Interesting reading, moves along well.

Believable end-of-the-world-as-we-know-it story. Liked it when first read 30+ years ago, and the story holds up pretty well today, although some of the interpersonal relations seem naive now.. The basic premise of the catastrophe is flawed, as simple arithmetic will show*, but if you ignore that (or don't do the calculations), you can get caught up in the impending doom predicted by "The HAB Theory".
*Spoiler, don't read this if you don't want to know the flaw.
The Theory is that asymmetric accumulation of polar ice causes the earth to tip over about 90 degrees every few thousand years. The necessary volume of ice in this Theory is about the same as putting two very small pieces of Scotch tape on the bottom of a child's gyroscope (not on the wheel, but at one end of the axis) and expecting that mass of tape will be sufficient to make the gyroscope so unstable it'll tip over while spinning at full speed.

This is a great "apocalypse" book written before apocalypses were cool

This is a great "apocalypse" book written before apocalypses were cool. This particular book is not easy to read because it is so big (8"x12"?), but it is so hard to find, I was happy to find it at a decent price.
In summary, it is about an old man who figures out why those wholly mammoths were found frozen under tons of earth with undigested buttercups in their stomachs. No one will listen to his theory, so he goes to the utmost extreme to get the world's attention leaving his daughter to deal with the aftermath and huge job of explanation. Even though this is a fiction book, the HAB Theory makes so much sense it is scary!
Great read and well worth the trip.

Wonderful,Wonderful!!

I bought this book in paperback from a garage sale 10 years ago. I almost loved the cover off it then and when I got a Kindle for Christmas one year I immediately looked to see if Amazon had this wonderful book. Hurrah! They did! Without a doubt this is one of the best--if not THE best--scifi books I have ever read. The amazing thing is it offers a plausable explanation for the absolutely craziest thing that could happen to the earth. I can't say more or I will give away the plot. It is so rational in its explanations that I began to wonder if it might be true!! Now THAT is how good the book is. If there were 10 stars to give out, I would give The Hab Theory no less than 8. (Incidentally, I have read it 3 times.) Hurry to order it, Kindle or hardback. Doesn't matter which---just get it,read it, and you will enjoy it, too. (Maybe more than once, like me!)
