil War, The Red Badge of Courage is about a young private in the Union Army, Henry Fleming, who flees from the field of battle. Overcome with shame, he acts as a color bearer carrying the regiment’s flag, the most dangerous position in battle. The masterful work has realistic battle sequences, vivid imagery, psychology, and a tone of irony.

From the Back Cover
The harrowing title tale from this collection recounts the experiences of an African-American coachman who becomes horribly disfigured after rescuing his employer's son from a fire. A study of race and tolerance as well as the challenges posed by deformity, this major work by the author of The Red Badge of Courage originally appeared in 1898. The last of Stephen Crane's work to be published in his lifetime, the story was rediscovered in the mid-twentieth century and acclaimed by Ralph Ellison as "one of the parents of the modern American novel."
This volume also features two additional short stories by Crane: "The Blue Hotel," in which a nervous visitor is led astray by his own preconceptions about the Wild West, and "His New Mittens," the touching tale of a little boy who allows himself to be goaded into a snowball fight and attempts to outrun his mistake.

Crane's stories are as entertaining and full as his poetry.
By jfield1
Before I knew Stephen Crane as a writer, I knew his works of poetry. I was fascinated by the brevity and depth of the prose poetry he penned. From there I grew to admire hims as a writer. This is a very good collection of some of his lesser known works but were excellent just the same. And for anyone who has never read his poetry, please download some of the free books and be prepared for whole new experience in poetry. You will not be sorry you did.
